drank Jumpy Monkey by DAVIDsTEA
284 tasting notes

sipdown. I made a cup at work this morning and gave the rest of it (1-2 cups worth) to someone at work as she wanted to try it. I warned her not to get her hopes up.

I don’t care for this one. There’s coffee smell, but it doesn’t taste like coffee. Almost like unroasted coffee beans. And to me it tastes kinda like straw. It’s not awful. If I was on a deserted island and all I had was this tea, hell, I’d drink it. But given all the other choices I send this monkey packing.

I have to say it does not get astringent if you forget about it, and it does not get bitter so … look for the silver lining?

drank Red Velvet Cake by DAVIDsTEA

Dry leaf, this smells of chocolate, or crumbled up cookies, maybe some vanilla. Brewed, it is sweet enough that no sugar is needed but if you add sweetener it could be out of this world delicious. I only added a bit of caramel creamer.

I could do without the sludge tracks it leaves in my steeper and cup but it’s what you get what with the sprinkles and chocolate chips in there. When it comes to chocolate teas, I like Love Tea #7 better but not by much.

If you haven’t tried this yet, try at least a 24 g bag for those nights you want to cozy up with some cocoa or something.

drank Watermelon by Southern Boy Teas

This will be a longer note than I usually write because there are several things I want to go over. First, I am really surprised by this tea. I had tried a few other SBTs and found them lacking in the flavour department, for me. Then, when I had lost all hope, along came this one. I brewed it two days ago and it was still in the fridge, untouched. This morning, I took some to work in a travel mug. I wasn’t getting as much flavour as I wanted so I added a tsp of sugar to my 14 oz travel mug. It is like I’m drinking a different tea, you guys. It is bursting with flavour. The interesting part that I want to bring up is the fact that at home I’m sweetening with agave, NEVER with refined white sugar. Could the choice of sweetener make this much difference??

Also, there is a woman here at work I occasionally give sips of my tea to try. She is used to drinking only straight Chinese black tea because her grandfather drinks that and ever since she was a little girl she shared her grandfather’s tea. I gave her this and she didn’t like it. Yet she loved a subdued in flavour “cheeky lychee”. I have come to the realization she would have loved all the other SBTs that fell short for me, simply because she relishes the subtle flavour, the “finish” more than the blast your mouth stuff.

The moral? These steepster ratings are so subjective.

As for this tea, dude, it is so freaking watermelony delicious I’m in danger of running into the open arms of white sugar!

ashmanra

I use raw cane sugar most of the time, but I have found that the flavor of these SBT blends blossoms like mad if you leave them in the fridge for a couple of days to mellow and meld. In fact, that is how I like all of my flavored iced black teas! Now I have to run over to Frank’s store and order watermelon flavor…

TheTeaFairy

Nooooo! Don’t give in, white sugar bad, BAD FOR YOU!!!! (lol)

drank Hazelnut Honeybush by Fusion Teas

Sipdown! I rarely write three notes for one tea, in fact I rarely write two, but this was so so good. Initially I had a sample and then I bought my own pack. I have just finished it and would gladly order more of it some day, in the not too distant future.

Purposely Overstepped and overleafed, 2.5 perfect measures for 16 oz of water. Didn’t set a timer. Still delicious. Soo forgiving. This is an awesome tea for those introducing themselves to honeybush. Go for it! Especially with cream and the sweetener of your choice it is an awesome beverage. Take it to work with you in the morning because it will take the “crabby” right out of you.

I was going to enter this as a sipdown (yay!) and then realized it wasn’t even in my cupboard. Duh. I don’t think it’s a steepster bug, I probably never added it to begin with. Will not be replenishing this (come to think of it, this was one of their web special sales so they might be discontinuing it anyway)

I started pairing food with tea. We’re cutting down on our wine consumption with dinner — our wine bill was spinning out of control! — but we still feel the need for a drink that’s not water. I figured with mushroom chicken and braised swiss chard a good lemon ginger tea would go swimmingly. My other choice was mint julep but I wanted to finish off this one.

It goes alright with the food cuts through some of the heaviness of the creamy mushroom. I congratulate myself on my amateur first pairing.:)

drank Happy Kombucha by DAVIDsTEA
284 tasting notes

Meandering out and about Toronto`s Queen St. E for the Jazz fest I went into DAVIDs. They were sampling Happy Kombucha. I was there to refill Love Tea #7 and upon trying this I bought 24 g. I don’t know what Kombucha is. I could look it up but I don’t care enough. I like the name. The tea, well, it’s sort of mango oolong. Lots of mango and little other stuff but that works for me. It’s mango madness but oolong instead of white. I have a feeling 24 g is not enough for I like mango in tea.

From what I understand, kombucha is fermented tea. I thought you had to make it as a liquid – ferment sweetened tea. So I am unsure what the Davids Tea blend is. I have never tried either form of kombucha.

Fjellrev

Yeah, it’s fermented. From what I remember, this blend has powdered kombucha in it.

thanks folks!

