drank Tender Lovers by Xiu Xian Tea
336 tasting notes

This is a tea I received in a “Secret Santea” exchange over at www.reddit.com/r/teaexchange. I was given this story along with it: "oh another note that black tea called “Tender Lovers” has a story with it that i think makes it even tastier and special :-).
When me and my gf went on vacation last year we visited Washington state and in a strip mall in Renton there is a tea shop names Xiu Xian tea and we stayed at the store for no less than 4 hours talking with the owner all the while tasting at least 10-15 teas and multiple steeping of each.
I asked if she had any rare tea or interesting tea and she pulled out “Tender Lovers” and explained that her family had a wedding a few months ago in china and they had picked and processed this tea specifically for the wedding. She had only 3 pounds of it left and then there would be no more of that specific tea.
I know this story wasn’t bs because the woman was very honest and it wasn’t any more expensive than the other teas so she wasn’t trying to up-sell it. Hell she even had me taste it to be sure and it was “so damn good” as she would say about a lot of her teas.
So when you drink that tea it is a one of a kind!"

I’ve been putting off trying it because it sounds so special, I almost didn’t feel like I deserved to get to try it! I’m glad I do get the chance though. There weren’t any brewing instructions with it, so I went with boiling and three minutes. I always see people mentioning hints of chocolate flavor in straight black teas, but I never really got it. At least until this tea. When I finished steeping it, I picked it up to move it and got a big whiff of creamy, slightly smokey chocolate. It tasted like it smelled, very lovely and smooth, with no bitterness. I’ll play around with steep times and temperatures to see what personality this tea has.

Made this for my 9am class a few days ago, mostly since it was the first thing with caffeine that I saw. I managed to steep it properly this time. I was only partially paying attention to the taste, since most of my attention was focused on epithelial to mesenchymal transition. From what I recall, the chocolate was definitely more of a dark chocolate flavor, and rather subtle. It wasn’t the main flavor. While the orange and chocolate were both there, the tea flavor was still present. If I recall correctly, with DavidsTea’s chocolate orange tea, the flavoring hides most of the puerh flavor. Before I pass any final judgement, a side by side test would be interesting. For now, I’ll still hold of on a rating until I have a better chance to pay attention to the tea.

I have a bag of this that I save for special occasions. Yesterday was a very stressful day. I had a job interview which, fortunately, went well. Unfortunately, that means I’ll be working two jobs now to keep up with school payments. Once I got back from the interview, I had a boatload of school work to get done. Needless to say, I was a little stressed. I needed caffeine to keep me up, AND something to make me feel better at the same time. I tend to hide this tea so I don’t get tempted to drink it all the time. While searching through my stash, I found it again and immediately knew it was one of the times that I needed a cup.

I really can’t add much that hasn’t already been said about this tea. It’s blueberries galore, and then the pastry and cream cheese at the back of the sip. Apparently, the last time I logged this, I steeped for four minutes, while only going two and a half this time and either way was good! It will be a sad day when I run out of this.

My favorite! Congrats on the job! :)

I hope things won’t get too hectic! You need some me time too. And this is my favourite too!

At least there will be tea to help me relax if things do get crazy! This is definitely one of my favorites

I won this very generous amount of tea in one of the Della Terra giveaways. Unfortunately, it arrived at my school mail box just after I had left for the holidays. I was very interested in trying this, as one of the first loose leaf teas I ever tried was David’s Teas Chocolate Orange Puerh. I was really interested in how this compares with that, so ended up drinking this before trying all the winter Della Terra teas I received from my mom for Christmas.

It smells really good in the bag. When I first opened it, I was hit with a wonderful smell very much like the chocolate oranges you see at Christmas time. Unfortunately, I let it steep while working on homework, and let it go for much too long. I’m not sure exactly how long, but it was definitely enough to become bitter. I’m really excited about this one, so I’m sure I’ll try it again soon and pay special attention to make sure I do it properly! Hopefully it tastes as lovely as it smells.

This one is pretty resilient to long infusions, but if you forgot about it, that was probably too long. I think I may have infused mine for around 7 minutes the first time, and it was great!

I felt like I didn’t forget it for too much longer than the time I intended, but I must have. Or I used too much, because all I had was a bitter black tea taste and none of the flavors. Though that’s interesting and I’ll keep in mind that it stands up to long infusions.

