80 Tasting Notes

Liu Bao 1996 Nong Jia from Camellia Sinensis
92

Color: Dark red
Nose: Earth(spicy and sweet) and leather

I had yet to try a Liu Bao. Both the (huge) leaves and the liquor are red. Despite the fact I steeped it for 6 minutes, I can really still smell the sweetness, which in turn translates into the taste.

What differenciates this one from other puerhs I’ve tried is its only slightly earthy, with lightly sweet feel in mouth which is tied together by spices (could it be leather?). It also has a nutty taste I identify as fresh hazelnuts. Being this light, it’s more refreshing than filling.

Matcha Uji from Camellia Sinensis
94

I tried Uji before I could stick it in the fridge, couldn’t help myself. Also, Camellia Sinensis offered me a generous 40g sample of their Sencha Haruno and I don’t think I can wait to review those shiny emerald leaves.

This matcha has such a vibrant, dark green color. It also has a thick cream, both characteristic of fairly good quality. This is one I’m gonna still put in my smoothies, and feel ridiculous each time.

On to the flavor, this is a matcha that is 50% sweet, 50% bitter. A nice balance and a remarquable sweet pea aroma and smell. If find it is extremely tasty, so you wouldn’t need to use a huge amount of product, either. It’s potent stuff.

David's Darjeeling from DAVIDsTEA
91

I was a huge white Darjeeling fan already, but from time to time I get black Darjeeling samples and enjoy them just the same. There’s something about that woodsy warmth, that sweet aftertaste, that I enjoy so much and that makes Darjeelings great ’’celebration’’ teas.

This one is no exception. It is gorgeous, David. Nice muscat flavor developping. I might stock.

Super Chocolate (organic) from DAVIDsTEA
Matcha from Épices de Cru
93

I’ve been enjoying this matcha for a while, prior to reviewing — in smoothies, iced matcha drinks, matcha lattés… Nothing revolutionary here!
Verdict? It’s quite buttery for a matcha, and quietly bitter.
Also, I found lightly sweetened matcha drinks to be awesome before running. All those electrolytes and carbs? In check ✓. Now just do it.
(Meanwhile in Northern Québec I’m still trying to get the art of whisking down.)

Bamboozled from DAVIDsTEA
95

Had this iced at the store today and it was delicious! I like this one more than Tropicalia. I should of bought a 50g but I went with Creme Caramel Rooibos (which they gave free samples of) instead. I really like the overall bamboo + pineapple combo, it was perfect on a hot day. I’d like DavidsTea to make more bamboo-based tisanes.

Sakura Thé Blanc from Mariage Frères
96

THIS IS DELICIOUS (but lacked in steeping instructions).
Sweet like sugared flowers, or more like flowers made of sugar.

Conversely, the smell reminds me of cherry losanges and I was bummed with the quantity in the tin. But don’t let this put you off from a solid Bai Mu Dan with an addicting flavor.

This is unlike other sakura teas I’ve tasted. In fact, I don’t know what I’m tasting, but it is pleasant. The texture is thick, the taste is fruity. Feel free to correct me if I’m wrong. Me gusta.

Rouge d'Automne from Mariage Frères
86

First of all, this is primarily a black tea. Not a rooibos.
Secondly, well, that was good! I’m not usually a black tea person, I don’t like them, I don’t buy them… I can’t appreciate them for ‘’what they are’’. Failed romance much?

Candied marrons, with a spicy aftertaste, making it automnal, changed my mind. It’s very round, but tolerable. Reminds me of David’s Pumpkin Chai, which is also my sort of thing. Someday I will understand…

Iskandar from Mariage Frères
97

Alexander the great smells like violets.
Sweet, bold, aromatic, flowery.
Fit for a king, great hot or cold.

THÉ DES VOYAGEURS from Mariage Frères
98

50% zesty fruits, 50% quality china green, indeed refreshing. I bought this for the collector tin and to get a break from all the floral Mariage Frères stuff. I might get Iskandar next. I am toying with the idea of making cocktails with those.

