190 Tasting Notes

Green Spiral from Utopian Tea
94

What an interesting green tea, it’s like none i’ve ever had. The liquor is thicker than usual, and the color is darker as well. It doesn’t taste vegetal,or grassy at all, but instead has an earthy aspect, that reminds me of some black teas maybe? I can’t place the taste, but it is really full and very flavorful. Unfortunately, I have very little of this tea left!

Happy New Year - Bai Mu Dan from Andrews & Dunham Damn Fine Tea
85

absolutely delicious tea. it is mild, but it is very refreshing. This tea is smooth, slightly floral, slightly sweet in the back of my palate and even a tiny bit vegetal, too. This is a great tea to sip on on rainy mornings like today when it is hard to get started.

Zairai Estate Japanese Aoyagi Kamairi Cha from Chicago Tea Garden
94

very light tea, vegetal tones mixed with some nice citrus flavors. sadly, i’m almost out of this tea :(

Dong Ding from Naivetea

The tea turns out to be a beautiful, striking golden yellow liquor. The first flavors in the tea I taste is a lightly roast quality. I also taste some nice sweet, toasted notes, which remind me a lot of a genmaicha’s sweet/ toasted notes. The combination of both of these flavors is very pleasing to my palate. The tea is light and smooth in my mouth, and is not excessively heavy at all in my mouth. The tea rolls into my mouth and smoothly around my palate, which I like.

Zealong Pure from Chicago Tea Garden

Madagascar Vanilla from Golden Moon Tea
63

Holy Vanilla! This tea is so potent, and smells like you just stuck your nose into a vanilla bean. The smell alone, makes me want to taste the tea immediately! (i am a vanilla fiend!). Sadly, I was kind of disappointed with this tea, it was vanilla-y on the nose, while the tea was hot, but the vanilla seemed to go away and dissolve as the tea cooled off. The taste of the tea was a mild black tea, not anything to write home about, but I was sipping on it at night after an exam, so the tea helped me relax, but I think i wouldn’t drink the tea if I wanted a boost in the morning/afternoon. The tea reminded me of how vanilla as a flavor is a bit subdued and kind of on the mellow side, which is exactly how this tea strikes me. I would have liked the vanilla to be more present in the tea flavor, and maybe a stronger black tea too.

Sugar Caramel Oolong from Golden Moon Tea
91

I am really behind on logging my teas, but that’s what finals week will do to ya! So, I reviewed this tea on my blog, but man, this is a delicious tea!

The dry leaf of this tea smells amazing. It smells like butterscotch candy, caramel and fresh birthday cake. That smell made me want to taste this tea immediately! The tea liquor was darker than I was expecting, it was a darker golden color, and smelled sweet and roasted with some very prominent burnt sugar overtones. The taste of this tea is much milder than I was expecting, especially with such a powerful caramel overtones in both the dry leaf and the tea liquid. The caramel flavor is strongest upon first sip, when the tea is first entering my mouth, and while I can still smell the caramel streaming up from the cup.

Guayusa and Chocolate Tea from Stash Tea Company
87

After steeping and straining the tea into my cup,, the liquid smells of straw, and earth. The brew itself is very dark, which reminded me of a puerh tea. But the liquor color was more brown and less reddish brown, which is common in puerh teas. The cocoa nibs that are found in the dry tea, have melted into the tea liquor, creating a very chocolate-y aroma paired with the straw/earth aroma.

Organic Pomegranate White Tea from Arbor Teas
78

You really have to see it in person to admire it, but this tea is just beautiful to look at. There are beautiful reddish-orange flower petals mixed with the silvery and white tea needles work well together. The smell of the dry leaf is more candy like than pomegranate, but either way, it smelled sweet, and reminded me of lollipops.

Wen Shan Bao Zhong from Naivetea
93

The first thing that I noticed is that the leaves are much larger than the small hand rolled balls of oolong teas that are popular. The dry leaves are a beautiful deep green color with hints of lighter green. The shape of the tea was twisted and long in length. The dry leaves smell a bit nutty and roasted, and the tea really smells like it has been toasted.

Lapsang Souchong Tea-Infused Chocolate Truffle from Arbor Teas
100

The very last review of the Tea Infused Truffles form Arbor Teas is the one I was most worried about. As, I haven’t been exposed to very much Lapsang Souchong in my tea lifetime and the times I have it was a strange tea. First off, the smell of the truffle itself embodied the tea and chocolate, smelling like a bitter, high percentage of dark chocolate, but also smelling like pipe tobacco and campfire at the same time. The taste is interesting. Upon first taste, the dark chocolate plays nicely with the smoky and toasty flavors from the Lapsang Souchong tea.

