This one is cookies & cream flavored, which is interesting. I do get what they were going for, it does have a bit of that dark cocoa cookie note to it, though without the sweetness. It actually reminds me of a cookies & cream Powerbar that I remember eating once LOL. I guess that makes sense since those are both cookies & cream flavored things without actually having actual cookie or milk in them.

Anyway, it’s not terrible, but certainly very artificial in taste. Not one I would order for myself, though I’m not much of a dessert tea lover in general these days.

Finished this one off with creamer. It’s honestly almost a bit too much with creamer added, since the flavors are very sweet and rich anyway. But I feel completely exhausted this morning for no apparent reason, so I could use some sugar LOL.

The hazelnut-esque nutty notes are nice with the vanilla and hint of spice. With the creamer, it almost reminds me of a roasted chestnut boba I had recently… I think it’s one of the better CS holiday teas, and I would consider picking up another box if I could find it easily/cheaply near me.

Still making my way through these cute Moomin teabags! This one is a black tea with bergamot and orange.

The flavors are nice enough, but the base is actually quite earthy-tasting, which I don’t think has been true of the other flavored black teas I’ve had? I recall them having a more generic “tea” sort of base. Maybe it’s just the interaction with one of the flavors that’s making it taste so earthy/mineral to me… Anyway, the bergamot here is quite mild and leans more citrusy than floral, probably due to the sweet orange that it’s paired with.

Pleasant tea. Not one I would go out of my way to order, but I enjoyed my few cups of it.

Sipdown! (14 | 169)

Also my random tea of the day. I only had one single-serving packet left, so also a sipdown yay!

This is a lovely one – it’s like a mellower version of their Kabuse Sencha. Makes sense given it’s the stems of shaded leaves used to make matcha. Has a nice vegetal intensity to it still, heavy on the spinach and kabocha, but it’s a bit softer and smoother than the Kabuse, and it also has some nice nutty notes to it. The description mentions tomato, which I’m not sure about, but I don’t think that’s really a note I think about in tea, so maybe I just don’t have the association.

Anyway, a very nice and flavorful Japanese green with a bit of a unique character of its own. Happily, I have an unopened bag of this somewhere, according to my spreadsheet. :)

Also, Obubu’s kukicha are all named after birds, and Mejiro (めじろ) is apparently the Japanese word for the warbling white-eye, which looks to be an adorable little green chonk of a bird with white around its eye. :3

Flavors: Cashew, Chestnut, Freshly Cut Grass, Grass, Hay, Kabocha, Nuts, Nutty, Smooth, Spinach, Squash, Sweet, Vegetal

Preparation
175 °F / 79 °C 1 min, 0 sec 5 g 8 OZ / 240 ML

That’s lovely name for such a bird. In Czech it’s Kruhoočko japonské, which literally means Japanese Round-eye. Well, that makes sense too.

drank WÄINÖ by Nordqvist
3986 tasting notes

Random tea of the day!

So far this random thing is working out for me, I’ve gotten one tea that I love and two that I hadn’t tried yet. This is one of three herbal tisanes that I got from Nordqvist that are made with native Finnish botanicals, this one being cloudberry, nettle, and a few other herbs.

To be honest, I’m not getting much in the fruity department. Mostly I’m tasting mellow and earthy herbs, and then there’s a little hint of tang from the cloudberries that leaves a slight lingering tartness in my mouth. It’s a nice, comforting herbaceous sort of blend for the evening, but nothing special enough that I would feel the need to order it again.

Flavors: Earthy, Grass, Hay, Herbaceous, Herbs, Roots, Sweet, Tart

drank Ripe Mango Oolong by Lupicia
3986 tasting notes

Sipdown! (13 | 168)

A forever favorite from Lupicia. Both this one and Melon Oolong are definitely in the category of “always restock” for me, they’re both fruity oolongs but quite different in execution. The melon is more sweet and whimsical, while this definitely has a more elegant, refined feel, with the floral baozhong base and the subtler, more natural mango. Really just an excellent mango tea and flavored oolong, and always such a joy to drink.

