drank S'mores Genmaicha by 52teas

I rated this 46 last time I tried it, which I think was a bit harsher than I’d give it now.

It just tastes like genmaicha to me, maybe with a slight hint of sweetness. This sample is super old, but I never got any chocolate out of it. Just disappointing, more than anything else.

I will bump the rating to 50, because that’s how you rate something that’s totally mediocre.

Hm.

Well, now that I’m 100% on what a regular genmaicha tastes like I feel a bit more qualified to comment on this.

So, first off I am definitely getting a bit of a weird chemical taste to this, it seems to leave some kind of bitterness in my mouth after the fact.

I can taste a hint of sweetness from the marshmallow, and from what I recall of the Marshmallow Treat there is a noticeable (but not dramatic) chocolatey-ness to this one. I’ve never had a lapsang souchong before but I feel like if I try really really hard I can grab some kind of faint smokiness.

Ultimately, I wanted so badly to truly enjoy this but the weird aftertaste is killing my tea buzz.

Thank you for sending some my way though, Kittenna, I had really wanted to try this!

I’m left wondering if the icky chemical flavour has to do with the possible wonky batch of this tea? Who knows. I didn’t hate it but it was distracting.

I didn’t really know what to expect from this tea but I like it. It’s sweet, minty, and delicious. I’m glad I ordered some :)

It smells nice, like these coconut sweets I’m fond of. I don’t get much cheesecake flavour, it is more like coconut cream pie.

I’m a big fan of both cardamom and lemon, so I was very excited to try this blend out. The dry leaves smell mostly of lemon with a hint of cardamom. The smell is wonderful! I caught myself sniffing the bag more than was probably appropriate.

I got three good steeps out of this tea (adding 30s each time). The chun mee base is smooth and blends with the lemon and cardamom beautifully. The citrus components of the flavor were the strongest. I really wish I could taste more cardamom. It’s very subtle, but still nice. I might try throwing in some extra cardamom the next time I make this tea.

I like to throw extra cardamom pods in when I make chai, too :)

Just a quick follow up note.

I steeped this one for 3 minutes this time and it seems like that is the sweet spot for me. It was maple-y goodness immediately. I didn’t have to wait for it to cool down. I felt like I got more of the marigold (which I think gives it a cake-y, pastry type taste). It also tasted much smoother and creamier, like there was a giant gob of butter on that stack of pancakes.

I am enjoying this blend a lot more than I thought I would.

So happy that Frank decided to reblend this one. Super excited to get my hands on a pack of this tea.

The dry tea is very strongly maple syrup. I did get a bit of an alcohol smell, like alcohol swab. But I had previously read some posts and comments on this and other 52 teas blends, and this seems to be the norm. Alcohol is used to help perfuse flavours in the blends.

After brewing, the tea mostly just smelled like a black tea. But as is started to cool I got a delicious pankcake and maple syrup smell.

The tea tastes like black tea with a base of sweet, slightly buttery maple syrup. There may be notes of a pastry or cake type base. I would definitely say it does taste like a pancake breakfast, but overall the taste is very light.

It tastes more and more pancake as it cools.

I only brewed this for 2 minutes, as is my norm for most black teas. I see that many other people brewed for 3 minutes or longer. I will try that next time to see if it brings out more flavour.

Yum, this is one I’ve been meaning to try still. :) I should order some soon while it’s available.

It has been a while since I’ve reviewed anything, but I look a small break from tea. I have so many to try now that I cannot wait to get into everything! I won’t be trying them all at once though. Anyhow, on the the review!

I’ve been wanting to try this tea for a while now and was so excited when I got the chance to sample it! I do not have any blueberries in the sample I received, but I am definitely okay with that. The scent is pretty strong with blueberry. I am enjoying this tea. The blueberry is not overpowering, but I am not getting much of the buttery/tangy notes that many others have mentioned.

Overall, I am happy to have finally tried this tea and will continue to enjoy it. Maybe the other notes will show up in another cup. Thank you Lindsey for the more than generous sample!

This is a pretty interesting blend. The dry leaves smell a lot like grape flavoring, but not in a cough syrupy kind of way. I didn’t really detect the vinegar notes that other reviewers have mentioned. To me, the taste is somewhere grape juice and wine. The grape flavor is really bold, but there’s a very slight acidity that reminds me more of wine.

