drank Lime of Passion by Savoy Tea Co

The name… LOL! Who can resist a good pun?

Unfortunately, not loving this one. The lime is somewhere between Jello and a cleaning product. Something is tasting slightly minty to me, and it’s making the lime taste even a bit stranger I think. I don’t notice any passion fruit at all. And the base… meh. I’m not sure I’ll enjoy any of the green teas I got from Savoy, since they’ll all use the same base tea.

Anyway, at least the name gave me a giggle! :P

Flavors: Artificial, Chemical, Citrus Zest, Dry Grass, Grassy, Lime, Mint

Preparation
175 °F / 79 °C 2 min, 0 sec 3 tsp 16 OZ / 473 ML
thereadersteacup

:( Yeah… I don’t think that I would be a fan either. Hot lime just doesn’t do it for me.

Cameron B.

I have some lime teas that I really like, but the lime needs to be more authentic tasting for me.

thereadersteacup

I like mojito blends if that counts! Haha

From my June subscription. The other tea was one I’ve already tried and don’t like, so it went into the rehoming box he he.

This tea definitely wins for most adorable packaging. It’s (of course) Little Mermaid themed and the label has the scene from the end of the Under the Sea song, where all the fish turn and point at Ariel, but they’re pointing at the name of the tea! So cute, ha ha.

Tried it both hot and now cold brewed. It’s okay, a bit generic in my opinion. I really enjoyed the Sea Witch fruit tisane, but this one has more of a hibiscus flavor to it, with the fruits in the background. A bit of a tropical thing going on, but I also taste a bit of peach.

So not one I would order for myself, but just adore the packaging, and happy to have tried it. :)

Flavors: Cherry, Fruity, Hibiscus, Peach, Pineapple, Tart, Tropical

Preparation
Iced 8 min or more
thereadersteacup

Haha I was about to say that I haven’t tried this one yet. Then I saw the pineapple and went yup… I have not tried that one lol.

Cameron B.

Sadly Sea Witch has kiwi in it…

Uggggh damn tropical fruits lol

drank Lemon Pound Cake by Savoy Tea Co
3986 tasting notes

Sipdown! (10 | 207)

So this one smelled amazing in the bag. I happen to love lemon cake, so was excited to try it!

However, I don’t get much lemon here. It certainly does taste buttery and cakey, like a pound cake. The flavoring isn’t super duper strong, but it’s noticeable. I can taste a hint of lemon, sort of a sweet lemon drop note. But I find myself wanting much more of that lemony goodness, especially since lemon pound cake often has a delicious lemony glaze on top.

So it’s a pleasant enough tea, but doesn’t quite fulfill the promise of the name to me. I will say, the earthy base doesn’t bother me nearly as much with this tea as it did with Caramel Buttercup for some reason.

Flavors: Artificial, Butter, Cake, Candy, Earthy, Lemon, Musty, Smooth, Sweet, Woody

Preparation
200 °F / 93 °C 3 min, 0 sec 3 tsp 16 OZ / 473 ML

Maybe adding a drop of lemon juice to enhance lemon flavour?

thereadersteacup

I like the lemon loaf Tazo blend… it’s bagged but super yummy!

drank White Christmas by Harney & Sons
3986 tasting notes

Sipdown! (9 | 206)

This tea sounds so good in theory – a white tea with almond, vanilla, and cardamom.

But it tastes… I don’t even know. I guess I get a bit of cardamom, but otherwise maybe wax? Nothing even approaching vanilla or almond, and the white tea has an unpleasant musty flavor to it. None of those pleasant haylike white tea notes.

I’m a bit baffled by this one. Is it because I had the sachets? I’m just not used to such a miss from Harney & Sons, and some of the other notes are very positive. O.o

Flavors: Artificial, Cardamom, Musty, Twigs, Wax, Woody

Preparation
175 °F / 79 °C 2 min, 0 sec 16 OZ / 473 ML
thereadersteacup

There are a few that are definite misses from them in my opinion. However, I do notice that the sachets are not as good as the loose. Especially Paris, Vanilla Comoro, and citron green.

drank Enchanted Forest by Savoy Tea Co
3986 tasting notes

Sipdown! (8 | 205)

Chose this one because the name appealed to me, as for some reason Savoy neglects to mention anything about the flavor profile in the tea’s description…

As I suspected, it’s a berry-flavored black tea. Forest fruits make sense for a tea called “enchanted forest”. It has a vague dark berry flavor to it, maybe blueberry with black currant? The flavoring is very mild, a bit too mild IMO. It has a syrupy quality to it, but doesn’t become cloying like the pomegranate black tea I had earlier today.

Would be a tasty tea, if only there were a bit more of the berry going on. As-is, it’s a generic and somewhat earthy/woody black base with a subtle note of dark berry. Serviceable, but nothing I would purchase again. I am thankful it doesn’t taste like chalk to me though.

Flavors: Berry, Black Currant, Blackberry, Blueberry, Earthy, Musty, Sweet, Syrupy, Woody

Preparation
200 °F / 93 °C 3 min, 0 sec 3 tsp 16 OZ / 473 ML

This one just seemed bland to me, no matter how I prepared it. Very thin and weak-tasting with a bit of apple and clove and a bit of tartness.

Tried the last of it cold-brewed, and I think it’s maybe a bit better, but still quite bland. It’s like a watered-down version of those hibiscusy mulled cider herbal tisanes that you often see around the holidays (from B&B, for example).

Meh!

Flavors: Apple, Clove, Hibiscus, Tart, Thin, Watery

Preparation
Iced 8 min or more
thereadersteacup

For a similar blend… Try Maple Apple Cider by Stash. It’s amazing hot and cold.

