Sipdown! (16 | 138)

The second tea from my April subscription set.

It’s a pleasant enough herbal tisane, but the thyme is a bit too strong for me. It makes the whole thing taste a bit like a roast chicken, which is sort of odd LOL. Otherwise I’m mostly tasting the peppermint, and perhaps a hint of fennel.

I could see it being soothing maybe, but the thyme just makes it weird for me.

Admittedly, wasn’t a huge fan of this one.

It just has so many floral notes, it becomes perfumey to me. There’s jasmine, rose, lavender, and lotus here, and the combination is just so so soapy IMO. I do taste a little of the strawberry fruitiness, though it’s not that specific to my tastebuds.

Luckily I only had a small 10-gram tin of this one, I don’t think I could’ve managed more heh.

Adagio CommuniTEA – April 20th, 2023

Yay, I caught up to today! \o/

I’m not really a fan of first flush Darjeeling, so this isn’t my favorite. It has some nice hay notes to it, but it’s also a bit sharp and floral. I tend to like later flushes better, as to me they’re a bit more malty and smooth.

Still a pleasant cuppa, even if it’s not my personal favorite type of tea.

I like this one much better than Foxtrot, it seems more balanced to me.

I can taste the lemongrass and chamomile fairly equally, and then the peppermint adds a nice lingering cool finish. The chamomile makes it light and airy, and then the lemongrass adds a citrusy sweetness. And not a wet rag in sight!

A nice herbal tisane that I could see myself drinking regularly. However, I would just blend it myself.

Adagio CommuniTEA – April 18th, 2023

This is just a mix of kukicha and hojicha.

It’s interesting, the hojicha obviously dominates the flavor, but I feel like the kukicha gives it more body and a more viscous texture. There’s also a gentle vegetal note that adds complexity to the toasty, autumn leafy hojicha.

Enjoyable for sure. I don’t think it’s something I would buy though, since I could easily steep something similar from my own cupboard if I wanted to.

Flavors: Autumn Leaf Pile, Roasted, Round, Savory, Smooth, Thick, Toasty, Umami, Vegetal, Viscous, Woody

From my April subscription package!

I knew I would hate this as soon as I smelled the leaves ha ha… It smells like generic cherry lollipops, a flavor of which I am not a fan, and also roses. Why stop at one flavor I don’t enjoy when I can have two? ;)

But I figured I would steep up a small cup just to give it a chance. It’s fairly mellow, which helps a bit, but it still tastes like a cherry lollipop combined with powdery floral notes.

Definitely not for me, this will go into my rehoming box. A shame, because the label art is so pretty and I love Mary Poppins! Alas, someone else will hopefully get to enjoy the pretty packaging.

Adagio CommuniTEA – April 17th, 2023

I haven’t historically been a huge fan of shui xian, it tends to be a bit too floral for my tastes.

However, this just tastes like a very generic Wuyi oolong, so I needn’t have worried. It has that trademark mineral flavor that makes me think of cliff teas (not unlike licking a cliff, LOL). And then there’s some toastiness and autumn leaves, along with a clear sweetness. The description mentions apricot and spice, but I definitely don’t taste any of that.

Not a bad tea, but completely lacking in personality. Very drinkable though.

Adagio CommuniTEA – April 16th, 2023

Ooh, another custom blend. Honestly, I was expecting more of them since there are so many compared to the normal teas. But this is only the second for April so far.

I’m not a coconut lover, so this isn’t my favorite. It’s a pleasant enough tea, very mild and sweet with mostly natural tasting coconut notes and a touch of pineapple gummy bear, along with a sprinkle of warm spice from the cardamom. Thankfully I only taste a hint of the almond flavor. The base is weak sauce as usual, especially since it’s cut with their generic oolong as well.

So not for me, but I can see the appeal of the coconut & cardamom flavor combo.

