45 Tasting Notes

Napuk FTGFOP1 from Mariage Frères

I brewed this tea for five minutes this morning and it improved substantially. It is really a good Assam tea.

Tippy Assam Tea from Tea Embassy

Assam Maijian T.G.F.O.P. Second Flush from Le Palais des Thes
87

This is not my favorite, but it is a very good Assam.

Jade Himalaya from Mariage Frères
85

This is a good green tea. While I often don’t drink green teas, this has a light astringency and leaves a really good taste in my mouth as I drink it.

Darjeeling Second Flush Mineral Springs from Postcard Teas
87

This is one of the better, if not the best, Darjeeling teas I’ve had. I’ve not had enough to know if I like first flush, second, or some other option, but this is good. I still like Assam teas better, but this is very enjoyable.

It is more astringent than the Assams I usually drink, which may be why I lean more toward those, but this has a great taste while drinking it and a lovely aftertaste, too.

Guerriers from Mariage Frères
74

As described by MF, this is a very good morning tea. I don’t know that it awakened the warrior in me, but it was a smooth blend in which no one type of tea stands out to me. The crushed leaves allows more flavor to come out because there is much more surface area, but I suspect it also allows for the use of lesser quality teas. It also didn’t require quite as much as a teaspoon per cup when I weighed it on my gram scale.

Assam (Organic) from Teaism
73

This is a good, basic Assam. It doesn’t have a lot of malty, chewy flavor to it, but it is a nice tea. I’ve had it in the afternoon and prefer it to a “stronger” Assam that is great in the morning.

Kaiser from Mariage Frères
89

I’m really liking this tea. The tea has a few golden tips, I am guessing from an Assam. It is “strong” like an Assam, but not quite as malty. My overall impression is very high.

Ceylon Galle Berubeula from Mariage Frères
75

This was a fine Ceylon tea, with a bit of astringency on the tip of my tongue. I enjoyed it and agree with MF that it is an excellent daytime tea.

Gold Himalaya from Mariage Frères
78

The MF description is “over the top” and makes this sound like one of the best teas ever. This is good, but it is much more like a green tea than I expected. It has a lot of depth and many good features, though, and it is a tea I will enjoy many more times.

Napuk FTGFOP1 from Mariage Frères
88

This is a very good, classic Assam tea.

Numalighur FTGFOP1 from Mariage Frères
76

This is a very good Assam tea. It should be at the price MF charges for it. It was not as malt-forward as many Assams, which at first caused me to question whether it could be my “favorite” Assam tea. Its astringency is less than others, too.
This first time, I followed the Mariage Freres instructions. I suspect that the five minutes step time may have been too long for my tastes, I’ll look forward to another taste soon.
The second infusion of this tea was for 6 minutes. It had more of the initial malty flavor like most Assam teas.

Rouge Tea from Mariage Frères
86

This is good Rooibos tea. It seems deeper in taste than the previous brand I’d tried, but that could be a factor of the amount of tea I used in this brew. Either way, I’ve become a fan of Rooibos tea.

Organic Assam from Carytown Teas
66

My sample is lableled only “Assam” and the tea leaves are much smaller than the photo, but the smaller pieces allow for a lot of flavor to come through. Good Assam, even on the second infusion (for which I used a 5 minute infusion).

Assam from Teaism
68

This was good, but not great, Assam.

Tippy Assam Tea from Tea Embassy
86
Ceylon Vithanakanda from The Cultured Cup
63

This black tea is good, but I’ve recently enjoyed several others more. I probably didn’t give it a good chance to enjoy, though, as I was swamped at work and didn’t get to it when it was the hottest. I’ll try again later and see if it improves.

China Yunnan Golden Downy Pekoe (571) from TeaGschwendner

Darjeeling FTGFOP 1 Soom No. 230 from TeaGschwendner
83

Wow, I’ve really enjoyed this tea today. It is very good.

Rooibos from PA Dutch Tea & Spice Company
84

I really liked this. It was a great evening-at-work tea.

Bengali Blend from Tea Embassy
59

This is a good black tea, but I’ve had more of a “buzz” from this tea. I’ve concluded that I like the C.S. Lewis tea from Tea Embassy better than this.

CS Lewis Blend from Tea Embassy
83

I’ve tried this several times in the past several days and liked it much more than I did when I first got it. The French Breakfast tea is much more of a favorite, but this has hit spot on several times.

Darjeeling FTGFOP 1 Soom No. 230 from TeaGschwendner
83

Very good Darjeeling tea. I liked this much better than the Margaret’s Hope I tried recently.

China Lapsang Souchong - 581 from TeaGschwendner
60

This tea has a strong smokey smell before it is steeped. I didn’t like that aspect of it, but tried it to see how the smoke would transfer to the cup. It did so more than I liked. I’ll finish this bag, but it is not a tea I’d purchase again.

Profile

Bio

I’m a long-time tea drinker with experience mostly with tea bags and lots of iced tea. In early 2011, I purchased a Breville tea maker and started trying several loose leaf teas.

I’m enjoying learning more about teas and developing my favorites. I’ve discovered that the Breville makes a great cup of tea and suspect I enjoy most of the teas I’ve tried much more because of the quality of tea the Breville brews.