ETA: I re-steeped this for 3 minutes, but then got called into an unexpected meeting. I enjoyed this at room temperature after I got back. The wine flavor is definitely stronger after it cooled off.

Big thanks to KittyLovesTea for the sample!

Special thanks to Liberteas for a but of this! I LOVED it! A smooth ‘jelly’ or ‘jam’ like Apricot and creamy smooth cheesecake flavor paired with just the perfect amount of white tea! Masterpiece!

I had this one for breakfast yesterday, mixed with a little of Della Terra’s Blueberry Crumble. YUM. This is a great blend, I might drink it like this from now on.

However, this tea on it’s own makes for a much better cup of breakfast tea. Together, they take on the dessert-y flavor that Della Terra is better known for.

This is so blueberry-y! This is more the kind of blueberry flavor I was expecting from Blueberry Crumble, but did NOT get. I can see this tea being fantastic in the morning, it just feels like breakfast.

I don’t get a whole lot of pastry or cream cheese flavor when it’s hot, but as it cools those notes are coming out a bit more. I added a splash of almond milk to the end of my last cup, and I do think that enhanced the danish part a bit more.

Second steep is still very flavorful, and with a toned-down berry flavor, it has a bit more of the pastry kind of taste I was expecting.

I think this one might actually be really good mixed with Blueberry Crumble…

I agree it tastes more like breakfast rather than a rich dessert tea.

I’ve been drinking comfort teas a lot this past week, and this has become one of them. It’s so sweet but refreshing and light all at the same time. Such a unique tea, I love these mint / marshmallow root blends from 52teas. I think I will go have some more, because it resteeps beautifully.

Word, I’m appreciating marshmallow root too! Whatever happened to Hyperbole and a Half?

Mitch

mint and marshmallow? that sounds awesome!

I’ve got lots, Mitch, if you want to swap. I’d gladly take more Candy Cane off your hands. :P

Yum, yum, yum.

I think I prefer White Christmas, but I am loving this blend, as well. It’s a bit sweeter, since it has spearmint instead of peppermint, but the mint is still a subtle, refreshing flavor. It does have the same wonderful creaminess that White Christmas has, and I am a fan of the green tea base.

The only sad part about these lovely 52teas blends is that I can’t order them whenever I want them. Pout.

Everybody loves this tea SO MUCH. My goodness. So obviously when the chance came I snapped it up.

Now I guess reading all the high ratings skewed my expectations of this a bit. I expected this just the best freaking tea ever. XD As it is, its good but it needs milk and sugar to be at its best, and I’m not sure how to feel about that. Overall extremely delicious and glad I ordered it, just wish I liked it more plain.

Blueberry goodness! I keep wanting to try other tea companies (I’ve had my eye on Butiki Teas for months now), but every time I’m poised to place an order with them, Frank comes up with something else I just can’t resist. The thing is, I’ve never been disappointed with a 52teas order, so it’s just too hard to break the ordering cycle. I’m hooked!

This tea has a nice balance of flavors between the tea and the blueberries. The smell, the taste, ahhh…so unmistakably blueberries! I’m not sure if I’m getting cream cheese, but I do get a bit of the Danish taste at the end of the sip, particularly when the tea cools a bit. Maybe if I play with the water temperature a tad I will get more of that cream cheese taste? Even as I made it – it’s delicious!

Fiddling

You won’t ever be disappointed with Butiki either. :)

I missed this tea on its initial release and was happy I got my hands on some added stock. Typically I am not one to fond over Rooibos teas as I find that they have a woodsy aftertaste however this tea uses a green rooibos which doesn’t tend to have this aftertaste and has more of a fruity note. This makes for a perfect canvas with this blend of lush raspberries and bergamont. A fresh natural flavor of raspberry is at the forefront of this blend which is followed by the smooth bergamont and citrus finish. I just received this today and have only tried it brewed hot but I have feeling this would be wonderful over ice – and can’t wait to try it.

drank Butter Rum by 52teas

This has been one of my morning go to teas lately for taking to work. It’s yummy but I swear I there was more butterscotch flavor in my first pouch. Hmmm…maybe I’m doing something differently? In any case, I’m clearly still enjoying this tea because I have a pouch on standby, and I just reordered another one. For me it will remain a cupboard staple at least until Frank reblends some of my other toffee or butterscotch or caramel favorites.

