518 Tasting Notes

First note: I’m really glad I decided to get the Simple Loose Leaf subscription. These teas are great, and you get so much of them. Next month, I might just go ahead and get some of all 5. I haven’t decided yet.

Anyway this tea…I like how cranberry it is, although today I’m getting more of the cherry. It’s a nice tea for at night, but I could definitely see drinking this in afternoon well. (I need my caffeine the morning.)

I came home from work today and took a nap. Obviously, I’m still sick. I decided against anything with caffeine tonight to be sure I can fall asleep when I go to bed. This tea was nice the last time I had it, so I thought I’d go with it again. Yum. I got more of the mint in this mugful, but it’s still nice and lemony and rosy. I’m glad I took a chance while it was on sale to get this one. (I think I might throw it in my pitcher and try a cold steep for tomorrow, too.)

Preparation
Boiling 6 min, 30 sec 3 tsp 15 OZ / 443 ML

Yeah, this is tired and old. I found a tin of it here at work and I thought I’d try it. It’s so old, though, that it’s no longer on their website.

It makes a beautiful looking infusion, but it’s just MEH to drink. It’s old, rather bland, not very lemony anymore. The Rooibos is there, but that tastes old and sad, too.

I’m not giving this a ranking or anything because this just doesn’t count.

Wow. This one smelled amazing when I opened the sample packet. Green and fresh (although it’s actually almost a year old now) and oh so delicious. And so bright green, too. Lovely to look at.

I approximated the western brewing directions, using 5g and 14oz of water.

Once the water hit the leaves, the aroma was even more veggie. Mmmmm.

It tastes very green, vegetable, fresh, slightly floral. It’s almost creamy in texture in my mouth. (I guess that’s buttery. Seems a weird way to describe it.) Someone said green beans in an earlier review, and I could buy that, although I thought more spinach. I really like this.

The second infusion was not so spinachy, but it seemed creamier. It was quite satisfying both first and second infusion. I tried a third and it was alright, but not spectacular. It just tasted like average green tea by that point.

I will try the other sample pack of this gong fu style.

Preparation
180 °F / 82 °C 2 min, 30 sec 5 g 14 OZ / 414 ML

Another one from last night.

This is a nice, fruity herbal. I quite liked it. When I added the dry tea (I can’t call it leaf, since it’s not leaf) to my infuser, I was worried it would be too tart just because of the amount of cranberries. My fears were set aside once I tasted this. Yes, it tasted like cranberry, but it was very well balanced with the cherry in that it wasn’t tart. It wasn’t too sweet, but it was nice and fruity. It was a nice, dark pinky rosy color.

I would like to try this one iced.

I had this one yesterday evening. Whoa, is this one different.

I tasted almost a honey flavor, a floral flavor (probably the chamomile), and a berry something, it was also mildly spicy. Definitely different. I did a second infusion and it wasn’t as honey or chamomile, but it was still different and delicious. I like this. I don’t know that I would drink it often, but I’m glad I have enough for a few more mugs.

This was actually not the second tea I drank yesterday. I think I have a mislabeled tea from The Tea Spot, so I don’t want to write a review of that one yet until I know for sure. (Plus, I absolutely oversteeped the first mug of that and it was bitter and horrible so I just poured it out. The second mug was much better, but not at all what I was expecting. So I switched to something else that was what I knew it was, and one I knew would be delicious.)

So this tea yesterday afternoon was perfect. I love spearmint. This tea is spearmint and gunpowder. The perfect amount of minty and green with a slightly metallic finish. Tasty.

I did a second infusion of this one, drank half of it and took a nap. I finished the mug when I woke back up, and it was still delicious cold. I think I’ll do a cold infusion of this one so that I can try it iced.

It was the sample of this tea I got from carol who that made me place a whole order with The Tea Spot. I really like this tea that much.

