411 Tasting Notes

Phoenix Pearl from Zen Tea
93

Ok how is this even the same tea I rated earlier? I drank it and immediately thought that this was amazing and my new favorite tea! I brewed it Western Style, and this is very smooth, delicate and lightly sweet. There are some really tasty flavors that I love but can’t quite narrow down, except cocoa and honey!

I will have to order some!!!

Thx ozli!

Are yunnan teas normally like this?

Sun Dried Jingshan Green from Verdant Tea
79

Thanks Mercuryhime for the sample!

After reading the reviews and finding that this is one of the ‘fancier’ teas, I whipped out my little gongfu pot for serious tea brewing business!

It was worth it. I steeped it three times, and I really enjoyed the buttery green flavours. I tastes a little sweet and a little citrusy as some of the reviewers have mentioned. Maybe I should have steeped it for longer but this feels like a delicate green, suitable for quiet reflection (as opposed to some of my flavoured blacks that are good when I’m juggling 5 things at once and want tea that comes to me, instead of me sitting down to enjoy it!)

Buckingham Palace Garden Party from English Tea Store
81

Thanks Val for the sample! (This is one of our Steepster Tea Club selections!)

I like this tea – it’s a mix of a lot of things but I immediately think ‘this is fancy’ when I sip it. There are just so many flavours in it that it’s a treat to sip. I’m getting jasmine notes too. This is a great afternoon cup to drink and re-steep!

Thanks for the sample!

Cherry from Love is Tea (LIT)

Not sure what happened with this – maybe I have a bad association, but this made me think of cherry cough syrup. I don’t know that cherry is my thing so I won’t rate it as other people may enjoy this tea!

Thanks Yssah for letting me try it out!

Cinnamon-Orange from Market Spice
71

I don’t know why but this tea is synonymous with late-night sipping. Even though it tastes artificially sweet and orangy, i still crave it. I guess it’s like when I crave Big Macs or something like that. :P

Once I’m done drinking the 2 oz I have left, I have 2 oz of this Three Cinnamon Tea my mom brough me from the interior. :D

Checkmate from DAVIDsTEA
87

I decided today that I needed to drink Checkmate! Usually I just start boiling water and then sorta stare at everything wondering how I am supposed to choose, but not today. I svaoured this cup, had a nap, and then am off to resteep it! It’s so lightly nutty and flavorful. It really really tastes like white tea to me now – I guess I’m slowly figuring this stuff out.

Besides my Amoda tea order, which I don’t think I’ll get until April because I subscribed 2 days after the March deadline, I have NO MORE TEA on the way. Everything I have now, is what I have. So I feel more like I can just relax and enjoy it instead of, “OMG I better pick something I can sipdown! Why do I have all the tea?”

(I know. Life is so rough.)

Prince Charles Blend from Murchie's Tea & Coffee
79

I cold-brewed this for about 5 hours in the fridge and this was the first of many experiments to come! While this is one of the Murchie’s teas that I’ve always consistently enjoyed, this is smoother and mellower. Maybe I understeeped it as it almost feels like this is a green/black blend instead of all black.

Coconut Cream Pie from 52teas
74

Thanks ozli!

I sorta oversteeped this, by steeping it for about 5 minutes or so but it worked out just fine. It is really good!

That is all. :P (for now)

Blueberries & Cream from Love is Tea (LIT)
74

This was a free sample from Yssah with my Ovation package. Thanks!

It semlls quite strongly of blueberries, and it was in such a cute little bag that I thought I would try this out right away.

Once steeped it smells quite strongly of blueberries, but the taste is quite mild and relaxing. There is a lot of creaminess in there, with a hint of vanilla. The black base is very smooth with only a touch of astringency.

High Mountain Oolong from DAVIDsTEA
81

Thanks Mercuryhime for the sample!

Had I known this was so expensive I might have saved it for another day. Instead I drank the first steep over a few hours while taking care of the baby, and am just now savouring the second steep while I sit down and relax.

The first steep was very smooth and grassy and oolongy, and it made me wonder why I don’t drink regular oolongs more often. They’re so good!

This second steep is much richer with lots of vegetal notes. It’s really enjoyable, but I think the fanciness is lost on me as I don’t really see how this is that much better than my Iron Goddess Oolong (Tie Guan Yin). Maybe I will set the rest of this sample aside and try it again in a few more months to see I can distinguish more.

Rootbeer from Love is Tea (LIT)
72

I just received this one today, and as the smell of it had completely dominated the package, I thought I had better try it – it smelled so good!

I’m pretty happy I gave this a shot. I was nervous because DavidsTea’s Cherry Cola was abhorrent (is that too strong of a word? Maybe not), but this is very smooth and nice. It reminds me a little of 52 Teas’ Butterbeer.

How do you describe Root Beer tea? I wish I knew what herbs/spices were in it because Root Beer can have a lot of things in it. What I do know is that I steeped it for 5 minutes and it is very smooth and not at all bitter. I think there may even be a bit of vanilla notes mixed in with the “root beer” ish spices.

… I am not doing this tea justice. :P It’s nice though!