Masala Chai Tea-Infused Chocolate Truffle from Arbor Teas
100

I love this truffle. Surprisingly, the Masala Chai Truffle was the lightest of the 6 truffles! This truffle is white on white, and is exquisitely creamy and delicious. The chai flavor is light, which balances very nicely with the lightness of the white chocolate. There is a light spiciness from the chai in the truffle, with subtle flavors of cinnamon, anise, clove and the other traditional flavors associated with chai.

Matcha Tea-Infused Chocolate Truffle from Arbor Teas
92

This chocolate was very creamy. The milk chocolate paired really nicely with the matcha flavor. The Green Tea flavor is not over steeped at all and instead taste milky, creamy and a tiny bit bitter, to remind you it’s there! I taste some light green tea flavors of bitterness and astringency, but the sweetness that can be tasted in matcha is also prominent in the truffle, and pairs really well with the milk chocolate!

Pineapple Passion Tea-Infused Chocolate Truffle from Arbor Teas
90

This truffle smells fruity and dark chocolate-y at the same time. The flavor is very fruity, tastes exactly like pineapple. The resemblance to the sweetness of a pineapple is uncanny. I also taste some green tea notes on the back end of my palate.

Jasmine Tea-Infused Chocolate Truffle from Arbor Teas
92

Upon first bite( more like first nibble! Since I savored these truffles down to the final bite!), the dark chocolate is quite overpowering in the truffle. However,I do taste some light floral notes after the truffle ganache melts on my tongue, which are sweet, soft and remind me of jasmine. The sweetness and floral notes on the jasmine pair well with the dark chocolate, but i would have loved to have the jasmine flavor be a bit more prominent in this truffle. The end notes of the chocolate is where the jasmine comes into play.

Earl Grey Tea-Infused Chocolate Truffles from Arbor Teas
91

This earl grey truffle smells like bergamot and dark chocolate ganache. But, the dark chocolate doesn’t smell as bitter as some dark chocolates, so i think it is a lower percentage of dark chocolate. However, there are lots of dark chocolate flavors, the bergamot flavor almost seems absent and gets lost within the dark chocolate flavor. The citrus is light, and not as overpowering as it smells.

Zealong Dark from Chicago Tea Garden
92

The dry tea of this tea smells like a charcoal grill, with some floral tones mixed in. Honestly, the smell of the leaves can be a little intimidating, but I recommend to go ahead and steep! I started with a 45 second steep and tacked on about 15 extra seconds with each steep. Lets steep the first three cups of Zealong Dark together!

Iron Goddess of Mercy (Ti Kuan Yin) from Utopian Tea
97

i haven’t sipped on this tea in a while, and i am sipping on it in class and remembering why it is up there in my top favorites. such a delicious tea. floral, sweet and smooth.

Top Leaf from Mellow Monk
79

mmm! sipping on this while carving a pumpkin today! It is really delicious tea, that tastes vegetal and buttery smooth. I am almost out of this tea, and will most definitely have to restock after this sample is finished!

Passionfruit Oolong from Naivetea

First impressions of this tea is in the smell. The scent of the dry leaves smells a lot like candy, and smell very sweet. After steeping, the dry leaves and the tea liquor smelled a lot like the Acai Emergen-C vitamin C drink packages. I do not know what Passion fruit smells like, but this tea smelled very sweet, like acai, and had hints of crisp apple and peach in the scent as well.

Organic Makaibari Oolong Tea from Arbor Teas

The dry leaves are pretty, and have some dark green, brown and silver tips visible. The dry leaf has a sweet floral scent, that pairs with a vegetal, more nutty scent that reminds me of peanut butter. The steeped tea smells lightly like nectarines and lemons, but overall has that traditional black tea scent. Upon first sip, this tea is crisp, and delicious.

Organic Makaibari Oolong Tea from Arbor Teas
Organic Chun Mee Green Tea from Arbor Teas
91

First things first: This tea is hand rolled with a slight arch to make it look like eyebrows! How Bizzare and intriguing! The dry leaves do look like very tiny eyebrows…maybe for a mouse, or a chipmunk. The dry leaves smell very sweet and grassy. After steeping, the first thing I noticed was that all the leaves almost completely expanded and unfurled! The unfurled leaves are the tea liquor was a medium amber color and smelled almost cinnamon-like, with hints of fruitiness and a darker scent, that reminded me of fresh-baked cinnamon chocolate chip cookies.

Act Normal from Shui Tea
94

On first smell, this tea embodies a very rich earthiness, both in the dry leaves and in the liquors aroma. First sip..? This tea is bold! I can taste some sweetness, peppery notes and some citrus-y flavors (which may be the tannins of the tea coming out). I really like the boldness of the tea…