What dreams may come (Mugwort) from The Dirty Housewife
91

Could you meet me in your dreams tonight?
I would like to fly with you in Astral Flight
We could pretend we were lovers again
and dance in the pale moonlight….
-Shop owner

I was attracted to mugwort for its medicinal purposes. (Astral projection? Sounds good!)
Anyways, it did deliver the goods. I do feel more relaxed and enhanced when I drink this tea/herb. I can’t speak for everybody but I seem to make very interresting dreams and remember them vividly and in color. If nothing else this is very good to release tension and enhance focus.
The taste of the tea itself is very surprisingly mild and pleasant, sweet and wood-like.

I have a few teabags of this I’m keeping for days I have the blues.

Swan Lake from Mariage Frères
92

Devastatingly floral sencha. I added rose syrup to make it less heady/spicy. It does smell like a garden only an old lady could properly take care of.

Violette from Mariage Frères
94

I’m not really a black tea * shame * fan but this tea’s good on it’s own and has a great violet aroma. Might try it iced. Yeah, I know what you’re thinking.

HAPPY QUEEN from Mariage Frères
99

What a beautiful tin! Well, it does hurt my eyes a little.
I think this one is limited edition, so I’m reviewing this one more for fun than posterity.
The dry smell is ultra-citrusy – but – when brewing you can smell the peonies and fruits alot more. The color of the tea is clear forest green (!).
On to the taste, it’s so sweet (and without tartness), flowery, an fruity. Refreshingly green. Not one bit harsh or bitter. This tea is a miracle. You could just leave it steeping, forever, and it would never turn it’s back on you. It’s a feminine beauty. It’s the happy QUEEN.

Paradise Found from DAVIDsTEA
91

I don’t think I would want to drink this hot, but iced? Very sour and refreshing. You read that right.
All you hisbiscus haters out there obviously have to steer clear. It is indeed very playful and fruity, tropical-but-not, with just a dash of flowery goodness that wasn’t really needed to begin with. But then the hisbiscus takes things to a boil. Goes without saying.

Strawberry Shortcake from DAVIDsTEA
92

I get everything from the cake to the cream, to the strawberries of course. Which is great considering some flavored tea descriptions can be a stretch sometimes.

Note to self: Must nectarify this one and add it to a real strawberry shortcake batter in the near future. Or better, in strawberry jam. Ok I’m done.

Luscious Watermelon from DAVIDsTEA
95

I feel like the whole ‘’people giving this tea thumbs down’’ were probably out of the loop, or hoping for something else??? This is a sweet watermelon tea!
And it is that, fabulous. Iced, of course. Add some fresh mint leaves and ice and you’re set. Agave if you please. Ice pops if you’re adventurous. Alcohol if you’re rabunctious. This is a versatile summer tea for sure. And it kinda excuses the mess eating the real thing does.

Buddha's Blend from DAVIDsTEA
92

Just woke up to the mail man bringing me this after a * long * hiatus of trying new teas.
Me being excited with the ‘’iced tea’’ season what do I do?

First the smell, this tea looks beautiful and I would really keep those flowers around if I worked at David’s Tea. The smell was divine and quite sweet. Think deluxe jasmine.

So I put some ice and agave nectar. Terrific. Very refreshing and sweet. I’m already thinking of making a pitcher of this to bring on the beach…….. ;)

Happy Kombucha from DAVIDsTEA
90

This tastes like a tropical rainbow.
(Yes, that’s all.)

Sweet Love from Kusmi Tea
90

I got this one on Valentine’s day, in sachet form. The only time I reach for sachets is usually when I’m offered tea somewhere or I’m having a bit of nostalgia for myself. Hello, red rose? However this tea is in chunks, not powdered to death.

This is better than I expected. Then again, I like pink peppercorn and I’m a cardamom fan. I wish there was some sort of complimentary rose/lavender flavor in addition to the spices because they went quiet on the peppercorn (shame!) and marketed it as a love tea. Despite that the tea comes off liquoricy, and has a nice added touch with the ginseng.

If you like liquorice, you may fall in love with this for some reason.

Carrot Cake from DAVIDsTEA
88

I tried to work things out between me and carrot cake, so I added half cashew milk and some agave nectar. Much more ressemblant to the actual dessert and I have to say, delicious this time!

Smoky Bacon from Man Teas
94
Carrot Cake from DAVIDsTEA
88

I wanted to like this one so much. It tastes totally chemical and nothing like oolong or carrots. I will try it again in the future but for now it is a let down.
