drank Coconut Oolong by Zen Tea
513 tasting notes

Thank you SO much Zen Tea for this amazing sample!

Coconut Oolong, where have you been all my life? This is a seriously amazing oolong, it’s delicate but full of coconut flavour – CREAMY and slightly floral while being naturally sweet.
Milky and buttery – the dry smell almost reminded me of buttered popcorn.

Resteeping and putting in the fridge for a delicious iced tea, I can’t wait!

This will definitely be a cupboard staple when I have the means.

I am SO excited to write this review for the amazing Cookies & Cream flavour on my first time trying the Black matcha base! I’ll ruin the surprise and say it is a delicious change from the usual.

I feel like this flavour is perfect for the Black base, as when I think of Cookies & Cream I think of oreos, or the yummy white chocolate bar with dark cookie bits in it. I feel like they were kind of meant to be together, and since it was on sale I thought it a perfect chance to give it a try!

The scent and flavour is wonderful – not vegetal like the green matcha, I can’t really smell the base tea through the strength of the yummy C&C flavour (I did splurge for Robust this time!).

I whisked it up and it was very smooth! Not as frothy, but no lumps – so far so good. As for the taste, it is such a nice change from my other matchas! I would guess it is a China black – what I can tell about the base is that it is naturally sweet and goes perfectly with the chocolate flavours in the tea.

I used 185 for the temp to be safe, since I’m consuming the leaves instead of just steeping them, I didn’t want it to scorch or burn! Delicious first few sips, but with the addition of milk and sugar it transforms! Have you ever had powdered Milk Tea? It totally reminded me of that – I’m sure it’s the same idea actually, except now you get to control what the milk is (almond? Soy? 2%?) and the amount of sugar! Total comfort in the cup with the taste of chocolate cookies with a creamy white icing.

I’m glad I went for Robust, but next time I would get even more flavouring for this one – that said, I might just need to get used to the Black base and the flavouring will pop even more!

Here’s where it can be found, I definitely recommend the black base: http://www.redleaftea.com/matcha-tea/cookies-and-cream-matcha.html

Oooooh, I’m definitely going to try this one out with the black matcha base!

I liked it a lot! I’ll try to remember to send some your way ;)

Let me begin by saying that I’ve read all the reviews for this matcha, and although it sounds delicious, I never thought Bavarian Cream would be a flavour I crave. I love donuts with fillings, don’t get me wrong, but they aren’t something I jones for in the middle of the night. (I haven’t been pregnant yet, so that could change! Haha). I guess what I’m trying to say is – I already have the Cheesecake Matcha, how amazing could Bavarian Cream be?

The answer? Extremely amazing. Absolutely amazing. Exclaim it to the heavens! I got the delicate flavouring as usual (http://www.redleaftea.com/matcha-tea/bavarian-cream-matcha.html).

There’s something about this flavour that took me by surprise and wooed me. The smell is sweet and creamy, no mistaking it for “vanilla” or something generic, it’s quite a specific scent. The aroma is true to the taste, hallelujah! There’s almost a “thickness” to it, and certainly a richness, that is reminiscent of its namesake. Creamy creamy creamy! The smell and taste of biting into that perfect area of donut where all the cream is. I personally like to save that part for the last, if I’m lucky. ;)

Thankfully with this matcha, I get the best part all to myself!

My personal favourite way to enjoy this matcha is as a hot latte with a pinch of sugar, to make the flavour pop and enhance the cream (if it can get any creamier – my goodness!). That said, I also shook it up in a water bottle and took it to work as an iced tea and again it really surprised me! No sugar added + true Bavarian Cream flavour = a happy Ash-Lee servicing customers with a buzz! Thanks Red Leaf Tea!

This one really does have a creamy consistency! It’s so tasty.

I know right? I think we can all agree on its deliciousness ;)

Yes I do love this one. Very nice when mixed with the Strawberry Matcha too.

Well well Liberteas, I know what I will be bringing to work tomorrow :D

I am about to mix this with orange!

Having this in my water bottle today!
I’m finding it’s drying out my mouth a tad, but it tastes good so I keep going back for more! I definitely needed the energy today.
Also, my boss is on vacation for 2 weeks so we’re allowed to have drinks at the desk until she comes back… >_> sshh. it’s a secret.
haha I’m such a rebel.

sheesh, why no drinks on the desk :(

Watermelon tea sounds interesting. Is the flavor strong?

I believe I got Robust on this one, so the flavour is mayb e even too strong for me haha! Next time I would get delicate, but yes, it is very watermelon tasting!

@CupofTree – you got me! I have no idea.

Sooo for some reason I don’t have a rating on this tea when I know I have reviewed it a few times. Welp! Here’s my rating! haha

I used 1 tsp instead of my usual 2 tsps. It tastes soo much better when I’m light on the leaf – I just hope it works just as well!

