1711 Tasting Notes

In some sips this tea tastes pretty good and in other sips it tastes like play-doh. :/ I can’t quite sort how I feel about it. I do get bits of apple in there and the overall pistachioness of it. I’m not thrilled and I’m not appalled.

I was That Kid who ate play-doh, so I’d probably like this, haha.

Dustin

I recall play-doh not tasting so bad when I was a kid, but my tastes have changed a little since then. ;)

Nattie

True! My favourite breakfast as a child was marmite and smarties on toast! I tried it again a couple of years back, and it is totally gross, as you would expect!

Kittenna

I only liked the homemade playdough, aka flour + salt. I also licked salty rocks. Yuck. But I know of this play-doh flavour you speak of, and I find it not uncommon, especially in flavoured whites. Not particularly appealing.

I kinda really like this. Being a rooibos based tisane, I didn’t expect to like it as much as I do. It has a nice ginger zing to it that overpowers any rooibos taste and leaves a fun ginger tingle in the finish. Doesn’t leave my mouth exceptionally dry either, which is a trait I find in many rooibos blends. If it weren’t for the huge shipping fee, I’d consider keeping this one in stock because it’s been a nice flavorful cup to reach for in the evenings. Guess that puts this in the melancholy sipdown category.

drank Christmas Tea by Fortnum & Mason
1711 tasting notes

I get what they were going for here. The clove and orange is very reminiscent of wine mulled for the holiday with a little bit of cinnamon to round out the edges. That part is all fine, but the hibiscus is notched up several levels too many. I get that it adds a tartness which rounds out the flavors of many fruit, but in moderation. Each sip starts off well enough with a warming flavor, then as it reaches the back of my tongue the hib dominates the sip and from the end of the sip to the finish is an alkaline taste that grows to an ashy flavor that lingers. From the moment the tea bag hit the water and the clear bloomed to pink, I feared this tea may be a loss. It feels like there is a lot of potential, but a lot to work on here. Until then… NOPE.

drank Masala Chai by Zhi Tea
1711 tasting notes

One of my favorites! This tea is so yummy and warming. The spices all melt so perfectly into each other that it’s hard to pick them out individually. A little honey and some creamer make this into a rich dessert like cup. Only down side to this tea is it gives it it’s all in the first steeping, leaving no magic for a second steep, but I’m okay with that. <3

Also, achievement unlocked: 1000th tasting note!

Congrats on your 1k!

I kind of wish we had little badges on here like on some other forum sites. Haha. And congrats :)

drank Breakfast Earl Grey by Lupicia
1711 tasting notes

I love this tea! Such a bright crisp flavorful EG that is perfect with a little creamer. I have tried one of Lupicia’s other EGs and it wasn’t nearly as good. I’m wondering if the torn leaves in this create more surface area for the bergamot flavoring. I don’t recall if I bought one or two bags of this the last time I was in a Lupicia store, but with the downsizing and near extinction of the US branch of the company, I really hope I bought two.
*This is my 999th tasting note! What do I choose for 1000?! Has to be something epic. Oh, the agony of choosing the right tea for the occasion!

You could always use the steepster cupboard roulette!

mrmopar

Hard choice to make!

Dustin

Cupboard roulette?! That sounds fun, but also sounds like something I need to have my Steepster cupboard up to date for… which it is not.

Kittenna

Hahaha, might be more frustrating than anything if that’s the case! (Same problem over here.)

Dustin

Someday…. At least that’s the dream, to have a manageable tracked cupboard!

drank My Morning Mate by Teavana
1711 tasting notes

I’ve had this tea FOREVER!!! It’s been in my cupboard for years and I suppose I’ve been holding onto it for nostalgia, but no more! I have been working hard at sipping this down the past several days. I still have a little ways to go. After being several years old, it still has a good amount of flavor. It is a little lighter than I recall, but that is to be expected. Adding cream has given it a depth that it lacked. I can pick out the coffee undertones, the mate, a hint of orange and a touch of chocolate. It’s still a good cup, but I’m finally at a point where I can let go… after a few more cups.

Good to know as I have this as well and been avoiding drinking it. I really liked it. It’s just super old!!

drank Fireside Mocha by DAVIDsTEA
1711 tasting notes

Wow, dessert tea! This has a nice coffee/tiramisu flavor to it, especially when I add a little creamer. Reminds me slightly of a Teavana Tiramisu tea I loved. I’m not really getting apple in here, although I saw plenty of it in the steeping basket. I could do without the sprinkles. I’m assuming based on the sprinkles being trees that this is seasonal and I hope it comes back again so I can stock up.

drank Vanilla Rose by Zhi Tea
1711 tasting notes

I’ve had this sample for a while now and it still hasn’t grown on me. What are the tv watching people saying these days? “Does it spark joy?” The answer for this tea is it does not. It has a decent base and isn’t bitter, there is some smooth rose flavor in there, but it just doesn’t excite me.

Heh, I think I heard that in the background on the tv yesterday. I wasn’t paying attention… some lady in San Francisco runs a business helping people get rid of stuff?

Kittenna

Ahaha. It would be interesting to KonMari one’s tea cupboard! I feel like that’s the objective we all try to have with swapping, etc., but it’s hard to do…

Dustin

I’ve never watched the show, only heard people talking about it. Didn’t know the show was based in SF! There have been several teas that had to grow on me over time, which is why I’m reluctant to dismiss some teas after one cup. Overall I feel like I’m getting better at writing a tea off and tossing it in my get rid of pile.

Fighting off getting sick and loosing. I was hoping this tea could help burn out any germs with chili, but all I’m getting is a yummy chocolate chai. It’s good (one of the better B&B teas IMO), but not exactly what I was hoping for.

It is really going around. I just spoke someone who was sick last month and he got it again (he’s a pilot so he’s around people a lot). Ugh :( Feel better soon.

mrmopar

Feel better soon!

Dustin

Thanks y’all! I’m feeling better now, but still only about 85%. :( More tea will fix this, right?

drank Candy Cane Crush by DAVIDsTEA
1711 tasting notes

There is a whole lot of candy in this tea, which makes me feel a little uneasy about it. Is it really just candy canes crushed up and put on some tea? It tastes pretty good tho. The top of my tea is a little oily which is weird. It’s strange to have hot tea with a cooling sensation! The flavors are pretty well balanced, nothing strange in the finish. I would like to have a tea like this as a staple in my cupboard that doesn’t have a bunch of added sugar. Until then, I’ll enjoy this sample.

I quite like the Candy Cane green rooibos from Simpson & Vail. It does have stevia in it, but I’m fairly sensitive to sweeteners and it’s not too much for me. Plus, it’s not really a candy cane tea without some sweetness! ;)

Dustin

I haven’t tried that one! I have a mostly hate relationship with stevia. Someone here suggested a particular source of stevia that didn’t bother them and that one is okay in moderation for me.
You are right about the sweetness with candy cane. It was a fun tea to try.

Profile

Bio

My name is Dustin and I like tea.

I’m an added flavor kind of tea fan, but have had a growing appreciation for plain. I want my tea to remind me of cookies and cakes with coconut and almond slices with a hint of chocolate drizzled on top. I want dancing ponies and flying monkeys shooting off fireworks! And no hibiscus. Hibiscus is the devil.
