1040 Tasting Notes

Thanks Sil for sending me a sample of this one.

I’m not sure I’ve had an aged oolong before. I’m not sure what in the notes I’m getting would be typical of an aged oolong.
This is a nice, dark, heavily roasted – almost charcoal tasting oolong. I like oolongs in this style, and this is a pretty good example of that. It might be just a hint too smoky/charcoal for me, but all in all I’ve enjoying drinking three steeps of this.

drank Apple Pie by The Tea Centre
1040 tasting notes

Thanks Sil for sending me this sample.

It’s just ok for me. It’s caramel, it’s apple – not sure it’s apple pie. It’s a bit finicky. Little bit bitter. Happy to have tried it, bot rushing out to add it as a staple.

Sil

Thats good cause it’s from down under haha

drank Boost by Kusmi Tea
1040 tasting notes

I am soooooo tired, and can’t seem to find the time for a nap.

This tea is called boost, I could really use one. Not sure I feel any better, but I really like how this tastes. It’s gently spiced, just hint of mate, and not really any green.
I would drink this again, it’s a bit medicinal, but not really in a bad way. I like it. Thanks VariaTEA for sending me this sample.

Sil

too busy to log teas and nap! how awful ;)

I had a cup of this last night and another tonight. Thanks VariaTEA for sending me this sample.
Decent green tea base, it’s a bit grassy/vegital but not bitter. I’m getting some nutty/sweet but wouldn’t specifically say almond.
I would drink this again if I ran into some, but not sure I would go out of my way to restock.

Nxtdoor

Find the Almond Biscotti I know you ordered from Della Terra. It is so good! And all nutty. Nuts :)

VariaTEA

My thoughts exactly when it came to this tea. I found the cup pleasant enough but I won’t be buying anymore. In fact, I am trying to swap out some of it given I had to buy 75 g.

Was reading Cavocorax note and all the comments about this one. Based on her comments I had to try it. Went rummaging through my huge pile of BF teas that I haven’t put away yet, and pulled it out.

Hazelnut/chocolate/coffee – I’m not getting tea, not much if any coconut. It’s just a little thin mouth feel, but WOW is it good!!!
You have to like coffee to like this, this is hazelnut coffee. Awesome.
This will likely find a permanent place in my cupboard.

Edit OMG – I dumped the last half of the cup over ice – cooled it off. WOW Iced coffee. This is FANTASTIC cold. It’s like hazelnut Kahlua in iced coffee.

TeaLady441

Ok good – I’m happy I didn’t exaggerate how good it was too much!

VariaTEA

Between you and Cavocorax, I am definitely glad this made it into the approved pile to take to Florida

Dexter

…try it cold. :))

VariaTEA

Luckily the Herbal Infusions sampler size is quite large so I will probably be able to try it both hot and cold at least a couple of times.

Plunkybug

Mmmmmm, hazelnut chocolate coffee? Where do I sign up?

caile

Wow – sounds really different and good.

BrewTEAlly Sweet

Hazelnut coffee is my absolute favorite! You both are making my mouth water! Stop it!

Plunkybug

Hazelnut latte with soy is my fave…for coffee.

Herbal Infusions Tea Co.

Haha that was my little secret- pouring it over ice! I was perfecting this blend at the tail end of the summer, and ended up making an iced latte. Almost lost my mind. The other thing I created with this one is a ridiculously addictive slushie. Steep the tea nice and strong, combine in a blender with some coconut milk (Silk is a great brand), a splash of honey or another liquid sweetener, and lots of ice. Pulse. Scoop out into a tall glass and enjoy. SOOOO GOOD!

interesting fact: I worked for years in corporate finance surrounded by coffee freaks. I love the smell of coffee, but can’t stomach it. So this was my solution to bringing a fancy mocha style tea into my life :)

Dexter

I make iced coffee like that – totally works, and this tea would as well. I’ve done it with chai too. :))

drank Christmas (Rois Mages) by Kusmi Tea
1040 tasting notes

Thanks VariaTEA for sending this my way.
I’ll be honest I don’t like names such as Christmas – that doesn’t tell me anything. What is this suppose to be? The only flavor that I can pick out is citrus. There is more going on but I think it’s all muddled together.
Read the ingredient list here, and almond? Nope, can’t pick that out. Vanilla? Nope can’t find that either. Christmas cake? Ewwwww I hate Christmas Cake, glad I didn’t read that first. Not getting cake either.
This is a sweet, citrus dessert tea. I don’t hate it, I don’t love it – it’s strange to me. Thanks VarieTEA for sending me this sample.

VariaTEA

Haha well I guess I don’t hate it is better than you struggling to get through the cup. Now you know to never pick this one up if you were ever curious :)

Dexter

Exactly every tea is a learning experience. Always happy to try them.

drank Spicy Chocolate by Kusmi Tea
1040 tasting notes

This is more chocolate than spice, at least to my tastes. In my world that’s a good thing. Not my favorite chocolate tea, but it’s pretty good.
Thanks VariaTEA for sending me this sample.

