Thanks to ScottTeaMan for getting me a sample of this from Upton!

The dry leaves do smell very malty, and the leaves are beautiful. I always thought that Pekoe referred to Indian/Sri Lankan teas but I guess I was wrong.

My tea liquor is a dark orange color and smells malty and a little bit spicy! It has that sweet potato/starchy quality that reminds me a bit of a golden monkey. The tea is very gentle with no astringency. It has a bit of a cocoa aroma/flavor as well as smelling a bit… “bready?” The sweet and gentle nature of the tea kind of coats your mouth and is very moistening. The aftertaste on this one definitely lingers. This is definitely a nice afternoon tea for today!

Steeped via regular infuser mug method. I did one resteep and the second cup is still pleasant although the flavor has faded a bit.

I thought it was similar to a Golden Monkey too, but lighter. Glad you liked it Amy. I’m pretty sure Pekoe refers to the leaf size.

Looked it up-here’s a couple slightly different descriptions:

Look for the 2012 pre-chingming selections at Upton’s. They have a few already. :))

Did anyone besides me get the malted milk shake??

TeaBrat

Uh? You wanted me to look something up, I’m lazy!
Malty and cocoa-y, I agree, but milkshakes are creamy and I didn’t really get that so much.

ScottTeaMan

It was the aroma from my warmed tea press. Maybe not quite that creamy, I agree. I think I just got alot of malt & thought of a milkshake. :))

There’s a dizzying array of pre-chingming teas on their site now. I just don’t know which ones to sample!

ScottTeaMan

Amy, if you have enuff for a couple more cups, try preparing one cup with some leaves, then use the rest and add them to the steeped leaves. I usually get different flavors and depth. Sometimes there can be more astringency-even bitterness. With the pre-chingming teas, I have not had that problem.
