I brought along this sample from Alphakitty on our minibreak and had the perfect opportunity tonight to try it. We went to a wood fired cafe tonight that has this great “date night” option. Upstairs, they have a babysitter. You drop off your kids and then head off to dinner downstairs. You order food for your kids and they feed them upstairs. Wasn’t sure how the Bean or the little dude would do, but if meant the husband and i could drink beer and have normal adult conversation, I was pretty sure the kids could handle it.

Anyway, after way too much pizza, I ordered a s’mores. I’d seen someone else get one and it looked insane. Burnt marshmallow atop a chocolate bar atop a homemade graham cracker. It didn’t take much thinking. And it was crazy good. I actually didn’t eat much of the chocolate bar, it was too thick, but the burnt marshmallow/graham combo was to die for.

So… back to the matter at hand. When we got home I was still thinking about the wonder that was that s’mores and decided I’d try to prolong my enjoyment by making this tea. Funny thing, only thing i could really taste was the burnt marshmallow flavor, which is my favorite part. I didn’t taste much in the way of graham cracker or even chocolate for that matter, but the burnt marshmallow sold me. I can’t wait to get home and try the marshmallow treat sample that Alphakitty sent me as well.

I think I’d order this if it gets reblended again but first I’ll need to try the straight marshmallow one. Thanks Alphakitty for the treat!

That date night thing is pretty cool! I wish they had something like that when my kids were kids. :)

Tealizzy

That s’mores dessert sounds amazing!!

I haven’t had much luck with the 52teas lately so I was a little nervous about trying this. Luckily, it was an improvement over the last couple I’ve tried. Still not mind blowing by any means, but I can see making this every once awhile. There’s a banana flavor in there that bothers me a bit, so I think next time I’ll throw in some Cacao nibs from tisano to make it a little richer, which could mask it. This tea also required some milk and honey. Overall, it’s pretty decent. I won’t reorder, but I’ll go through my bag.

I really love this tea. Funny how I absolutely can’t stomach smokey teas, but I love super duper roasty teas. And the roastier the better… until they’re smokey. This tea walks that line perfectly.

Yum! Love this. Was not really expecting to, but man, I really do. The brown sugar crumble flavor is insane! Perfect end to the night!

Tealizzy

You beat me to this one! I had some this morning and it was awesome!

drank Ceylon Star by DAVIDsTEA

I got this in a swap from Tealizzy and I just saw her write about it and how much she likes it so I thought it was a good time to try it out. I didn’t know what Anise was, but upon googling realized I probably shouldn’t have requested this tea. I stand firmly on the “Black licorice is one of the worst flavor in the whole wide world” side of the fence. But, I already had the sample all queued up so might as well try it.

Wow! This is pretty good! I took a sip of it plain and the licorice flavor was there, not strong but still present. Then I added some milk and honey per Tealizzy’s instructions and the licorice flavor was gone and just a yummy creamy spicy tea remained. Not too heavy not too light. I’m diggin it!

Thanks Tealizzy!

update I used my whole sample to make big pot of this an guzzled it down. It’s going on the order list. I want more right now. Yum.

Tealizzy

Yay! The funny thing is I don’t like black licorice either, but this tea is great!

jessiwrites

I love black licorice and also think this tea is great! But I do drink it without anything added.

However… it is especially amazing with vanilla vodka. Just a tip.

TastyBrew

Ha ha. Great tip. Love to combine addictions. ;-)

drank Warm Apple Pie by sTEAp Shoppe

I didn’t have high hopes for this tea as I don’t tend to love apple teas, but the description sounded pretty tasty and i’m a sample junky so I added this to my cart. It’s an okay tea. I wish it was more of something though. It kind of tastes like watered down apple cider. Not bad by any means, but just no real oomph of any kind. I wish there was cinnamon or a richer apple or something to really make this into a pie flavor. I’ll drink the rest of my cup and sample bag for sure, but not re-order.

This is like drinking melted butter. And I do love butter. Yum.

Shmiracles

aww dang. i ordered this in a sample pack and they sent me orange brulee instead by accident. they’ll send me this one with my next order, but damn it sounds delish!!!