So it’s goodbye for now, yummy tea! I tend to wait until Lupicia has a seasonal release that I want before restocking there, since the shipping is on the pricier side. So this one will definitely return, but maybe not until autumn rolls around. Happily I have their Alphonso Mango black tea to tide me over until then! :)

Flavors: Floral, Fruity, Green, Mango, Nectar, Round, Silky, Smooth, Sweet, Thick, Tropical

Preparation

I caved and ordered my Mother’s Day gift from Ashman today from Lupicia. I did let him know immediately afterward. Heehee

Cameron B.

Oooooh what did you get?! :D

ashmanra

Cerisier, Decaf Muscat, Jardin Sauvage, and Decaf Sakurambo! All decaf options because that is what we are lowest on.

Cameron B.

I got Cerisier too, I haven’t tried it yet.

Dustin

I miss having decaf Sakurambo around.

ashmanra

I think I am most excited about trying Cerisier. I have only had Sakurambo once or twice but I am looking forward to having my own and being able to drink it at night. As the days are getting longer, I am really wanting to sip on something late in the evening and we are super low on things that are really flavorful. I am tired of just chamomile and chamomile blends.

Cameron B.

I love Sakurambo! But I haven’t tried the decaf version.

drank Sakura & Berry by Lupicia
3986 tasting notes

Random tea of the day!

I was so happy when this was selected, this is such a nice tea from Lupicia and perfect for the time of year. I love how the strawberry flavor brings out the fruitier notes of the sakura, but I can still taste that salty-savory undertone and it makes for such a nice combo. This is my favorite of Lupicia’s sakura collection, and one that I will happily reorder.

Actually, I noticed I didn’t have a ton left in the tin when I opened it, so I was tempted to order some now while it’s still available. No, bad Cameron, LOL! Knowing me, I won’t even have finished the small amount I have left by the time next year comes around… Plus I already made an order when the sakura collection came out, and got Cerisier (because I haven’t tried it in ages and never wrote a note for it apparently) and then restocked a couple of faves. So I’m good to go, and I do not need any more tea! (she tells herself, unconvincingly…)

Flavors: Cherry Blossom, Floral, Fruity, Sakura, Salty, Savory, Smooth, Strawberry, Sweet

Restraint high five for you!

Cameron B.

Ha ha thank you, much appreciated. We’ll ignore the fact that I just ordered several teas from a different company a few days ago… >>

beerandbeancurd

Can’t relate at all. o_O

Dustin

They have a sakura berry tea?! I was at two Lupicia stores a few weeks ago and didn’t see any sakura tea! I’m going to have to take a few deep breaths and see if I can overcome the urge to place an order.

drank White Christmas by Stash Tea
3986 tasting notes

Sipdown! (11 | 166)

This tea was just not great. There’s basically zero evidence of white tea IMO, it mostly just tastes like a peppermint wet rag, and I feel like the earthiness of the ginger is only exacerbating that wet rag quality. There is a slight tingle of ginger warmth on the tongue.

Kind of annoyed that I had to order from the Stash website to get this, since it’s apparently an online exclusive. At least I got some cute mugs in that order LOL. :P

drank Sweet Monsoon by The Chai Box
3986 tasting notes

Sipdown! (10 | 165)

I randomly ordered some more blends from The Chai Box the other day, not sure how I even ended up on their website, but I guess that’s how it goes sometimes lol. So because of that, I was inspired to sip on some of their teas that I already have.

This one sounds really good, it has mango and coconut with cinnamon and clove on a CTC base. And it’s certainly not bad, it’s just… The clove overwhelms it for me. I’m not a big clove fan in the first place, but here it’s most of what I taste. I don’t think I taste cinnamon at all, there is some mango and a touch of coconut. But mostly I’m tasting clove.

I guess this tea and I just weren’t meant to be! A shame, but I do love some of their other blends.

