mmmm maple tea! I had this one first for a comparison against the next tea – I wanted to see how the new tea i picked up compares to stacy’s take on maple pecan. Not that the other tea is pecan…but the maple part should be ok to compare against. I’m almost out of this one, so a reorder may need to happen in the near future. I need to get through a few more teas first though! haha
Afternoon tea as I’m starting to fade a bit here at work. I needed a sweet delicious pick me up to get me through the afternoon meetings. I really enjoy the balance of maple and pecan that stacy’s managed to capture. :) This will be a tea to get me through the winter for sure!
I have some of this on its way, can’t wait! after the sample I had, it easily made my shopping list! It’s hard to believe how close it is to real pecan and maple taste!
@teafairy i totally agree! i tried the sample that stacy so nicely sent me and then promptly ordered 2oz to see how far through the fall/winter it would take me, and even still i keep hoarding it when i know i’m not even through my first ounce! lol
I highly suggest folks try this if they like maple pecan as a flavour :) And this coming from ME! who isn’t a fan of oolongs! :)
Talking about this tonight made me bust out this tea and make some. As the only oolong I’ve liked thus far on my tea journey, adding the maple just kicked it out of the park. I LOVE the maple AND pecan taste that Stacy has captured. This is a fantastically wonderful fall tea. Oh yes….yes yes and yes!
aaaaand that concludes the last of that sample from stacy! Good thing i just placed an order with her to pick up more of this AND the grapefruit dragonwell so that I can do a taste comparision :) I really enjoy this one. Maple cookie delicious goodness!
So I have to say…Hats off to Stacy! I have not had much luck with oolongs lately – there’s always this weird taste that pokes through the flavouring and makes me cringe. While my sample isn’t quite what the final product landed on since stacy was kinda enough to toss in a sample for me of the pre-final version, i’m certain that the final version is as amazing! I tried this right after the grapefruit tea sample that stacy provided (tasting note on that later omg) and so my mouth was in citrusy heaven. I had absentmindly picked up my tea for a sip while talking to my other half and it shocked me so instantly that i forgot what i was saying as a small “OH!” escaped my lips. I immediately told Ian he had to try it. This blend is superb! I’m not sure what i was expecting when i tried it, but clearly it wasn’t what i was hit with to interupt my thoughts!
There is a creamy delicious maple sweet goodness in this tea that is amazing! I drink all my tea straight, and this is almost too sweet for me – ian even asked if i had put sugar in my tea this time. For those worried about the sweet factor, it’s perfect in this blend to bring together the woodsy, maple tones of the tea.
I will absolutely need to order some of this tea for over the fall/winter. It reminds me of the festival d’hiver that we used to celebrate in school – pouring maple syrup into the snow and rolling it on to the wooden popsicle sticks to make a delicious treat!
My gosh Sil, your reviews!
I’ve been waiting for money to come in forEVER so I can finally place my order with Stacy – your reviews make me wish I could order everything right this second!
Daisy.. i HIGHLY recommend this one and the grapefruit if you are a fan of either maple or grapefruit. Now I love a lot of stacy’s teas…pretty much only the oonlongs have not agreed with me…but THIS! THIS! Ooolong makes me wanna do a happy dance.
Mmmmm how I miss pouring real, fresh maple syrop onto snow and twirling it onto a popsicle stick. This is definetly on my list to order from butiki.
Hmmmm, I’ve never heard of pouring maple onto snow to make a treat before. That sounds kind of interesting. :)
Stacy its wonderful…. Th maple syrup is fresh and hot….youur it into the snow and who
E it’s cooling you’re wrapping it around a Popsicle stick and then it hardens.
Had another cup of this today to try and figure out where i’m feeling with this one. I’m pretty sure I’m done with it, not that i don’t like it but there will always be other stacy teas that i’d rather have in my cupboard. This has a great apricot taste to it, but i don’t think i’m in love with the base. Still, happy to have had it a few times now. :) The rest goes into the tea box!
I’ll have to go back and check and see if i ever tried to cold brew this one. Tried that overnight last night and I am digging this a whole lot. I think i might enjoy this a bit better cold. Added a tiiiinnny bit of sweetner to bring out the apricot flavour and i am a happy girl! The only thing that’s great about working all weekend – acceibility to my tea stash! oh yeah!