TastyBrew

It is really good. I’m just getting into milk oolongs and this one is raising the bar big time. A little salty too. I want to guzzle it but need to try and savor it. You’re gonna love it! I hope the orange brûlée was good at least!

Alysha

Guilt-free butter? I must try this!

Tealizzy

Darn it! I almost included this in my last order, but they only had the option to buy 2oz., and I wasn’t sure I’d like it. Poo! It sounds yummy!

This a tea company out of Portland that makes a chai concentrate that you can buy at the nicer grocery stores and get lattes at the local coffee shops. I love this chai. So spicy. Minimally sweet. The polar opposite of that awful “Oregon chai” which I totally can’t stand. This is one of my absolute favorite chais. I try and recreate it with my own loose leaf and can never replicate the spicyness. I don’t know how far their distribution goes, but if you ever see it offered, don’t miss the chance!

Starfevre

Before I got really into tea, I used to love Oregon Chai. Now…not so much.

Tealizzy

Starfevre – I am totally with you on that!!

drank Weeping Angel Tea by 52teas

Backlog from yesterday.

I bought this tea because I actually really love movie night from davids tea so was excited to try 52s caramel toffee popcorn. I read some notes so that I could get an idea for the ideal preparation method and I did about 3 mins at a little under boiling. Then I let it cool a bit. I could definitely taste the toffee-ish flavors, but no popcorn. So I added a little salt to see if that would bring out the popcorn, no luck. And then it just tasted strange.

Anybody have any suggestions for this one? I want to like it, but I couldn’t tweak it quite right. Suggestions?

Kittenna

Honestly, I got the best flavour from this one after it had cooled and sat by my bed overnight. Other than that, I actually am not the biggest fan of it, as it turns out, because the flavouring just isn’t prominent enough.

Alphakitty

I would suggest cold brewing it—after a long (12 hour) steep, it tastes like those buttered popcorn jellybeans to me!

TastyBrew

I love those jelly beans!!!! I have to try that! So this is a silly question, but what’s the best way to cold brew?

Alphakitty

I like to cold brew overnight in a regular tall drinking glass (with an aluminum foil cap to keep scent contamination at bay), though I know a lot of people love mason jars for cold brewing. Fill it up with filtered water and add a teaspoon or two of leaves-as much as you’d use for 8oz of hot water, since it’ll sit for such a long time you can go light on the leaf. You can also add sugar if you like, it will dissolve overnight. Pop it in the fridge, let it sit for 10-12 hours, then pour it through a sieve or similar device to get out the leaves. Voila, iced tea! You can obviously heat it up as well though haha

TastyBrew

I’ll give that a go tonight. I have a few I may try that with as well. Thanks!

Alphakitty

No problem! Cold brewing is actually my favorite method for making tea.

I got this in a big swap with AlphaKitty and was really looking forward to this one. So much so that I brought it with me on our little mini trip away. Once we got to our destination and I was ready to settle in and relax I brewed some of this. It smelled great dry.

But alas, pu erh and I just don’t seem to be great friends. We get along great when I can barely taste it (cinnamon swirl bread, Aztec spice) but this one was a much stronger pu erh flavor and I just couldn’t seem to get used to it. Maybe someday my tastes will evolve, but that day was not today. Thanks for the taste though Alphakitty!

I love tea. And I love beer. I spent my twenties thoroughly enjoying all that beer has to offer but now that I’m into my thirties and a stay at home mom of 2 little kids and 1 big kid, I spend more time enjoying tea.

I joined steepster in Feb 2013 and it’s crazy how much my tastes have changed since joining. Before, I liked cream and honey in all teas and loved mostly dessert blacks. Now I almost rarely drink them, but enjoy them from time to time. What I love more than anything are straight rich black teas, Fujian, Laoshan, Rizhao, etc… I also love pretty much any black tea that the little leaf hoppers have gotten their teeth on.

I’m still not too into the green/white/oolong varieties. I keep trying to but my tastes are evolving pretty slowly on that front.

Overall, I just enjoy tea. Something about it that just settles me.
