13 Tasting Notes

White Monkey from Adagio Teas
67

It has a murky, pale green color. Smells like my grandmother’s old house – specifically the kitchen – which was stuffy because she never opened any windows.

Light in taste, and very smooth. It’s a little sweet, but mostly tastes like vegetables. Or grass, maybe grass. I think it’s one of those teas you drink on chilly, foggy days. Not rainy days, but damp and gloomy. The days where you have absolutely nothing to do. I miss those days. I’m rambling.

Irish Breakfast from Adagio Teas
72

Smells like peaches or apricots. Tastes likes apricots too. I don’t even think I’ve had too many apricots, but upon first sip of this tea, apricots instantly came to mind, so I’m going to go with it and pretend I know what I’m talking about. This tea is very smooth; no bitterness whatsoever. It’s also very light and easy on the stomach, making it a good tea to have in the morning, or drink throughout the day.

Assam Melody from Adagio Teas
57

Not a very strong tea at all. What little flavor it does have is nice, though, and it is smooth. It’s easy to drink and gets better the more you drink it. It would go nicely with milk and sugar/honey.

Lapsang Souchong from Adagio Teas
68

My first Souchong was one cup from a local coffee house a long time ago. This is my second, so I don’t have much to compare it to. It’s not as smokey as that first cup, which is good. In fact, this feels like the right amount of smokiness – like inhaling campfire smoke, but not enough that you’re choking to death. This tea would go great with marshmallows.

As for the negative: once you get past the smokiness, there’s not much else there. I don’t get much of a tea flavor. Is this tea, or diluted Liquid Smoke?

But whatever, I like it. And I love the smell – I think I get more enjoyment from smelling it.

Jasmine Scented Pu-erh Tuocha from Chicago Tea Garden
70

It’s good, and nothing super special. I had good success putting one tuocha in a pot with boiling water and steeping it until I remember that I have tea steeping (as I often forget). The jasmine is not overpowering at all, which is what I like most. I would recommend it, however CTG is no more…and that’s sad.

Bi Luo Chun from Chicago Tea Garden
69

Tastes, looks, and smells more like a white tea.

Large Leaf from Old Trees Pu-erh from Chicago Tea Garden
88

Smells like dirt. It tastes like a soggy forest floor; like shoveling dirt into your mouth and maybe a bit of damp moss too. Tastes like dirt. Some people would say “earthy” but that word is only for people who are afraid to say they like drinking dirt. This is exactly how I like my pu-erh – dirty.

Menghai Classic Ripe Brick from Silk Road Teas
71

Has that unique flat, dirty taste which you find in most pu-erhs. Smells like an old mulch pile. Also has a mineral-like aftertaste, like you just licked the damp, stone walls of your grandmother’s basement in early spring after a rain. Or, if you could drink the smell of old books – good quality old books, not cigarette stained ones from old ladies’ yard sales, but the ones you find on bookshelves at old B&B’s in, say, Cape May. …That’s what this tea tastes like, and if that’s your thing, you’ll like it. It’s my thing – I like drinking books and licking walls.

Gunpowder Green (loose leaf) from Twinings
67

Just a decent tea to have when you just need to have some decent tea. Probably my favorite of Twinning’s loose-leaf tins, though I’ve yet to try the Prince of Wales Tea. Tastes like vegetables sprinkled with gunpowder.

Monkey Picked (Ma Liu Mie) from Silk Road Teas
87

A very light tea with a nice floral smell. Tastes like a mouth full of freshly cut grass and honey. The little nuggets are crunchy and I like to eat them.

Look at this leaf: http://i.imgur.com/mB9BD.jpg Is that not the nicest damn tea leaf you’ve ever seen?

Congou Black from Silk Road Teas
89

A good tea for everyday drinking. Has a sweet taste if you don’t brew it too long.

Green Tea (Matcha + Sencha) from Argo Tea
92

One of the best teas I have ever had. Smells like mint chocolate chip ice cream.

Yunnan Noir from Adagio Teas
86

Tastes like Strawberry Poptarts.