Well, I have only had it once, and I would likely stick to a 5-minute infusion the next time I have it, but there was definitely flavour in mine! Granted though, I drink my teas warm, not hot, and flavours often develop more as the temperature drops.

I’ve never really been that impressed with this tea. It sorta gets a bitter walnut taste when steeped, instead of the banana nut muffin taste I imagined. I shared a pot with my mom who enjoys it quite a lot, so I’m letting her keep what I have left.

Good to know. Walnut in tea, that’s a flavour combo I don’t get.

This tea is what got me liking banana in tea, but yeah, the walnut taste always ruined it (but then I found Banana Oolong!)

I’ve been trying to be better about logging my teas, but I haven’t been doing a very good job! I have to work on it. Lately, I’ve noticed that I’ve been drawn more to oolongs and white teas, when I used to always want black teas and very sweet flavors. Perhaps my tastes are changing.

This tea was one I received for Christmas from my mom. I’m still not too experienced with white teas, so I won’t be able to give the best review of this. The steeped smell is a very nice creamy smell. The first taste of the sip is a creamy vanilla-ish flavor. I can really taste the white tea once it hits the back of my tongue. I’m not really picking up much pineapple with this. I think I got this a bit too hot, so that is probably affecting the flavors. I’ll definitely mess around with the steep times and temperatures.

I haven’t posted here in so long! School has been crazy. I got a lot of new tea for Christmas, so maybe I will be able to post more.

My mom and I shared this one last night. The jasmine flavor was very nice, not too overpowering. I didn’t taste a very large amount of coconut unfortunately. It seems to be a much more subtle flavor. Overall a good tea

drank Coconut Cream Pie by 52teas

I made this tea yesterday. I tried a sip with nothing added, and wasn’t very thrilled. I added milk and sugar, which seems to be the norm for me and 52teas. Unfortunately, right about this time one of my roommates started talking to me. We got carried away with our conversation. The tea MUST have been good because I sipped the whole thing down pretty quick, instead of getting distracted and letting it get cold. Unfortunately, all my attention was on the conversation, so I didn’t notice much about the tea. I remember it being sweet for sure, and I don’t remember any definite coconut taste, so I’m thinking the coconut is probably more subtle.

I would just make another cup to properly taste it, but I woke up this morning with a cold and I don’t trust myself now to taste anything very well at the moment.

Logging this from earlier today. I had this after lunch and before my Calculus class. I had to get a good amount of work done before class started, and I was wanting tea to help relax and focus. I was craving coconut tea. I pulled out a coconut chai, but I was wanting something lighter. Then I remembered this amazing sample from the Tea Merchant!

I steeped this for just one minute this time. I believe I went longer the other time I made this. Well, I liked this time much better. It ended up being just exactly the smooth, delicious, relaxing tea that I needed. The cup ended up empty before I knew it. I still need to compare this with Persimmon Tree’s coconut white tea and see which I like better. No matter which one is better though, this is still one amazing tea!

All my items received in swaps had to all be mixed together to move, so I don’t know what’s from who anymore. I received this from someone, so thank you to whoever that was.

I cold brewed this up to have at work. I wanted something quick and easy with caffeine, so I went to the tea bags. This steeped in the fridge for about six hours, and could have maybe gone for just a bit less time. The flavors are almost too strong at this point. At least I enjoy them, so it’s not much of a problem. The immediate flavors are BAMORANGEANDLEMON. Hiding behind that is some nice actual tea flavor. I added one pack of sugar and that made it SO good. It was still good without the sugar, just a bit tart. With the sugar added, it tastes just like some candy that I can’t quite think of right now. This is definitely one of the better bagged teas I’ve had.

I’ve lived in Hawaii, Mississippi, Colorado, Maryland, Texas, and California, and I’m currently in Oklahoma while the boyfriend gets his grad schooling on.

I’ve been into tea for about five years now and my favorite thing is that there is still so much to learn! I personally prefer black and oolong teas, though I love trying new teas whatever they may be.

I also knit quite a bit and sell things on my etsy when I’m not busy with school.

I really love swapping, so if anything in my cupboard catches your eye, please let me know!
