dry – smells like butter and syrup
while brewing – that bready note comes in and really does remind me of pancakes on the griddle :-)
steeped – gorgeous color like dark maple syrup, and still smells like pancakes! Can smell the black tea base too. Surprisingly, I’m getting a bit of bitterness like it’s overbrewed at only 3 min :( It does remind me a bit of the crispy edges of a slightly overdone pancake. I added 1/4 tsp pure maple syrup, which toned down the bitter note, but overshadowed the flavors a bit. Then I added 1tsp milk which seemed to smooth things out.
I will have to try less time/lower temp and see what that does. Overall it’s not a bad morning cuppa and I think I’ll grow to love it.

Based on the tasting notes I’ve been reading recently, the consensus seems to be that the sweet spot for 52teas’ black tea blends is 2-2.5 minutes with boiling water. This blend sounds so yummy! I reckon I would have to try it sweetened with maple syrup, too. =)

Sil

Nik’s got it right… A bit lower than boiling and aim for 2mins, gradually upping if you find it a bit weak.

Alright. I was thinking about this one last night so I figured it was time to give it another try.

Great big heaping 1/2 tablespoon. boiling water, steeped for 10 minutes. Still having issues :(

I can kind of get cheesecake, and a little chocolate, but no peanut butter.

At least honeybush is more drinkable than rooibos. So it’s not all that bad to drink but I wish I could taste the peanut butter cup!

Glad this one wasn’t the best tea ever, because it haunted me after I didn’t buy it and it sold out. It sounds like it should pretty much be the mother of all dessert teas.

Well to finish the disappointing trifecta of a night, of course I taste nothing but honeybush in this tea.

I bought a set of 5 James Bond movies, used for like $30 on Amazon, THROUGH Amazon at that, not another seller. Here I am looking forward to watching Tomorrow Never Dies…and the menu is skipping. I take it out and clean it…only for it to not be able to read the disc completely.

I made popcorn to go with this and it tastes like stale olive oil. I JUST used this same olive oil days ago in cooking so what gives.

And then finally, this tea. I know, maybe it’s just in need of a bit more time, but I made an entire teapot for movie watching, and all I can taste is honeybush. I tried sweetening it, and it improved nothing. So I stuck the infuser basket back in. It steeped for a long time while I was busy making terrible popcorn.

I’m guessing maybe this bag was actually from a reblend and not from when it first came out? Didn’t bother to think of that. Well, in that case, I wish I had only made a cup first :/

I even tried putting the basket back in the tea pot and letting it sit for nearly 20 minutes more and there’s a little chocolatey taste now, but I will have to try again far later I think.

And now I’m going to go sulk some more.

Southern Boy Teas

Can I ask how much tea you used and how much water? This makes me sad.

momo

I used about 4 tsp and I’m not sure on the water, I just measured 14 oz left in it so maybe 18 oz? At most 20, so 4.5 – 5 oz per tsp of tea roughly. It smells good though so I will try more patience…kind of hard with the picture on the bag though. Don’t be sad, now I feel worse and I’m going to have to go spill a shaken martini on that DVD.

Southern Boy Teas

I prefer mine dirty and neat. Did you get the water up to a full rolling boil?

MegWesley

Sounds like you are having a rough night. Don’t worry. It will get better and you will have a better relaxing night.

momo

Yep, water was boiling for a good 30 seconds too because I was still getting everything ready.

Thanks, Meg, I am feeling better because returning the DVD set = $30 back so at least that’s a decent positive haha.

QueenOfTarts

Sorry about your night!

I also bought some of this tea and couldn’t taste any of the flavors.

Kittenna

I’m fairly certain that the bag I ordered was also from a re-blend, as I wavered on it for a while :( Here’s hoping you have tired tastebuds or something, although I’m worried that QueenOfTarts felt the same way…

drank Caramel Apple Oolong by 52teas

I should probably give this more time to meld but I don’t care, caramel apple! I have been waiting for this since it was posted!

It probably does need more time, this is one dark oolong. Definitely not something I would normally drink. When I saw Fujian, I was thinking a regular tie guan yin but this has a pretty dark brew…actually it resembles caramel very much.

I can taste the caramel apple underneath the oolong though, but the oolong is pretty woody with some honey. As much as I wouldn’t like it normally, it seriously works with caramel apple.

Even with just 2 weeks since this was probably blended the apple flavor just tastes so good. It really lingers after each sip too. I can’t wait to try it again in a few weeks…it may change my mind about roasted oolongs!

Sil

Bah! You’re going to make me regret not getting this….I didn’t cause its an oolong….

MegWesley

That sounds delicious.

KallieBoo!

Gah! I was so mad I missed this. I even tried to order it half asleep at 5 in the morning. It obviously didn’t work so well…

My thoughts are too scattered to review this tea properly. Sipping at my desk, watching the relatively insignificant wind and rain we’re getting in central nc. Wishing every one of my friends and family members in md, pa, and nyc were as far out of the path of real danger as we are. In fact i wish they were all right here safely under my roof. I need to stop looking at all the news and finish my work. Stay safe steepsters!

Nice black tea for sipping with milk and sugar – sadly I do not get even a hint of butterscotch flavour. bwa?

Will be swapping this one day! :)

Spice, chocolate & chai? How can a sweets addict, chai loving, spicy food adoring girl not get this tea? Man tea my bum, move on over mama wants her spicy chocolate!

This smells like a typical chai, I always love when you can see all the spices. Mmmm & I can see the peppers. Num Num.

What the? The picture on the package says a touch of cayenne pepper. A touch? It’s more like a touch of chai & chocolate & MAJOR peppers.
Wow this is spicy, I really wasn’t expecting so much kick. It really is a punch in the mouth. I love spicy foods, but this, may just be too spicy for a beverage. I don’t even know if I can taste anything other than the spice.

This would probably be really great mixed with hot chocolate or another chocolate tea.
I have to leave this without a rating for now until I can decide how I feel about it.

This one’s best with sweetener and milk, in my opinion. Tames the spice a little.