The Lush hiring party went super swell, so here’s my story: I worked from 8:30-5, stayed at the mall until the hiring party at 6, took the bus home and got home at 7:30 – reached in my purse to find the keys to be.. well.. not there. So! I sat in tim horton’s for 3 hours, sipping an extra large steeped tea, thinking about how awesome my interview was and when Mike finally got home I was so wired!

Took a bath with my free Lush bubble bar, and now I’m sippin this magical tea, waiting for it to kick in because I am still so wired and happy. Come on tea, I work at 8:30 again tomorrow, help me out here!

I love this tea.

The end!

Aww, I’m so happy it went well! Yay you! Tea in the bath! When I get a tub, I’ll be doing this for sure! I will also live my dream of bathing in Jasmine tea. :D
Hope you find your keys!

I love it…there’s action(mall), conflict(keys), resolution(tea in the bath)…and love(mike)

So happy for you! Ugh I would love to spend all day surrounded by lush :D Fingers crossed; keep us updated!

tunes&tea, you’re awesome :) DaisyChubb, great to hear you had an awesome interview. I’ve got my fingers crossed. (But I have my fingers and toes crossed for the Davids Tea job!)

@softrevolution – my sister used to work at Lush. She got so much free stuff, it was ridiculous. Her room smelled like a Lush store (and probably still does). Headache central!

Which bubble bar did you get?

Haha I used to have a biiiiit of a lush obsession. I kept all my goodies wrapped up and in a big tupperware tub under my bed. Even through that my entire room (and, faintly, the entire apartment) smelled like lush goodness. My partner thought I was crazy, but i would just bask in the gloriousness. Ohhh how I miss it!

haha thank you everyone! I have the best tea friends in the whole world, obviously ;)

@Mercuryhime – I can’t wait until you get a tub! LIVE THE DREAM! :D

@tunes – that seriously made my day, maybe I could make a fringe theatre show about it? I’m at a loss for inspiration so that might be the one! :D

@soft – used to?! oh noes, not any more? it is a pricey obsession I must admit, so getting the job would definitely help with that haha ;)

@Miss – thank you! Yes I would more than happily take either (or both!) DT & Lush! ah!

@Heather – it was one I’ve never tried before, Blue Skies & Fluffy White Clouds! It was a nice change from my usual super sweet candy scents :3

I like Blue Skies, but I haven’t had any in ages.

Uh oh this tea is NOT for me haha.
I made a matcha shot of it and .. well.. I couldn’t breathe. haha personally I don’t get spearmint (my fave!) I get peppermint all the way. And it hurts! I added some milk to try to tame it but by then it was too late haha

However – I am going to bake with this at Christmas! And mix it in teeeeny tiny amounts with chocolate matcha or hot chocolate. So don’t worry! Everything is gonna be alright :D

Mint is a fab addition to hot chocolate!

Mm, I bet this would be great with a Black Matcha base since it has some naturally chocolatey notes.

I really didn’t think I would fall in love with this flavour, but I’m drinking it out of my water bottle as an iced tea at work today and it’s creamy and delish! Really does taste like the inside of a donut!
haha I am lovin’ it.

LUSH Hiring Party #2 happens tonight in a few hours. Wish me luck as I have no tattoos OR a crazy hair colour! So I will need everyone else to be just as plain so I can get the job pls. haha

Good luck!

Good luck!

As I sip this amazing offering from a company I feel like I am friends with, I can’t help but be disturbed by the claims of certain people on the internet. Claims? Slander.

I’m upset, because I truly feel like a friend is being attacked – not a company, just a friend.

I feel like I’ve learned TOO much from my purchases from Verdant tea. I feel so blessed to have been given this sample from aisling of tea ! It means a lot. THANKYOU!

I rinse. I sip. I repeat!
Beauty in a cup. More than flavour, yes! More than words. Just enjoyment. But also sadness.

- – -

There are notes in this cup that are reminiscent of the Cornfields Shu I miss already! This is definitely both deeper and brighter with mustiness but also light citrus notes! It’s like a ping pong game with my tastebuds – but it definitely brings me happiness and joy!

Verdant tea has brought tears to my eyes with some of their teas – evoked real emotion in an actor who fakes life every day. What can I say, I’m off my little soap box now. :B

Hmm… Did I miss something? Seems so …
“can’t help but be disturbed by the claims of certain people on the internet. Claims? Slander.”
What are you referring to?

pmed you 4 times by accident! lol sorry

I have never ordered from Verdant but I probably will eventually. I have had samples of several of their teas in swaps and they were magnificent. I haven’t seen anything bad about them ever before, so I guess I missed whatever happened. I think most everyone feels that they are a “Creme de la Creme” company.

claims?? what? now I need to know!

Haters gonna hate. And elitists are going to think they are better than everyone else.

I guess I missed something too

Decided not to share more because it makes the people causing trouble get even more attention.

