I had this tea yesterday afternoon when I got my swap box from Dexter 3657. Thank-you Dexter3657! First of all I got the brew mixed up. I put some hot water in my cup to warm it up and then had the infuser in the cup warming up too. Then after it had sat there I went and added the tea leaves. Woops! So I dumped it out and added the boiling water to the tea leaves. I may have washed away some of the chocolate flavour but it was still very good. Not what I was expecting but good. I had this taste in my mind of nutty rice and chocolate. I got more of a smooth oolong/black mix with some chocolate notes and a bit of the roasted rice. The rice was in the background and I thought it would be a much stronger flavour. Overall, I still enjoyed it and sipped to the last drop and had a 2nd infusion. That’s a pretty good black tea since I don’t usually enjoy the blacks too often!

drank Formosa Oolong Finest by TeaFrog

I can’t believe I’ve never had this tea from Tea Frog until now. Brewed for 3 min at 195F. This is a very strong oolong. If it didn’t have oolong on the package I would swear this was a black tea. I prefer the light oolongs but do like some of the roasted too. This one is just too strong of an oolong for me. I can taste the roasted sweetness which some might like but it’s not for me. Into the swap pile it goes.

drank Rooibos Earl Grey by PC Brand

I’ve been buying this tea for a few years. It’s a good Earl Grey Rooibos. The Earl Grey flavouring is strong enough but not overpowering. I enjoy it as an evening tea. My biggest beef is that the box the bags come in is HUGE and hard to fit in my tea cabinet. Each tea bag is sealed in a pouch which is HUGE too but by being sealed, it really stays fresh.

drank Genmai Cha by Yamamotoyama

I purchased this at the PAT Asian market yesterday while at the vet (they are right near each other). I wanted to try a different Genmai cha . I looked for a package that didn’t have clear cellophane to let the light in thinking that if the company did that, it’s going to be better quality. This one was about $5 for 200g. When I checked out the brew times I could see there were decent brew temperatures too.
I checked the reviews first before having it and was disappointed it had some bad reviews. That was because there are two Genmai cha’s on Steepster. One with a hyphen and then this one. This is the one I’ve got. Matches the package.
Opened up I could see it was a nice sencha not a green tea. Some of the rice was popped too. I haven’t had a lot of genmaicha so far but I think that’s a good sign it’s a decent quality.
Brewed at 190F for 30 sec. This one has a deep grassy vegetal taste from the sencha along with the toasty rice. A nice balance. Some genmaicha’s are more toasty rice but I didn’t get that from this one. There seems to be a lot less caffeine than the other genmaicha I have too.

Had this tea this morning. I enjoyed it but it doesn’t seem too much different from any other Jasmine Pearls I’ve had. I really can’t tell the difference from one to the other. I might have to brew them all up and have them side to side to see which one I like best.

Bio

Green teas are my favourite teas but I also enjoy: white, some herbal, rooibos, raw pu’erh, light oolongs, a little bit of black , and a little bit of ripe pu’erh. I have moved away from artificial flavourings and there’s hardly anything left in my cabinet with artificial flavouring or colours. It is mostly straight teas or tea blends.