VariaTEA

I’m glad you enjoyed this :)

drank Cleopatra's Chai by CaesarsTea
1040 tasting notes

I was really hesitant to try this, but if VariaTEA is generous enough to send it to me, I should at least give it a shot.
Yeah, I know – I’m the queen of chai – have TONS in my house – but the ingredient list doesn’t read like chai to me. (I also really don’t like licorice – this says both star anise and licorice.) Oh well here goes nothing….
This is too strange, there are too many conflicting flavors – and I don’t think chai is any of them. Fruity pu’erh with licorice (not strong – more subtle star anise). Weird, I think pu’erh adds nice depth and undertones to chocolate flavors, and to things like Davids Coffee Pu’erh – but this pu’erh is fighting the fruit for attention – then I just can’t get past the licorice.
Sorry VariaTEA – really liked the coconut chai, really don’t like this one. I’m not going to rate it re me not liking licorice, but this gets abotu 25… Will take the deodorant white over this any day.. :))

VariaTEA

haha I actually haven’t even tried this one yet. I really should try things before I send them to people. I also am not a fan of licorice so I probably should have checked ingredients before buying it. It just smelled good to me and came recommended by the saleswoman. Oh well, nothing I can do about that now. I am sorry it was such a miss. If I ever send something you don’t want to try, feel free to pass it along.

Dexter

No it’s fine, sometimes you have to try things outside your comfort zone – that’s the fun thing about swapping. This might say licorice, but that doesn’t mean it tastes licorice. You don’t know until you try. :))

VariaTEA

Well I own it so I will probably give it a try sometime in the future. I keep getting distracted by swaps and teas that I can easily sipdown.

drank Emperor's Pomegranate by CaesarsTea
1040 tasting notes

This is MUCH better!! I like this so much more than the fruity white last night. Thanks VarieTEA for the chance to taste this one.
It’s a really nice fruit white tea. Nice subtle white that is present but in the background. Sweet poegranate, just a touch of tart. Well balanced. I don’t have anything negative to say. I like it.
I’ve done well so far with the CaesarsTeas that VariaTEA sent me. Need to make a mental not for next BF…

VariaTEA

Yay! They have been pretty good teas for the most part. Few have truly blown me a way but most of them are ones I could see craving every now and again. I am definitely glad you enjoyed this one more. I tend to agree with you, this is much better than the Passion Fruit White tea from Kusmi (probably why that one is up for swap and this is snuggly in my cupboard)

Also, I don’t think they have a BF deal but they are relatively cheap in general and I know in store if you buy 4, you get one free so if you are ever in a pinch I can run in and pick things up for you.

Dexter

LOL I was more thinking NOT ALLOWED to buy tea until next BF – but I’ll keep the offer in mind IF I’m ever allowed to buy tea again.
I liked this way better than the Passion Fruit from Kusmi.

drank Passion Fruit by Kusmi Tea
1040 tasting notes

I was actually drinking this last night. Thanks VariaTEA for sending me this sample.
It was ok. It’s a fruity white, I’m into that. I don’t think I liked the white base thought. Not quite sure what it was, not really bitter, just strong (that’s a strange word for a white tea). Not sure what it was. I’ve had better fruit white teas.
Thanks VariaTEA – always enjoy trying new teas and I didn’t hate it as bad as you did. :))

VariaTEA

This is going to sound really weird but the white base was almost like deoderant. As in the chemically dry alcohol taste of gel deoderant.

Dexter

LOL deodorant? That’s a new one, I’ve heard soapy and chemical but not deodorant.
That’s not quite what I would say, but yes – didn’t really like the white base..

MissB

Ew… :)

ifjuly

yeah wow, that does not make me want to try this VariaTEA! haha.

VariaTEA

haha well if you ever change your mind, there is about 60 g I am looking to get rid of. It smelled so good too but it was just bad.

Roswell Strange

I’m a tad hesitant to try it now ;P

VariaTEA

I think I sneak some into every package I send in hopes of (a) finding someone who likes it and (b) slowly widdling down my stash of it.

Dexter

LOL it’s not THAT bad – 60 might have been a hair generous, but I’ve drank MUCH MUCH worse.
Don’t be afraid Roswell, you’ll be ok – don’t overleaf and don’t oversteep – that’s the best advice I have.

Bio

C.S. Lewis – “You can never get a cup of tea large enough or a book long enough to suit me.”

I needed to update my profile. I joined Steepster 03Mar13. I am just amazed at how much my tastes have changed since then.
When I discovered loose leaf tea about a year and half ago, I didn’t know anything other than my local Davids and Teavana/Teaopia. Stumbling onto Steepster CHANGED EVERYTHING.
Hello, my name is Dex I’m a tea addict.
I’ve been through the “I need to try every single tea out there” phase. I really hope the worst of that has passed. I’ve learned enough to know that I only need to try HALF of all the teas out there. LOL
When I started this journey, I was all about the flavored rooibos and fruity tisanes. Don’t get me wrong there is still room for dessert (chocolate/caramel/nutty) Rooibos teas in my cupboard and I still do enjoy them, BUT I am quickly learning to appreciate the some of the straight teas of the world.
Big bold (but not icky)pu’erh is suddenly my favorite, followed by woody/roasted oolongs. I’m just starting to explore straight black teas, and have found some that I really like.
Generally speaking I’m not into greens at all, only like the occasional green oolong, and white teas are just too mild for my tastes (unless they are fruit flavored). I still enjoy really good fruit tisanes, but am now cold steeping them.
I don’t like floral/herbal blends, and mint anything is not on my preferred list.
I am still exploring new teas, adapting to my changing tastes, understanding more every day how little I really know about tea. Ultimately I would love to find approximately 50 teas that I just “can’t live without” and always have them in my cupboard. That might not be practical, but that what I’m searching for. It’s going to be a fun journey.

All in all, I love this site. I’ve met some wonderful people, and have gotten to try some amazing teas because of them. It really restores your faith in humanity when you get a note saying “oh by the way I sent you some tea”. Wonderful, generous, people here.