Cameron B.

I actually had that one not long ago and I did enjoy it!

thereadersteacup

It’s yummy in oatmeal!

I haven’t historically been the biggest fan of fruit tisanes, but I had one that I really liked from Trader Nicks recently, and that’s sort of made me consider them again. Plus this has such a cute name that I couldn’t help myself LOL.

It’s quite delicious. Sort of tastes like Pixy Stix, but in a good way. Great balance of sweet and tart, without a lot of hibiscus going on. Mostly I taste pineapple and apple, with a bit of creamy coconut poking its head out every once in a while. Very nice tarter pineapple aftertaste that reminds me of the real thing.

Not sure I would go out of my way to reorder this, but I could see picking some up if I was planning to make a Savoy order. Really pleasant pineapply fruit tisane that I’m sure would be delicious iced as well.

Flavors: Apple, Candy, Coconut, Creamy, Fruity, Pineapple, Sweet, Tart

Preparation

Ooh…there’s a tin of that at a little pie shop about 10 miles from my front door!

More Savoy sample fun!

I’m a bit conflicted on this one. I think the caramel flavoring here is excellent. I don’t often enjoy caramel-flavored things, because so often they taste incredibly artificial and cloying to me. But this tea has a nice balance of buttery-caramel-sauce sort of notes mixed with caramelized-sugar-crème-brûlée-topping sort of notes.

However, the base tea is very woody/earthy, and to me it’s a bit of a mismatch with the more desserty flavoring. I think this flavor profile would’ve perhaps made a bit more sense on an Assam base, with those nice malty notes. As-is, it seems a bit… cacophonous? To me?

Anyway, happy to have tried it! And really, an excellent caramel flavoring.

This is the 2022 harvest of this tea. I should really drink the current year’s as well, preferably before 2024 LOL.

This is actually very interesting, it has a strong mineral note to it that I wasn’t expecting. It’s an unshaded sencha, so quite light overall compared to the shaded teas I’ve had lately. Grassy, fresh, with some gentle vegetal notes to it. That minerality is unusual though, and very interesting. Seems like a unique note to this year’s harvest.

Flavors: Astringent, Freshly Cut Grass, Grassy, Metallic, Mineral, Soybean, Spring Water, Vegetal, Wet Rocks, Zucchini

Preparation

Free sample from my June subscription.

Not a huge fan of this, it has a very syrupy red fruits flavor to it, and then to add vanilla on top of it is just too cloying for me. It definitely reminds me of some French-style “red fruits” teas. I feel like it’s reminding me of a specific tea, but I can’t place which one at the moment…

Anyway, not a fan but always appreciate free samples. :)

- Total 2024 Sipdowns: 6

I prefer my tea lukewarm or at room temperature and without milk or sugar. I steep Western style, and fluctuate between using big mugs or small teapots depending on the season. Occasionally I’ll brew Gongfu style when I’m in the mood. I’ll also often use a kyusu for Japanese teas.

I am always up for a swap! Just let me know if you’d like to try something in my cupboard.

Tea Preferences:
I enjoy both flavored and unflavored teas in many forms. These days, I drink mostly flavored teas, and I tend to gravitate most toward black, green, oolong, and herbal varieties. I do have a special fondness for straight Japanese green teas, however. I also enjoy maté, rooibos, and honeybush. I love matcha and drink it often! Fruit tisanes are not a favorite, but I’m always willing to try them.

I do not sweeten my teas, and pre-sweetened teas are usually too sweet for me. I also do not enjoy stevia.

Fruit: All of them! My ‘go-to’s tend to be in the red fruits, stonefruit, or citrus spectra. I also really love apple, banana, berry, fig, lychee, melon, pear, and rhubarb flavors. Tropical fruits aren’t among my favorites, but I still enjoy them once in a while – especially passionfruit, mango, and pineapple. I am not generally a fan of coconut in tea, though there are some exceptions.

Dessert: I love creamy vanilla and marshmallow flavors, along with anything in the caramel family such as butterscotch, toffee, or maple. Chocolate is also a favorite, though I’m often disappointed by it in tea. And don’t forget anything buttery, cakey, or cookie-y!

Floral: I’m a little bit more particular in this category. I very much enjoy jasmine, even strong jasmine, along with sakura, chamomile, and elderflower. Osmanthus is also a favorite of mine. But I’m not crazy about rose or lavender flavors, and I prefer hibiscus in moderation only.

Spices: I don’t generally find myself drawn to masala chai, but I do enjoy spices combined with other flavors. My favorite spices are the warm ones, especially cinnamon, nutmeg, anise, and cardamom. A bit of heat from black pepper or chili is okay too, as long as it’s not overwhelming! Ginger can be a lovely accent, but I find it difficult to drink as a starring flavor.

Aromatics: I’m obsessed with Earl Grey! I also love cooling flavors such as mint (especially spearmint), pine, juniper, and eucalyptus. I am not a fan of strong rosemary or sage in tea.

Favorite Companies:
3 Leaf
Bird & Blend
Dammann Frères
Harney & Sons
Kyoto Obubu Tea Farms
Lupicia
Old Barrel Tea Co
Simpson & Vail
Taiwan Tea Crafts
TeaVivre

Tea Rating Scale:
90-100: Outstanding! Permanent cupboard resident
80-89: Great – a possible staple
70-79: Good, but I wouldn’t buy it
60-69: It’s decent
50-59: Meh… I may or may not have finished the cup
40-49: Ick. Couldn’t finish it.
00-39: Repulsive, I spat it out

I will sometimes refrain from rating a tea if I feel I’m too biased due to my personal dislikes, or if I suspect the sample has been compromised by age or scent contamination.
