1109 Tasting Notes

The dry leaf is amazing – twisted wirey ribbons on tea with the odd brown tip with strong scent of fruit! A very photogenic tea!

Taste wise very clean, fresh, smooth, fruity plums, honey, lots of dark woodsy, bit of earth and char notes. I enjoyed the sweet notes and the excellent quality freshness, but I wasn’t into the woodsyness in nonpareil dian hong as it had a similar vibe to me as a rooibos, but more of a dark wood, but I can see many others enjoying this tea!

Now, this is a ginger tea with a kick! Cockatiel’s tea has that ginger ale like flavor, the kind with a moderate blast of heat to it, just how I like my ginger ale!

The white peony tea here is fresh, and sips in sweet and floral, with the ginger burn finishing off each sip, burning down the throat. The ginger is not bitter, and the heat mostly comes from the habanero infused white tea than the ginger.

Wish I had more to try this tea iced – I can see Cockatiel’s tea making a great ginger iced tea!

I got this tea as part of SBT last kickstarter. i finished a pitcher of this iced tea today. So far, this one is my favorite – the lime goes great in southern style iced tea. Not that cheesecakey, but still very delicious.
I might need to snag more for the new SBT kickstarter!

Last tea for Oolong Week! This one is a nice medium roast Dong Ding. This Dong Ding has really nice roasty flavor, nutty sunflower notes, savory elements with a sweetness that shows up in later infusions. Very crisp, clean and fresh tasting tea.

Later steepings has a bit of bitterness, similar to nut shells, and a hint of astringency.

Man, I wished I ordered a package of this instead of just requesting a sample! Very delicious! I’m an intrigued by the hops teas at Butiki, but I wasn’t sure if I’d enjoy them since I don’t like alcohol, but I do love rhubarb teas. BTW, I added a bit of german rock sugar while steeping.

Rhubarb Vanilla Ale is smooth, cooked sweet rhubarb flavor, bit of an interesting spice dancing in the background that I’m not to familiar with, the hops? Very fun tea, I shall get more next time I do an order!

Awkward Soul-This beer tea has a mild hops, which comes off as spicy but not aggressive. Sugar will decrease the flavor of hops but this blend is perfect with just a touch of sugar. Our Peach HoppiTea uses a much more aggressive hops which has a strong grapefruit flavor.

I received this tea as part of the Steepsteristas’ Yarn and Tea Swap! So pumped to try this tea – I was on the verge of doing an order, but since A&D didn’t take paypal, plus the large tin sizes, it was enough for me to back off for now.

This is pure malty goodness. First sip was, “now that’s a black tea!” Very bold, smooth yet sharp. Malty, little raisin notes with a brisk finish. Slight creamyness too. Small amount of dryness at the end.

Yum! Now I need to sample more of A&Ds teas, or just cave in with an order!

i can send you samples of the ones i have if you want…though i won’t be able to do anything until the first weekend in may

MEGA PUMPKIN! I quite enjoyed this oolong blend. This tea has a very natural tasting pumpkin flavor over a malty, almondy oolong base with a soft creamy finish.

Love the pumpkin flavor – this is the most pumpkiny flavored tea I’ve had so far! I thought it would be more creamy, but this tea is still pretty delicious. With sweetener, there is a bit of a caramel flavor going on. Pumpkin 2.0 also does a good resteep!

Oolong week (again) at Oolong Owl! Today – Jin Xuan, a milk oolong that is heavy on the buttery, orchid floral flavor. So much butter flavor in the early steepings, pleasing my diet killing cravings for butter. There is also a green bean vegetal note in this oolong. The 5th to 8th infusions were the best steepings as the balance of floral and vegetal was awesome, along with a clean and fresh flavor.

What is interesting is the cold steeping of Jin Xuan – the floral really tames down and is light. The cold steep tastes like milk and butter.

The leaves in this oolong expand like crazy in the later steepings, trying to jail break out of my gaiwan.

This tea is just not cooperating with me. I’m not getting the dark oolong goodness others are getting, but a light roasted oolong with a golden ochre colour.

I tried first at 185F steeping, and the tea was on the light side, but with a good caramel sweets flavor, with a light nutty roasty oolong background. A little bit of orange flavor, but still good. Overall, light and watery on flavor.

So I went in again, this time with 200F water and a bit more leaf. The caramel flavor is brighter, with the oolong tasting sharper, but still not rich, and with some light to moderate astringency at the end, making the cup not as enjoyable – it lacked that smoothness my last cup had.

I was actually going to review it for Oolong Owl, but yeah, not happy this tea isn’t turning out how others here are getting it.

Have you tried Golden Moon’s sugar caramel oolong? Yum.

I haven’t, but Golden Moon is on my list to order from sometime. So many teas!

I need some black tea pump before I begin making my carrot cake for my tea hating husband and I’s 2nd wedding anniversary meal! Hooooot!

MMmmm, free teabag from Lupicia’s monthly tea magazine from awhile ago. This one is a black tea flavored with guava and papaya. It’s sweet and really fruity. I can be iffy on papaya, and sipping in theres a soapy papaya taste which I’m not into. After that, a really tasty guava flavor with a light black tea base standard of Lupicia black tea blends.

Wish I made this iced, I can imagine this tea would be really awesome iced. Ah well, peeps who like papaya would enjoy this tea more than me.

Boiling 2 min, 45 sec

Happy anniversary :)

Two years? Already? Wow! Enjoy each other!

I’m a crafty knitter and crocheter that loves to work on a project and drink tea. I worked as a counsellor and I chain-drink tea to keep me calm and grounded.

I’m a tea blogger – The Oolong Owl
www.OolongOwl.com – I do tea reviews, obsessively photograph teas with mischievous crocheted Owls and get tea drunk.

I was raised on floral oolongs and green teas, mostly “beauty” teas. Early on as a kid, I can guzzle an entire pot of tea (or two) at a Chinese or Japanese restaurant.
These days I like adventurous and interesting tea blends. I’m fearless in trying new teas! I’m into oolong, pu’erh, white, green, black, guayusa, mate and herbals. I’m not into red rooibos but I keep buying it anyway.

The tea brand that got me started into loose leaf teas was DAVIDsTea. I used to live in Vancouver Canada and had access to their shop, however that is now limited since I moved to southern California.

However, the perks of living in the US is ultra cheap, fast shipping! Since then, my tea stash insanely expanded.
My recommended tea shops:
Mandala Tea
Steep City Teas
Butiki Teas
Della Terra Teas
Verdant Tea
Yunnan Sourcing
52 Teas / Zoomdweebies
Red Leaf Tea
New Mexico Tea Co
Bluebird Tea Co
The Persimmon Tree

Other stuff I’m into that sneaks into my tea notes: Brazilian jiu-jitsu, metal music, drawing, painting, cooking, photography and nail polish.

I have a husband and a bunny who both hate tea. More for me!!!! MUUAHAHAHAHAAA
