“Another Traveling Tea Box?!?!”

Mmmm… fresh, toasty rice cakes! I’m honestly not getting marshmallow or chocolate, which is weird because I’m eating a VERY chocolate-y Sunbutter bar with this for my afternoon work tea-time break.

Ok… as it cools, I’m picking up a little bit of marshmallow flavor, but still not really getting much chocolate. This decent as a genmaicha, but I’m disappointed in it as a S’mores-flavored tea.

This smells go good. I do very much like lemon-lime teas. It’s similar to another citrus rooibos tea I really like, but more cheesecakey.

Mmm… breakfast in a cup. There is a nice maple flavour, it’s creamy and not overly sweet. I haven’t really had good luck with maple black teas, but I like this one. (It was good with my toast, didn’t have pancakes).

Sipdown! Used up the rest of my packet of this in cold brews over the last couple of weeks. I wasn’t over keen on it hot or cold, but my parents seemed to like it. It’s definitely more palatable cold, but there’s still something about the taste that just doesn’t agree with me. Still, I guess you can’t win them all!

Tried this one again last night, because it smells so lovely dry that I was having a hard time believing I’d disliked it so much. I used a little more leaf than last time, and made sure there were a few bits of freeze dried strawberry in there. It still smells and tastes a little bit ladybird-ish (I can’t describe it any other way!), but it was an improvement on last time. I actually managed to finish the cup, which is considerably better going. I did get hints of strawberry and a vague sweetness from this, but it’s still not what I was expecting. I’ve bumped the rating up a little to reflect my small improvement, but this one still needs work before I’ll be happy with it. Sugar, maybe? I’ll try that next, anyway.

Attempted a cup hot this morning, and found it to be a major fail. For some reason, all I’m getting is that odd smell ladybirds seem to make. Moved swiftly on to the pitcher of this I had cold-brewing in the fridge. The scent is better this time — definitely strawberry. I’m not over keen on the taste, though — there’s still something about it that’s making me think of ladybirds. I get strawberry, just about, but it’s then taken over by this odd flavour that I can’t describe. It’s not rum, or lime, it’s just…odd. It’s better cold brewed than hot, so that’s definitely how I’ll be drinking the rest of the pouch. I’ll try again at some point, but at the moment it’s not a winner with me, unfortunately.

Ladybirds! That’s bizarre.

Other reviews for this honey bush seem spot on but my palate is unable to identify which is rum flavoring and which is lime which sounds odd. The lime, as I can tell smells more lime peel than juice. I can taste occasional flashes of sweetness which I’m guessing comes from freeze-dried strawberries. I am definitely returning to leaving another note when I try this again. Not sure if honeybush coldsteeps well. I chose this tea because all of a sudden had a craving for a strawberry white so I am considering buying the Strawberry Mint Julep White.

drank Pumpkin Pie Flavored Black by 52teas
1040 tasting notes

With all the talk of autumn in the forum, I went deep into my stash and came up with this one.
Dry leaf smells like pumpkin pie – I was really excited. Not sure what steeping paramters I should be using – I think I’ve heard that 52teas black blends do better at a lower temp – so I did just over tsp/8oz 95C for 3ish minutes. This is not pumpkin pie. This is chai made with pumpkin pie spice. All I get are the spices and while I kind of like how it goes together it doesn’t really live up to the name. I did splash a little milk in hoping to get some of the creaminess of pie. All in all this did not live up to expectations.
Does anyone have steep parameter recommendations for this? I really want to like this and it does have potential……

and just as quickly as this tea arrives in my mail box it is gone with our youngest. sigh. truth be told i mostly got it for him anyway… i was snooping to see what 52teas was releasing this week while he was hanging around and he was very enthusiastic.

i did get A cup of it though, lol. nice and smooth. a strong but not overpowering rootbeer taste. awesome with cream and sugar. i HAD planned on trying it iced, then maybe a straight cold steep…. ah well, i’ll pick my son’s brain when he’s back!

I was saving this tea to try for when I finally had some time to chill. I’ve been so busy with work and getting my Comic Con costumes ready. But I’m so excited for it :D
This tea is just silly. It has a nice fruity and sweet white tea base with nice notes of (you guessed it) banana and grape. The dominate flavor to me is the grape with banana lingering in the aftertaste. The flavors are more on the candy side but light enough to where you can catch the white tea in action. I like this tea because it is different. Banana and grape are never in the same boat.. Which is disappointing becuase their obviously good friends!