This one wasn’t quite what I expected. First of all, the base tastes more like a green tea than an oolong IMO, even though it looks like a rolled oolong. It has a strong vegetal flavor reminiscent of cooked collard greens, along with hints of bitterness, and it causes the whole blend to lean quite savory. It ends up tasting a bit like a citrusy vegetable broth?

Not bad, just not the citrus oolong that I was expecting. I do enjoy the flavor of the kaffir lime leaves though, and they pair well with the vegetal base.

Another one that I mostly sipped through with creamer added, but having this last cuppa plain to refresh my memory.

Not a favorite for me, as there’s a lot of clove going on and I’m not the biggest clove fan. I wish there was more orange and less clove. Still a pleasant tea, just not to my personal tastes. The creamer did help mellow the clove out a bit, which was nice.

I smile every time I see evidence that people are still drinking this one. Mom would be pleased.

Ha ha, it’s definitely a classic!

But really, what I’m best at is “collecting” hobby-related things… ;)

I prefer my tea lukewarm or at room temperature and without milk or sugar. I steep Western style, and fluctuate between using big mugs or small teapots depending on the season. Occasionally I’ll brew Gongfu style when I’m in the mood. I’ll also often use a kyusu for Japanese teas.

I am always up for a swap! Just let me know if you’d like to try something in my cupboard.

Tea Preferences:
I enjoy both flavored and unflavored teas in many forms. These days, I drink mostly flavored teas, and I tend to gravitate most toward black, green, oolong, and herbal varieties. I do have a special fondness for straight Japanese green teas, however. I also enjoy maté, rooibos, and honeybush. I love matcha and drink it often! Fruit tisanes are not a favorite, but I’m always willing to try them.

I do not sweeten my teas, and pre-sweetened teas are usually too sweet for me. I also do not enjoy stevia.

Fruit: All of them! My ‘go-to’s tend to be in the red fruits, stonefruit, or citrus spectra. I also really love apple, banana, berry, fig, lychee, melon, pear, and rhubarb flavors. Tropical fruits aren’t among my favorites, but I still enjoy them once in a while – especially passionfruit, mango, and pineapple. I am not generally a fan of coconut in tea, though there are some exceptions.

Dessert: I love creamy vanilla and marshmallow flavors, along with anything in the caramel family such as butterscotch, toffee, or maple. Chocolate is also a favorite, though I’m often disappointed by it in tea. And don’t forget anything buttery, cakey, or cookie-y!

Floral: I’m a little bit more particular in this category. I very much enjoy jasmine, even strong jasmine, along with sakura, chamomile, and elderflower. Osmanthus is also a favorite of mine. But I’m not crazy about rose or lavender flavors, and I prefer hibiscus in moderation only.

Spices: I don’t generally find myself drawn to masala chai, but I do enjoy spices combined with other flavors. My favorite spices are the warm ones, especially cinnamon, nutmeg, anise, and cardamom. A bit of heat from black pepper or chili is okay too, as long as it’s not overwhelming! Ginger can be a lovely accent, but I find it difficult to drink as a starring flavor.

Aromatics: I’m obsessed with Earl Grey! I also love cooling flavors such as mint (especially spearmint), pine, juniper, and eucalyptus. I am not a fan of strong rosemary or sage in tea.

Favorite Companies:
3 Leaf
Bird & Blend
Dammann Frères
Harney & Sons
Kyoto Obubu Tea Farms
Lupicia
Old Barrel Tea Co
Simpson & Vail
Taiwan Tea Crafts
TeaVivre

Tea Rating Scale:
90-100: Outstanding! Permanent cupboard resident
80-89: Great – a possible staple
70-79: Good, but I wouldn’t buy it
60-69: It’s decent
50-59: Meh… I may or may not have finished the cup
40-49: Ick. Couldn’t finish it.
00-39: Repulsive, I spat it out

I will sometimes refrain from rating a tea if I feel I’m too biased due to my personal dislikes, or if I suspect the sample has been compromised by age or scent contamination.