So I had this yesterday morning but my computer decided to no longer boot up, so I couldn’t add it. (I was having trouble trying to add teas on my tablet.)

This was in my Simple Loose Leaf April box. I normally don’t drink a lot of black teas, but I decided I wanted to get one this month with my subscription.

It’s got a great aroma when opening the pack. Deep and rich.

As I don’t drink a lot of blacks, I always forget how beautiful the liquor is. It’s a dark reddish color. I honestly don’t know how to describe the flavors. It tastes like black tea, but a nice one, not dusty like bagged black always taste to me.

I’m also really tired today, which is part of why I’m not totally remembering. It’s my first day back in the office in a week. I had furniture delivered on Monday, I was at home sick Tuesday and Wednesday, and still not allowed to be around people until late afternoon on Thursday when I went to robots for the rest of the weekend.

I should try this tea with milk and sugar, but with this horrible cough I’m dairy free until it clears up. I’ve got plenty, so I’ll do that later.

Marzipan

I drink blacks more than anything, maybe we should have a regular swap!

Cheri

Maybe…I still don’t have a lot of tea. I have a lot of samples of tea and a few teas I have more than just a sample of.

Cheri

Sorry I was kinda short on this…I think it’s in part the whole still not feeling well yet thing. What kind of tea were you thinking about swapping?? What are you looking to get? (I have more that isn’t listed as in my cupboard yet, too.)

Marzipan

I’m pretty open, my collection is growing by the day. Just today I got some samples, and some of those I don’t know that I will even drink (I’m not a big fan of cherry and several have cherry in the title). Anything in my cupboard is pretty much fair game.

Cheri

Anything in particular you’re looking for?

Cheri

(types, really, or anything I already have called out as having)

I had this last night, it was one of many that showed up in my mail while I was gone for a few days. Of course, I was exhausted when I got home, so I don’t remember a lot of this one.

It doesn’t look as nice as the picture but it makes for in the scents drifting out the when I opened it. Rosy, lemony, slightly minty. It found it to taste just like that, too. The lemon flavor was stronger than the rose, but it was definitely rose, with a hint of spearmint to it. It was quite tasty. Reviews talk about a cold steep, so I’ll have to try that.

Being all stuffed up and drinking this one out of a travel mug with lid on it just doesn’t work. I took the sip top off and it really helps a lot. I still can’t quite smell it right, but it’s getting there. This tastes fine, but one needs to be able to breathe in the scent to really get the full effect of the jasmine.

keychange

You should get the carry travel mug!

Cheri

I looked at it. Does it have a good sip top? I usually drink tea in the morning while driving to work, so I need something that doesn’t spill. There aren’t any good pictures of the parts….

keychange

Hmmm, if you fill this one too close to the top it might spill as you tip it towards your mouth, although it really shouldn’t. The mesh lid really perfectly mimics drinking from an open top mug so that you can really smell your tea as you drink it. I really used to like the contigo auto-seal mugs, although not being able to smell my tea was such a dealbreaker.

Cheri

Being able to smell the tea is nice. I may have to try it. Plus it’s 16oz, which is really nice. The Thermos one is 12oz. It’s got some air holes, which does help for smelling but not really enough with the stuffed up nose I have from allergies and this awful cold. It keeps things nice and warm, though, which is really nice, and it’s the perfect size for my cupholder. Where’s the travel mug from again??

keychange

This one retains heat unlike any mug I’ve ever tried—definitely for seven hours. You can find it here:

Bio

Still relatively new to drinking teas, or so I feel, even though I’ve been at it for several months now.

I’m drinking more and more of different varieties of tea.

It’s been a few months that I’ve been on here. I’ve expanded from greens and flavored teas to now I’m all about the oolongs and some unflavored blacks. I’m mostly drinking unflavored teas now, but there are a few of those flavored ones that have a special place in my heart.

Pu-erh is also something I’ve recently found that I enjoy.

I have four kitties and a spouse.