Flavors: Clove, Mango, Sweet

Sipdown! (9 | 164)

This one was fairly enjoyable. It’s a rooibos with banana and vanilla flavors, and it ends up tasting a bit like banana taffy to me. I only steeped it for 2 minutes because I found the base overpowering otherwise.

The banana is definitely a bit artificial and I would like more vanilla or creaminess, but still a nice rooibos blend for the evening. :)

Flavors: Artificial, Banana, Candy, Rooibos, Sweet, Woody

Bio

Hi, I’m Cameron! I’m a 30-something software engineer currently living in Austin, Texas with my husband and our two pugs, Gobo and Ume. I tend to cycle between my different hobbies, and they include piano, knitting, video games, board games, miniature painting, planners, bento, KBeauty, and – of course – TEA! But really, what I’m best at is “collecting” hobby-related things… ;)

~ 2024 SIPDOWN CHALLENGE! ~
- January Sipdowns: 6
- Total 2024 Sipdowns: 6

I prefer my tea lukewarm or at room temperature and without milk or sugar. I steep Western style, and fluctuate between using big mugs or small teapots depending on the season. Occasionally I’ll brew Gongfu style when I’m in the mood. I’ll also often use a kyusu for Japanese teas.

I am always up for a swap! Just let me know if you’d like to try something in my cupboard.

Tea Preferences:
I enjoy both flavored and unflavored teas in many forms. These days, I drink mostly flavored teas, and I tend to gravitate most toward black, green, oolong, and herbal varieties. I do have a special fondness for straight Japanese green teas, however. I also enjoy maté, rooibos, and honeybush. I love matcha and drink it often! Fruit tisanes are not a favorite, but I’m always willing to try them.

I do not sweeten my teas, and pre-sweetened teas are usually too sweet for me. I also do not enjoy stevia.

Fruit: All of them! My ‘go-to’s tend to be in the red fruits, stonefruit, or citrus spectra. I also really love apple, banana, berry, fig, lychee, melon, pear, and rhubarb flavors. Tropical fruits aren’t among my favorites, but I still enjoy them once in a while – especially passionfruit, mango, and pineapple. I am not generally a fan of coconut in tea, though there are some exceptions.

Dessert: I love creamy vanilla and marshmallow flavors, along with anything in the caramel family such as butterscotch, toffee, or maple. Chocolate is also a favorite, though I’m often disappointed by it in tea. And don’t forget anything buttery, cakey, or cookie-y!

Floral: I’m a little bit more particular in this category. I very much enjoy jasmine, even strong jasmine, along with sakura, chamomile, and elderflower. Osmanthus is also a favorite of mine. But I’m not crazy about rose or lavender flavors, and I prefer hibiscus in moderation only.

Spices: I don’t generally find myself drawn to masala chai, but I do enjoy spices combined with other flavors. My favorite spices are the warm ones, especially cinnamon, nutmeg, anise, and cardamom. A bit of heat from black pepper or chili is okay too, as long as it’s not overwhelming! Ginger can be a lovely accent, but I find it difficult to drink as a starring flavor.

Aromatics: I’m obsessed with Earl Grey! I also love cooling flavors such as mint (especially spearmint), pine, juniper, and eucalyptus. I am not a fan of strong rosemary or sage in tea.

Favorite Companies:
3 Leaf
Bird & Blend
Dammann Frères
Harney & Sons
Kyoto Obubu Tea Farms
Lupicia
Old Barrel Tea Co
Simpson & Vail
Taiwan Tea Crafts
TeaVivre

Tea Rating Scale:
90-100: Outstanding! Permanent cupboard resident
80-89: Great – a possible staple
70-79: Good, but I wouldn’t buy it
60-69: It’s decent
50-59: Meh… I may or may not have finished the cup
40-49: Ick. Couldn’t finish it.
00-39: Repulsive, I spat it out

I will sometimes refrain from rating a tea if I feel I’m too biased due to my personal dislikes, or if I suspect the sample has been compromised by age or scent contamination.
