Tea 15 Great Canadian Traveling Tea box

I’m a little surprised at how much I like this one. I’m not sure Merlot is exactly correct, but it is sweet and grapey with a hint of black tea. This is really interesting, but a little strange. I think this would be one that would grow on you. I’ve put the rest back in the box, but enjoyed the couple of cups that I had.

Tea #14 Great Canadian Traveling Tea Box

I really wanted to try this tea based on Steepster reputation.
I don’t get it. This is just sweet vanilla black tea. I got no pineapple at all. Without pineapple it can’t be pineapple upside down cake.
Really disappointed. :((

Fjellrev

I agree that it severely lacks pineapple. Like David’s Red Velvet Cake, but a fraction better.

ifjuly

I remember liking it but yeah, noting that the name has zero to do with what it tastes like, ha.

JustJames

i had to dump about 4 tbsp of brown sugar to get it…. but then i felt like i had to shave my tongue ;-P

Sil

I like this one, but not because it’s “pineapple” i just like the cakiness of it.

ifjuly

yeah, exactly

Dexter

But….. but….. I don’t care if it tastes cakey. I want pineapple, and caramelized sugar.

ifjuly

dunno how you feel about green teas but if you want pineapple flavor i recommend den’s tea pineapple sencha. it even has the juicy, tingly mouthfeel of real pineapple, yum.

ifjuly

that’s uncooked pineapple flavor though, granted.

Tea # 13 Great Canadian Traveling Tea Box

I’ve had other bacon teas from 52teas/Man Teas.
Can’t do this one. Offensively smoky, offensively salty.
Can’t drink it. I really liked the maple bacon, but this is just wrong.

Tea #12 Great Canadian Traveling Tea Box

Yummmmmm. I’m hit or miss with ginger teas. Some I find are just OVERPOWERING ginger, to the point you can’t taste anything else. This one isn’t like that. It’s a nice balance of ginger and cinnamon, there is a little bit of bakery ish ness in the back. I don’t really taste the green tea in it, but it also doesn’t interfere with the other flavors. All in all this pretty much delivers what it promises to.

Tea #11 Great Canadian Traveling Tea Box

Hmmmmmm, what to say. Finicky is the word I want to use. Oversteep and it’s bitter, understeep and it doesn’t taste like anything. I haven’t found the perfect time yet. I’m not really a fan of teas that are this particular. There has to be some room for user error.
I get acai, blueberry, and white as promised – this could be really good if it would just steep properly. Will try again another day, but for right now – I don’t like it.

This is the biggest surprise from the box so far. I love this. Delicate white tea with natural raspberry flavor. Fantastic. There is something in the back that I would say is wine ish. I don’t have much more to say other than, sorry this is staying with me.

KittyLovesTea

I agree this tea was a nice surprise. :)

Tea #9 Great Canadian Traveling Tea Box

This is the last sample from Handmade Tea in the box. Again, I just made a cup of it and will leave the rest.
This is really nice. It has nice apricot flavors, delicate green tea base – there is no bitterness, really nice and sweet. Where are the hops? Dunno, not even sure I know what hops are suppose to taste like, but I thought they were the bitter part of beer. I don’t have anything like that in here. Having said that, I could/would drink this. Nice apricot green tea.

Tea #8 Great Canadian Traveling Tea Box

I’m confused (I know, that’s not unusual for me). I was expecting this to be pu’erh. Is it suppose to be pu’erh? It doesn’t smell like it, it doesn’t taste like it. To me this is a mild black tea. There is a hint of maltiness, a hint of cocoa, but not bold enough for me. I used one brick to 8 oz of water, and have done 4 steeps of it. The second steep was the best.
It’s ok, but nothing special in a black. If it’s suppose to be a pu’erh total disaster. I’m just going to not dwell on it and move on. It would hurt my poor head too much to try and understand.
Edit: As per Kittyloves Tea’s comment. I’ve rated this as if it were a black. Makes me feel better that this is suppose to be a black tea. Taste buds didn’t fail me this time. I didn’t think it tasted pu’erh. I was underwhelmed with it as a black tea. Nothing really wrong, just not bold enough for my tastes.

