606 Tasting Notes
Why is it that I get the best cup only when I am nearing the bottom of this tin?! It always had a bothersome tanginess too it that I had to mellow out with cream and sugar. This time I steeped it at 200F for 1.5 minutes and it was so much smoother! I still added a little sugar, but it was more to round out the sweetness of the cherry. I’m still getting a little bit of tart (this is supposed to be a sour cherry tea, right?) but it doesn’t dominate the cup. My tongue is a little dry after each sip.
I’m begining to think that Lupicia doesn’t know how to steep it’s own teas! All the greens say to use boiling water and the steeping times end up being way too long! I get much better cups when I use cooler water and shorter steeps.
Update: I left my cup out all night and came back to it this morning slightly chilled and wow! This would make a great iced tea!
I’m sipping this tea thinking of my upcoming travel plans to Hawaii! I’m SO going to stop by the Lupicia store in Honolulu and check out their other Hawaii only blends! It is one of the things I’m really looking forward to. Ooooo, and the chocolate coconut covered macadamia nuts! And the poke. And the fresh fruit. And swimming. And seeing lava on a live volcano. Okay, there are a lot of things I’m looking forward to!
This tea is nice and tasty. I’m getting a light “Lupicia black” base. It is that creamy starchy base that I have tasted in teas like Cookie and Sweet Potato Pie. There is chocolate on top of that, but I’m having a hard time picking out the macadamia nut. They are such a creamy fatty decadent yet mild tasting nut. I don’t think I have ever had them in a tea before, so it is a little more difficult to identify. It is a little bland without sugar, but perks up a bit with the addition. I was finding this tea pretty smooth until I got the the cooler bottom of the cup where I found a little bit of astringency. The second steeping is pretty good too. A little less chocolaty than the first which may be letting the macadamia out a little more especially in the aftertaste. Either way, this is a nice cup!
Very citrusy. Tastes a little unbalanced like it is all high notes and sharper flavors, which is unusual for MF teas. There is an odd sensation on my tongue when I drink it, almost metallic. The aftertaste is nice and floral fruity. Nah, I don’t like it. I’ll stick with MF’s French Breakfast!
I have been doing tasting flights of tea this morning to get through all the samples I have. This is the first tea (out of maybe 10) that I have enjoyed. It has a nice popped rice and caramel flavor to it while still staying smooth. I am enjoying it without any additives, but I think cream and sugar may make it more decadent. And I was wrong. About the sugar at least. I’m finding sugar takes away from some of the flavors here! I said in my previous review that I didn’t think I’d buy a tin of this and I think that may still hold true, but I wouldn’t be opposed to buying a smaller amount to feel it out some more.
I’m really not a huge David’s fan. I think I like their accessories more than their tea. This definitely has a melon taste to it. Green rooibos is much less obnoxious than red, so I approve on that choice although I’m still getting dry mouth. Adding sugar makes it taste a lot juicier. It is okay, but failing to impress. I fear that fantastic tea may be jading me to average tea!
If all I had to choose from was ROT, this wouldn’t be a bad one to pick. They managed to do a fruit tea without the hibiscus and the sage is an interesting idea to pair with berries. There is a slight bitterness on the back of my tongue. I can taste the blackberry but have a hard time picking out the sage. Good idea, but poor execution.
I cold brewed some of this and I think it is better than having it hot. Unfortunately it doesn’t drastically improve it. I’m still getting that mineral undertone taste and I don’t think it was the water this time. Still getting generic fruit flavors. A little floral.
It is going in the get rid of pile. I don’t have time for mediocre tea!
Smells good in the bag. Steeped it seems a little weak. Adding sugar helps. I can pick out a creaminess, some chocolate… it’s okay, but I might pass on this bag to someone else. What I don’t like is the ring of red around my mug from the sprinkles. I know it is kind of novel to have flashy color in your tea, but I’m a bit of a party pooper and would prefer to not have artificial colors in my tea.