Tea #5 from Travelling Tea Box C

I wanted to like this one more. The dry leaf smells really tasty, and the idea just sounds like something I should love.

I only really tasted the oats and black base. The oatmeal flavor was true and definitely had kind of a simultated heartiness that stuck. I didn’t get much in the way of either maple or brown sugar. There’s a sweet note at the tail of each sip, but it’s immediately followed by some astringency that I really wasn’t expecting and didn’t care for. I also think the base was too strong for something that needed to be more subtle.

I tried adding maple syrup as a way to sweeten and add mapley goodness, but it only added sweetness and made the base a little metallic almost.

The bowl of actual maple and brown sugar I made after drinking this tasted better.

This was the last of what I had of this, and I don’t know how I missed how creamy feeling and buttery this was before! Definitely sad to see this go.

Tea #4 from Traveling Tea Box C

So. The last time I tried drinking a tea named after a liquored drink, I was sorely disappointed in that it tasted nothing like an Appletini. So here I am with something named after a Grasshopper, which is another tasty drink that a swap of would be awesome, because cross-my-heart I’m not an alcoholic.

I brewed up a cup of this for Fiance and I (Because he asked! My tea clutches are sinking in.) and found that this tea nails a grasshopper surprisingly well. It’s more complex for sure (and obviously not quite the same), but the concept translated really well.

The honeybush (which I just learned I like so much more than rooibos) has a slightly spicy bite, and overall almost almond-y flavor and ends sweet, which ties in well with the creamy sweetness of the chocolate and vanilla smoothness. The mint is bright, but not overwhelming.

I could totally see this making an excellent latte. Or undoing the lack of alcohol by making it a latte with some Godiva White Chocolate Liqueur. That would probably be amazing.

There’s probably enough in the bag yet for 2-3 cups (that I may or may not share with Fiance) so I’m yoinking this out of the box. :)

This is the best 52 teas blend I’ve had so far. The strawberry is nice. I like the combo of peppermint and spearmint. And however he gets the bourbon flavor is pretty yummy.

drank Mai Tai Green Tea by 52teas

Another sip down of the day. The dry leaves smells like cocktail lime juice. Prepared using 1tsp per 6 oz in 175F water for 1.5 mins brought about a medium brown liquid with a green and orange tinge. Brewed, the lime smell still stands out. The greens on this tea melds well together. Without sweetener, the lime taste lingers. After adding a little bit of rock sugar, the lime became a bit milder, and it added a small hint of orange to the mix. I will have to try this iced next time.

Good when resteeped. Lime a tad bit milder, but the greens are still very good.

Ok, so I don’t have the most sensitive palate, so this tasting note might be a little confusing. So right when I opened up the packet, I definitely had a punch in the face of minty chocolate kind of like an Andes mint but mintier. After that first burst of smell, there was this lingering smell that I did not care for. The tea itself also starts off with a burst of mint flavor followed by some chocolate-y notes and then an aftertaste that tastes like that lingering smell. It might be the cacao nibs, some other flavoring in the tea, or the type of black tea maybe. Anyone have ideas?

Anyway, I like the initial smell/taste of the mint, but that aftertaste is kinda bugging me. We’ll see what happens with this one.

drank Browncoat Genmaicha by 52teas
180 tasting notes

Second tea of the day. My first genmaicha experience. I actually enjoyed the taste of rice in tea. Probably because I love rice and I grew up eating rice with everything. It does have a slight ‘burnt’ or toasted rice taste which I actually love, but hubby is not crazy about it. Toasted rice, buttery popcorn, nutty and chocolatey. This drink definitely made me want to explore genmaicha more.

drank All Citrus by 52teas

I unfortunately made the mistake of putting honey in this tea without tasting it plain first. Lesson learned: honey in black tea does not suit my taste. I will not be rating this tea at this time, nor will I describe the taste. I do, however, love the strong citrus smell of the dry leaves, a good combination of lemon and lime overtones with an orange undertone. The lemongrass adds a very nice touch. While each scent is strong in their own right, none is overpowering.