KittyLovesTea

This is a black tea that has been compressed. I don’t mean to pimp myself out or anything but I did a blog entry on this a while ago with information on it’s origin and information etc. http://www.kittylovestea.co.uk/2013/03/17/the-gift-of-feng-qing/

Tea #7 Great Canadian Traveling Tea Box

I don’t mind this, it’s a decent fruit/vanilla black tea. I wish the base tea wasn’t Ceylon (now that I’ve learned about the different styles of black, I can say that). It’s a little bit too sharp, or astringent for me. This description says pomegranate, I think it’s more cherry ish. The vanilla is really subtle, doesn’t come out much until the tea cools.
There is quite a bit of this in the TTB, I’m going to play with steep times and see if I can get it to my liking. All in all not bad, would be up to trying Monk’s Blend from other companies.
Reserving rating until I’ve played with it.

Sil

Monks blend usually has grenadine flavouring in it….which makes me annoyed because it generally ruins the vanilla black part. Of the tea I like haha. I have some vanilla sky from steep city I can send youto try – basically it’s their version of monks blend

drank Kiwifruit Cocoanut by Handmade Tea

Tea #6 Great Canadian Traveling Tea Box

Interesting, I don’t like this one as much as the lemon mint from earlier. What’s up with that. I’m not getting much kiwi, and hardly any coconut. This – to me – just tastes like a generic fruit black tea. If I didn’t know it was kiwi, I’m not sure that’s what I would have said it was. I’m getting a little bit of creamy, that could be from the coconut, but it’s barely there. In contrast the earlier tea that was light and bright with the specific flavors, this one seems heavier with muted flavors.
Glad to have had the opportunity to try it, not sure if that changes my interest in the company. Still have one more to try, will not give up on them.

Caleb Brown

Sorry you didn’t love it, but happy to hear you’re not giving up just yet :)

C.S. Lewis – “You can never get a cup of tea large enough or a book long enough to suit me.”

I needed to update my profile. I joined Steepster 03Mar13. I am just amazed at how much my tastes have changed since then.
When I discovered loose leaf tea about a year and half ago, I didn’t know anything other than my local Davids and Teavana/Teaopia. Stumbling onto Steepster CHANGED EVERYTHING.
Hello, my name is Dex I’m a tea addict.
I’ve been through the “I need to try every single tea out there” phase. I really hope the worst of that has passed. I’ve learned enough to know that I only need to try HALF of all the teas out there. LOL
When I started this journey, I was all about the flavored rooibos and fruity tisanes. Don’t get me wrong there is still room for dessert (chocolate/caramel/nutty) Rooibos teas in my cupboard and I still do enjoy them, BUT I am quickly learning to appreciate the some of the straight teas of the world.
Big bold (but not icky)pu’erh is suddenly my favorite, followed by woody/roasted oolongs. I’m just starting to explore straight black teas, and have found some that I really like.
Generally speaking I’m not into greens at all, only like the occasional green oolong, and white teas are just too mild for my tastes (unless they are fruit flavored). I still enjoy really good fruit tisanes, but am now cold steeping them.
I don’t like floral/herbal blends, and mint anything is not on my preferred list.
I am still exploring new teas, adapting to my changing tastes, understanding more every day how little I really know about tea. Ultimately I would love to find approximately 50 teas that I just “can’t live without” and always have them in my cupboard. That might not be practical, but that what I’m searching for. It’s going to be a fun journey.

All in all, I love this site. I’ve met some wonderful people, and have gotten to try some amazing teas because of them. It really restores your faith in humanity when you get a note saying “oh by the way I sent you some tea”. Wonderful, generous, people here.
