1711 Tasting Notes
AJRimmer Advent Day 19
This tea steeps up such a pretty color! It’s that deep purple/blue. I took a few sips where the pea flavor was pretty prominent. I could taste that there were more flavors, but wasn’t able to pick them out well. In my excitement of experiencing the magic side of this butterfly, I got a little carried away while gleefully pouring lemon juice into my cup to watch the tea turn into a light magenta color. When I was done I had basically turned my cup of tea into lemonade without the sugar and all other flavors were obliterated. I’ll have to resist that temptation next time and focus on enjoying the tea as is!

This had a nice almond flavor to it. I happily drank the whole cup while chatting with some neighbors tonight. The rooibos seemed either pretty mellow or to blend into the almond enough that it wasn’t distracting. I also didn’t notice the rooibos dry mouth feel.

The wrapper for this is amusing. It has in all caps “CONTAINS LICORICE” or however you spell licorice in Australia. Liquorice? It’s a minty licorice blend. It could be any one of a ton of minty licorice blends and doesn’t stand out in the crowd. It’s a nice cup, but it doesn’t have anything that sets it apart.

No! Bad hibiscus, bad! The very start of the sip is okay, but it quickly goes to a weird metallic taste that feels like I’m eating turkey. Anyone know what I’m talking about when I say that? The cranberry doesn’t help with the turkey association. Gah!
Advent Day 19
What is this?! A “like” and a “tweet” button on this tea profile page?! This is new. I even reloaded the page to make sure it wasn’t a glitch. They kind of overlap each other in a strange way. Anyways… tea!
Breakfasty? Check. Cinnamon? Check. It’s kind of pastry like in the finish, not quite yeasty, but some breadiness is in there. The cinnamon is really light and there is a bitterness on the sides of my tongue at the back of the sip. The finish is kind of cinnamon/ashy/bready. As it fades I’m left with light bitter again that makes me want to wash my mouth out with the nearest thing, which is this tea, which starts the cycle again. I don’t think the flavors would hold up to cream. They are subtle and… well… boring. This is a big fat nope.
Preparation
I don’t know when the “like” and “tweet” were added, but they’ve definitely been there at least since I came back to Steepster a couple of months ago.
Just opened the last bag of this that I bought when it went on sale maybe… 7 years ago, which puts it in the running for the oldest tea in my cupboard! It still holds it’s own! The dry tea still smells really strong as does the steeped tea. The taste is still really strong too! It is way more black currant than bergamot. I’m actually having a bit of a hard time finding the berg, so maybe that part faded. The black currant alone is pretty tasty tho. It is strong, yet aromatic in an almost perfume like way where it lacks body to ground it, but not in an unpleasant way. I should really work on sipping this down and not tempt time any further in ruining a good tea.

Advent Day 18
This is strange. I get that it is trying to be buttery, but there is an intermittent distracting ashy taste. The sip is light and caramel like, but it goes flat at the back and has a dead cardboard finish. I have to really focus to taste chocolate and it’s just the high notes of chocolate without any depth or richness. Not my thing.

I haven’t tried this one before! It does smell very butterscotchy. I steeped it and then walked away until my cup had cooled. There is a slight tang and astringency at the start of the sip. That changes into an almost bread like flavor and then the finish is all buttery with hints of caramel. I kinda want to try this hot with a sweetener!
This tea was accompanied by a note that mentioned a very dedicated process of creating a homemade butterbeer beverage that made me smile. Now I kind of want to go looking for butter pecan ice cream and try it!
Preparation
Advent Day 17
Oooooooooooo, this smells good! The first few sips I took seemed really light on the flavor but it seemed to develop a bit over time. It smells very much like banana bread. The sip is lighter than the finish and a little more bready. The banana flavor really comes out in the finish and lingers with a nuttiness appearing at the end of the sip. I can imagine cream or sugar changing this and bringing the banana out earlier. I do like that this is an herbal option, but I’d love to see these flavors on a bready malty black base too.
I’m not a huge fan of lemon teas, so despite having tried tons of butterfly pea flower blends, I’ve never actually made the magic happen because I didn’t want to have to drink the results :P
I actually like straight-up Butterfly Pea Flower brewed in hot water (not blended with anything… we’ve already established I have the weirdest tastebuds on Steepster), and then I add just one teaspoon lemon juice and one teaspoon honey, not for any “effects” but because I like the flavor that way.
The special effects are SO cool! Maybe I should have tried some honey.
haha lemonade but also, great video. :D
