drank Coconut Oolong by DAVIDsTEA

A hot sample in store. I was expecting coconut and orchid oolong flavours, but I couldn’t taste the oolong at all actually. The dominant note was ginger, with a hint of creamy coconut under it. Very odd.

drank Salted Caramel by DAVIDsTEA

Sampled this as a latte in store. I’ve had this before and was very unimpressed. It’s definitely better as a latte, but it still doesn’t have the flavours that I would hope for from a salted caramel tea. Ah well.

drank Berry Poppins by DAVIDsTEA

Sampled this iced in store today, and all I really remember is that it was a bit tart and a bit berryish, but nothing really stood out for me.

Glad I got a chance to try it but I won’t be buying any.

Definitely one of my preferred matchas from Red Leaf. Today I had it as a hot latte and it was just chocolate raspberry perfection.

drank Grapefruit Dragon by Butiki Teas

Hmm, I seem to have not awesome luck with Butiki teas. I’m not sure if this aged poorly or got contaminated (doubtful), but steeping, all this smelled like was white pepper and savoury broth, and on the palate, I’m getting predominantly pepper with a hint of that tanginess that grapefruit has. If I didn’t have grapefruit on the brain I probably wouldn’t have associated that tang with it.

Thank you Janelle for the sample. I have one cup left and I think I’ll probably pass it along to someone else.

Flavors: Broth, Peppercorn, Tangy

That’s too bad! This was an amazing tea!

Sad! I’m drinking this one right now and I love it!

drank Sun Meadow by Gurmano Tea

This is an alright flavoured green tea. It has a distinct mango flavour and a bit of a tang that reminds of me orange juice (from concentrate, not fresh stuff). Sadly, the green tea base doesn’t shine through too much, and I’m finding myself pickier and pickier about flavoured greens.

There’s nothing wrong with this – it may be getting a bit old but it hasn’t aged too badly. I think it’s mostly just not to my taste any more.

For some reason this was in my untrieds box, but I have tried it before. A lovely sweet sencha. Not extremely noteworthy, but delicious.

drank Six Summits by Teavana

I made this grandpa style in my travel mug the other day. It was delicious, but I think my infatuation with this tea is fading a bit, which is just as well, as I’m running low and it’s discontinued. It’s still an amazing combination of oolong flavour and berry fragrance and I will be sad when it’s gone.

drank Buttermilk Lemon by TeaGschwendner

I wanted so badly to try this when I first saw reviews of it, and Sil was kind enough to send me some.

I think I may have built this up a bit in my head, because I ended up not being all that impressed with it. It’s an alright creamy lemon tea, but the black base is kind of meh, and it lacks that tanginess that I expect if something is supposed to be both buttermilk and lemon flavoured.

I’m really glad I had a chance to try this, and also really glad that I didn’t end up placing an order specifically to get my hands on this (shipping + exchange rate would have been painful.) Having tea friends who share is so great :)

Flavors: Creamy, Lemon

I didn’t love it either even though lots of other folks do heh

An enjoyable white tea. Notes of cucumber and flowers. A bit sweet and juicy. I steeped this for about 4 minutes and it was pretty bland when hot, but a very nice fullness to the flavour developed as the cup cooled.

My family adored this tea….it was complicated but not overwhelming for them.

I grew up drinking jasmine green tea with meals, but really fell in love with tea on a trip to Britain in elementary school. My first great love was Earl Grey, and I still adore it and all its variants.

I discovered the beauty of loose leaf tea much later, when, on impulse, I picked up a few teas that were on clearance at a home store. My introduction to loose leaf teas were Masala Chai and Provence Rooibos by the Metropolitan Tea Co and an unknown brand of kukicha and gyokuro (little did I know what a precious treasure I’d stumbled onto with that.)

At the time I was lucky to live in a place with multiple tea shops and several places to have afternoon tea, which is a delight I still miss.

Tea is part of my daily ritual and a nice, affordable way to appease the collector in me.

I enjoy distinctive whites, greens and oolongs, flavoured blacks, and herbals that are heavy on the citrus, lavender or mint.

Rating rubric, to give myself some consistency:
0-15 Yuck, not even drinkable.
16-30 Disappointing, not really inclined to give it a second try.
31-45 Disappointing, but maybe there’s potential? Worth one more try, prepped differently.
46-60 Mediocre, not terrible but not memorable.
61-75 Not bad. I’ll definitely finish what I have and might buy again.
76-90 Very enjoyable. Tasty, complex, it’ll keep me coming back.
91-100 BEST! I love everything about it and I will drink it forever.

Beyond tea, I’m a sex educator, polyamory activist, and radical queer. I love backwoods camping, abstract painting, baking & cooking, nail polish, cats, ceramic sculpture, and home nesting.