I love this tea. It’s sweet and satisfying and it’s another one that tastes best when made with water heated just to the point where it is still sippable (not boiling). This reduces the wait time from when I start making it, to the point where I can enjoy it. The perfect remedy for my morning case of the “gimmeteanows”.

I took this to today’s meeting/errands in my stainless steel travel mug and it was the perfect accompaniment to a fantastic day.

It was supposed to be sunny. The weatherman was wrong again (for most of the day), but interjecting sips of hot butter-caramel-like flavor into a gray cloudy day seems to make it all seem better. The only thing I struggled with was trying not to say “mmm….this is good” after every sip. I finished my pouch of this today, but I thankfully have another one on standby. It’s a good thing too, I start a new work position on Monday, so I foresee many more morning cases of the “gimmeteanows” in my near future.

Rie

Good luck with work on Monday~!

I don’t see DAVIDs buttered rum in your cupboard, have you tried it? If you have, care to compare the two for me? I wondered if I should buy the 52tea version. But I love DAVIDs so at this point I am not in a hurry.

canadianadia

Thanks Rie :)

@Nxtdoor- I tried Davids buttered rum several months ago so I will try to do a bit of a comparison from memory. First off, I should warn you that I believe I’ve developed a preference for 52teas black base over Davids black tea base. From what I remember of the Davids version the taste of both the tea and the additional flavors are lighter and have different notes like vanilla blended into the buttered rum taste. It’s good, but I would describe it as more watered-down in comparison to the 52teas version. However, that could be the result of what I got in my scoop, or maybe I did something wrong?

In my opinion, the 52teas version is deeper, richer, and I feel the notes in it lean more towards the caramel side. Because of the depth of flavors I do find that perfecting the 52teas black teas can be a bit of an art, and one slip can turn the tea bitter. Using the appropriate amount of leaf and making sure that the water is not too hot can really make or break their black teas. The Davids teas tend to be more forgiving, but they just rarely get a “wow” out of me.

Having said this, if you tend to prefer the DAVIDS black base you may have a completely different opinion to mine. The good thing about Davids is if you buy straight from the store (rather then from their website) you can buy a small sample size of 15-20grams for about $3ish and some change. 52teas can be a little trickier to time when it’s in stock, and there is less flexibility in size.

I hope my little comparison helps? I look forward to hearing what you think, if/when you try one or even both of them.

I should know better than to tear into a pack of 52teas without letting it cure, but the sheer excitement that I experienced when my latest order arrived was enough to make me fear my head might implode. The black base is solid and the Butter Rum flavor is complimentary in its flavorful sweetness. Kind of hmmm…butterscotchy? I’ve never had butter rum, nor have I ever tried butter rum lifesavers, so butterscotch is the closest thing that I’ve tried that I can compare it to. Me likes me butterscotch!

Speaking of butterscotch, have you seen that episode of How I Met Your Mother where Barney says that butterscotch is to Canadian women what chocolate is to American women? Are we really known for loving butterscotch so much? I’ve never heard that before. Perhaps that’s just made up for comedic effect? That show and it’s Canadian quips always crack me up. Gotta love Robin’s music video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IY_bhVSGKEg Hahaha! so ridiculous, it’s funny

Anyhooo….I digress….shocking, I know :P

This tea is good, and I’m certain that I’m going to like it even more as time passes… assuming that I can hold off on drinking it all so it can cure a little longer? It’s a good thing I ordered a variety of new (to me) 52teas to try so I can distract myself away from this one. I’ll definitely have to Hansel and Gretel myself away from this one by making a trail of other teas away from it…hey look! Blueberry Cream Cheese Danish! Mmm…that sounds delicious! …I think I need another mouth.

I better stop procrastinating and get back to cleaning and cooking. The designer is coming over this evening for the design kick off meeting, and the house is looking disheveled. I’m super excited though, and I don’t think it’s just the caffeine :D

Ze_Teamaker

I have never heard the Butterscotch thing either. Must be for comedic effect. Also I love the ending to that episode.

Another backlog – this was my last cup at work yesterday in my color changing mug. Whatever I did to this tea, it was absolutely amazing yesterday. Soo marshmallowy, so creamy! No idea what the water temp was, or even amount of tea as I didn’t have my usual spoon. Ah well, it was tasty! See previous notes.