Mother's Little Helper (organic) from DAVIDsTEA
96
Fireside Spice from Della Terra Teas

Hmmm, when I had this before there was so much flavor. This time, it’s like watered down cinnamon. Maybe I should have steeped it for more than 3 minutes?

IDK. Guess I’ll move onto another cup.

I am all stressfaced over here – my bf is getting grad school acceptance letters and we may have to move to Toronto. There’s only one school in BC that we’re waiting to here back from that would prevent that. :|

Ontario eh? Sounds…. cold.

But there’s a fair number of steepsterites over there, so that’s something!

I think it’ll be a few months before we hear from UBC and know for sure wth is actually going on. So I’m in limbo and that’s sorta the worst.

Just like this tea is in limbo. Will try it again before I rate it.

Long Life Oolong from DAVIDsTEA
70

This was the last of that! It’s pretty good. Very light and fruity, but it doesn’t really taste like a typical oolong. So, if I want fruity tea this is great, but I think I’d be happier with something that was more oolongy.

Blueberry Jam (organic) from DAVIDsTEA
77

Wow. This seems fairly strong AND sweet. So many berries! Most of them, blueberries! The tea itself just sorta faded into the background, but I can see why it’s named after jam.

I think I would try this again sometime if I want to satisfy a sweet craving.

Thanks ozli!

And I’m cheering this sipdown because I am now (accidentally) over 110 teas, and I have more on the way from Yssah and my Ovation order.

Chocolate Covered Strawberry from Della Terra Teas
82

Tasty! How come Della Terra can do chocolate tea so well? I’ve enjoyed all the ones in the chocolate sampler pack. I probably wouldn’t buy a lot of any of them but I might do another sampler!

Even after letting it sit until it cooled, it still feels like I’m getting plump strawberries with every sip.

Organic White Peony (Bai Mu Dan) Tea from Teavivre
77

I brewed this for 5 minutes as was recommended (@160F). It seems really flowery and buttery. Not sure if that’s normal for Bai Mu Dan but it’s quite pleasant.

I made a whole pot for our roleplaying group. Hope they enjoy it, and that it resteeps well.

Butterbeer from 52teas
81

Still strange and wonderful. Not for everyday drinking lest it lose its magic.

Raspberry Spice Chai Tea from Murchie's Tea & Coffee
63

Ok – now that I know how weak of a ‘chai’ this is, I steeped it for a bit longer with more leaves. It’s better?

While it was hot/warm I got a lot of raspberry with a touch of cream, and it was pretty enjoyable. Now that I’ve let it cool to room temperature (I blame the baby!), it’s mostly bitter with a little bit of berry. Bleh.

So… this would be good if I kept it covered while I sipped away.

Earl Black from 52teas
83

I steeped this without reading the description and tried to figure ut what it tasted like that way. What I decided? Grape. Lots of grape.

Turns out it has black currant in it. :P Oh well – from the comments I’m not the only one who thought so. For a tea named after The Earl, I’m not detecting any bergamot, which is actually a blessing as I’m sorta picky about how much of that I can stand.

There’s a bit of tartness and more sweetness but it’s very pleasant. I haven’t had many white teas but I could see getting more of this in the future!

Strawberry Cream - fruit from Zen Tea
71

I made this for my evening pot and it sure turned into such a pretty red brew. Unfortunately, that means it’s laced with hibiscus. :|

I did know that going in though. As expected it’s pretty tart, and I’m only getting a bit of creamy strawberry under all that. It’s almost ok though? I bet if I had it iced it would be much better.

Thanks ozli for letting me try this!

The 1894 Tea from Murchie's Tea & Coffee
78

At first I thought this was a little bitter, but I find that with each sip it tastes better. It’s supposed to be medium strength but it might be stronger than that. It’s actually a quite pleasant black tea.

Mmm. It’s super tasty with a splash of milk.

This was my choice for Steepster’s book club. I picked it because it sounds fancy and the tea was first blended around the same time that the book is set. I hope the others I’m swapping with like it.

Swiss Mountain from Della Terra Teas
84

When I first read the description for this tea, I wasn’t terribly excited but that was a mistake. This is tasty as hell, which is a good thing. This is pretty much the tea equivalent of After Eight chocolate bars. Or Mint Aero? So good!

Raspberry Spice Chai Tea from Murchie's Tea & Coffee
63

Not too bad, but I made it with milk and the milk totally overwhelms all the flavours. I’m getting a smidgen of raspberry and that’s about it. At least it’s distracting me from mindless snacking.

Profile

Bio

Tea: I just started drinking loose tea earlier this year and once I started I had to get more and more and try ALL THE TEAS. So far it seems that I like simple oolongs, greens and rooibos teas, and that black teas are where I go crazy with fancy flavoured blends.

Me: I’m a geek, animal lover, new mom, and bookworm. I like Lord of the Rings, Doctor Who, Game of Thrones, pen&paper RPG’s, online RPG’s, video games, silly internet memes, puzzles and a bunch of others things!

Ratings:
1-50: Bleh.
51-64: It’s ok.
65-75: It’s good.
76-85: It’s very good. (Buy 1oz+)
86-100: Amazing. (ALWAYS re-stock)