I definitely understand, Bonnie. I went looking for it and now I wish I hadn’t.

Me too Dinosara….

Thanks for your support. This makes my day! I am really happy to be a part of the tea community here on Steepster, and to have the support of friends and fellow tea-lovers. This is such an awesome place of self-selected people interested in helping each other grow. It really stands out on the web.

In any case, I am grateful for all the support of the Steepster community and for your post, and the comments here, and for Bonnie’s words on that thread. I wouldn’t be in business without all of you, so I am glad to have the means to keep searching out exciting teas to share, and improving the blog, the videos, etc.
All my best,

aisling of tea

I’m so glad you’re enjoying your swap teas!

Sorry for being absent from Steepster for so long, everyone :( It’s been an interesting few months, finally doing some physical therapy to get myself back into “good” health…Had an acl reconstruction about 10 years ago that never really healed right, so 10 years of an imbalance spreading through my whole body…When you start having fatigue after going up two flights of stairs, and you are only 28 years old, you start to get a bit scared.

So now that that is out of the way, time to address whatever criticisms that seem to have been leveled towards Verdant… “It’s expensive…” Well, duh…Verdant is not some bargain basement, eBay run wholesale business. When is the last time anyone has been to Teavana? Not trying to knock Teavana, as it holds a special place in my heart for being the shop that opened my eyes to the world of loose leaf tea.

I could tweet David tonight, and most likely have a response tomorrow(well, considering tomorrow is thanksgiving, probably Friday…he deserves some time with his wife!) Same with Facebook or email. David has always been there to answer any questions I have had.

I must relate a story about my interaction with David. This was over the summer, probably around July. I had questions for him about puer, differences between sheng and shu. I also related my dislike for extreme mustiness, which to me almost seemed moldy(something I have gotten somewhat accustomed to, I love the 2007 Xingyang Shu and Yanxin Reserve nuggets, and am getting used to the 98 Xingyang.) I received an email response from David within two hours, covering all of my questions, with suggestions as well. Now, if that were all of the story, I would still be pretty darn pleased. In my subsequent order, along with the usual note from David, there was also a sample of the Yanxin 04 shu nuggets, in a plastic bag with a hand written label that also said “our least ‘musty’ shu.” He knew my preferences, and tailored my sample accordingly. I found that gesture extremely satisfying, and from that moment on I decided that while I may not get all my tea from Verdant, I would always buy tea from Verdant! Seriously, if Verdant stocked every tea imaginable, I would buy everything from just David…

I have also bought from Teavana, TeaTrekker, Cloudwalker, American Tea Room, TeaSpring, Dragon Teahouse and Upton Imports, and while I have no problems with any of those companies, I prefer Verdant. Price isn’t an issue for me, while it may be for some/many, the service, quick shipping, tea quality and easy access to a knowledgeable owner more than compensate for any extra price!

Now if I could just restrain myself from buying any new dark oolong, black or puer tea…Ugh, but I can’t resist!!! Friday I must get some of the Yu Lu Yan black tea…and I think there may be a budset shu on Monday that I will need to try… I’m mad at myself for not getting an ounce of that 96 sheng while it was available :( went back on later that night and it was all gone!!! Oh, what have I missed! That’s why I will have to get some of the new black tea Friday, and the shu(and whatever I find interesting) Monday…I don’t want to wait and find the new black tea to be sold out on Monday!!!

I don’t know how often I will be posting in the future, I’m sorry I seem to “binge post.” It’s just the way I am, and in no way am I trying to be disrespectful!

P.S. I was the one who got the bigger Zhuni pot, and I have seasoned it for Xingyang 07/98, plus Yanxin Nuggets!! I’m loving it so far!!

How does one like a comment? HyBr1d, I hope you’ll feel better soon! And well put!

Thanks for thinking of us Hy! I hope you’re feeling much better and know you have the amazing tea by your side to help you through.

We miss you friend – your post was inspiring, optimistic and passionate! Not disrespectful in the least – quite the opposite. :) Good to see you!

You can call me Daisy.

I’m a 24 year old (not so budding) thespian – just moved to the Maritimes from the Saskatchewan Prairies. I’m way too polite, aka Proud to be a Canadian. I love it here by the water – it must remind me of tea or something ;)

My favourite tea companies are DavidsTea and Verdant Tea. They please my palette in different ways – and I love them both for it.

My rating system is as follows:
95-100: I will stock it as soon as I can, if I haven’t already! Permanent collection worthy.

86-95: I would stock this tea if I could, but my collection is just too full to warrant it. But it is that good.

76-85: This is a tasty tea and I will have many cups and share with friends, but won’t go out of my way to keep it stocked.

50-75: It was alright! It was… alright! Not horrible, but I might not re-steep.

25-50: Ew. But I will finish the cup.

1-25: Please no, I want to dump it.

The Steepster community is my safe place. Thank you to all my tea friends!