Kombucha tastes like apple cider vinegar in water to me! LOL!

drank Cotton Candy by Southern Boy Teas
284 tasting notes

I’m really raining on everyone’s parade lately aren’t I? Cover your eyes if you don’t want to read this. I don’t know what cotton candy everyone is eating but I must have been eating a different kind. This tea is not cotton candy for me. Even with a generous amount of agave I’m getting a strong base with something sweet at the back. I’d say it’s a cotton candy finish. I expected stronger cotton candy flavour and less base flavour. It smelled like strong black tea after brewing so was worried before I even tasted it.

The bag ripped when I opened the foil pouch but it was not a big deal, I just dumped it in my DAVIDs steeper and continued as per directions. It was interesting to see the base. The tea is very fine though. Like ground coffee. More like bagged tea than loose leaf tea. I meant to drink it without sugar but it really tasted like nothing to me so it was either suffer, dump it, or sweeten. I chose the latter. We’re going to the Jazz Streetfest and am taking this so I really didn’t want to leave the house with something not enjoyable.

Sadly I think this will be my last SBT adventure. I still have the watermelon one but if tastes like the other four I’ve tried, well, I won’t be in a hurry to brew it. They’re just too subdued for me in the flavour department, that’s all.

I am in total agreement. I haven’t tried the SBT, but the original loose tea, and it was underwhelming. Just black tea vaguely sweetened with sugar. No cotton candy.

JustJames

i agree with you… i smelled the potential, but i got nothing in the steep. i didn’t even review it i don’t think. i like the baked goods, i loved the lime jello…. the rest? =0(

drank Coconut Grove by DAVIDsTEA
284 tasting notes

I don’t like this tea. It tastes exactly like coconut water. I didn’t like Tropicalia either probably because it tastes like piña colada which I don’t like (because of the coconut). The strange thing is I like the Buttered Rum (organic) which has coconut in it, as well as the coconutty SoHo Blend (Harney & Sons) :)

The dry leaf is mostly tea with long strands of coconut throughout. It smells like sweet coconut. The brew is pale yellow (but darkens as it sits for a couple of hours). Flavour: coconut water.

I drank it iced because I couldn’t imagine it hot nor do I have any desire to try it that way.

The tea delivers what it sets out to deliver: an all coconut tea. I just wish I liked it more. It is not astringent at 3 minutes with proper water temperature. I used a heaping “perfect measure” for 8 oz of water. Easy going tea for me, although whites can be picky.

i love coconut, but i despise coconut water. balance! it needs balance!!!

drank Lime Gelato by DAVIDsTEA

Favourite fruit green tea hands down! Drinking it iced and it doesn’t taste like green tea at all to me, it’s just pure lime-onade :) I don’t know abut gelato, but there’s a nice creaminess that to me takes sharpness away and makes it less tangy. Even without sweetener this is not sour at all but plenty lime flavour. There, how’s that for eloquent.

It is really good! Pale green liquor, flavour matches the aroma. May-zing :)

this one is awewsome!

drank Love Tea #7 by DAVIDsTEA

I’m writing this note thanks to Dexter3657. I was lost to all of you forever (big deal, right?) because I couldn’t add comments, notes or anything at all. I freaked out and emailed Dexter who said “clear your cookies”. Once I figured out how to do this on ipad it all worked fine so… I’m back baby!

This tea is amazing. Yes, “amazing” and “DAVIDs” can go together. You can taste the chocolate, berries as well as the rose yet it is so well balanced, none of the three are too much. This is of course the way it tastes to me. I’m not Hemingway, he was the best at describing things, even food, but suffice it to say that if you like chocolate strawberry teas you will enjoy this. It’s not too floral, I worried about the roses too but it’s good.

I steeped it at work, in a bag, and it’s still good. Resteeps well also although the resteep is more chocolate and rose and only a hint of strawberry.

Dry leaf smells mostly of chocolate but there is a whiff of strawberries. The brewed tea is not overly fragrant but there is chocolate on the nose. Caramel coloured liquor. ( The tea bag smelled out of this world afterwards, as it was waiting patiently to be re-steeped.)

2 tsp, 12 oz near boiling water, 4 min.

Profile

Bio

I started drinking loose leaf tea in the spring of 2013 (why do we feel compelled to mark the date of tea drinking somewhat like addicts counting their sobriety days?)

Never been much into tea before. Growing up in Romania, tea was something mom made for you when you were sick. As an adult, my hot beverage of choice has been coffee, both flavoured and regular. I’ve recently stumbled upon Teavana and DAVIDs TEA and quickly got addicted to the latter. Then came steepster and all else followed.

Formerly a mathematician and insurance adjuster, I gave up the corporate world and am now a professional chef. I drink wine and sometimes cheat on it with tea.

I lean heavily towards flavoured black teas. I’ve started to crave the occasional straight oolong and green but so far unflavoured black teas leave me unimpressed.

I’m learning so I drink them all. Am even introducing myself to pu’erh. So far I can do fine with the sheng cause frankly, they don’t taste like pu’erh to me. The shou is another story.

Note*: The virtual cupboard does NOT contain any of the samples I hold since most of them are one-cup quantity.

Note**: My partner, our home improvements, gadgets, mortgage, travel, wine and food have budget priority over tea.