Preparation
Mmmmm trying to sort through my teas and figure out where I stand with the teas I have. As a result moving ratings around and trying to figure out what I still love or don’t now that I’ve had a few months of tasting a lot more teas :)
I’m dropping this rating a little, not because I don’t enjoy the tea, but because I’ve found others now (from butiki even) that I love even more than this one. I really like the sweet, earth, apricoty feel of this tea.
I am trying to do the same thing – I have some teas getting to be around 9 months old I need to either decide to keep, or send off, etc.
So I’ve been slacking in the posting department for the past couple of days and that’s likely to continue. I’m guessing i’m going to need to do some serious backlogging when I get back from vacation. I ordered this as part of Butiki’s Summer Sampler before it went away. I love the mango lassi and cantelope and cream so I figured it was a safe bet and a chance to try this one and the almond indulgence (stacy was out of pistachio ice cream so i scored this one instead, which is A-ok by me!). Anyway this is a really nice apricot tea. As is usually the case with stacy’s tea it’s subtle but not lacking. What I like about this tea is the earthy spricot taste that others have commented on. It’s not that artificial taste of apricot that so many drinks try and fail at. Once again, colour me happy with stacy’s wonderful teas
Preparation
Sorry for my absence these past two weeks, I have been very under the weather and generally feeling very low. It’s turning a corner now and I hope to pick up my reviewing where I left off. As for today I’m finishing my beloved Cantaloupe & Cream, it shall be sorely missed though thoroughly enjoyed at my sewing club. I joined last week, something to get me out of the house. I used to cross stitch when I was younger and I picked it right back up, it’s like learning to swim or riding a bike…It’s something you remember and can pick up instantly.
For now I’m getting ready so this was just a quick note to say I’m coming home (so to speak).
Break at work (which today I am working from home) and I have been dreaming about this tea after hearing such good things about it.
Firstly the raw tea looks like something out of a garden, long green reeds with yellow flowers, yet it smells like melon. It’s as though these flowers are magical and come from Neverland.
For the purposes of my first test I have not added any sugar/sweetener.
Colour: Golden yellow
Smell: Exactly like melon
This tea does not disappoint, not only does it smell like melon but it tastes like melon and if I had not known the ingredients I would have thought that this tea is prepared by pouring hot water over a slice of melon. I cannot detect any bitterness or anything that tastes out of place and the more you drink the sweeter the melon becomes.
Another important aspect for me to mention is that the melon tastes natural and not synthetic in any way. I have been trying to taste everything in this tea but I can honestly only taste melon and my head cannot get past that. Melon is my second favourite all time food so for me this literally is heaven in a cup.
Preparation
Oh, I’m so glad you love this one! Isn’t it absolutely amazing?! Did you pick up some of the Watermelon Xylophone too? If not, I think I could pass a cup’s worth on to you.
What could be better than a slice of pumpkin pie? A cup of Pumpkin Creme Brulee to wash it down with that’s what. :)
Oh sacred pumpkin
you taste so yummy
as you slip down
into my tummy
your orange in colour
and full of delights
oh sacred pumpkin
I could drink you all night
Preparation
My husband asked me to pick a tea for him to try (which is a rare thing for him to ask with him being a coffee lover) but I think this one would be something he would enjoy. I did take some sneaky sips though :)
I could taste cinnamon and something spicy yet earthy which may be the pumpkin and the nutmeg combined. An overall lovely chai with very pleasing tastes and nothing over powering. Again I tried this without sugar of any kind.
It becomes spicier the more you drink and has a warming effect which fits perfectly in hand for autumn/fall, it’s as though I have been wrapped up into a blanket.
Shall do a more detailed description at another time but so far so good.
Preparation
My Butiki tea’s arrived this morning after just over a week of waiting in anticipation :) This one was chosen at random by my husband from the big magical box of tea and as soon as I opened the bag the most magical sweet and nutty fragrance filled my nostrils. It resembles a fresh pecan pie and words cannot describe how wonderful it smells. Infact it smells so delicious that my cats have been trying to steal it from me!
This was brewed due to the instructions given and for the first taste test I have not included any sugar or sweetener.
Colour: Gold with brown tinges
First sip: WOW. Second sip: Wowzers! I can detect the pecan nuttiness and the natural sweetness of maple but it doesn’t dominate (which is a huge plus). The oolong is more noticeable about half way down the cup but it blends in very well and only adds to the flavouring instead of taking anything away. A slight citrus is noted too at this point but only very slight, like very subtle lemongrass.
Each sip has the same burst of flavours and it has been a while since I felt this but I will be upset to see this cup come to an end, I could drink gallons of this. I think adding sugar would pro-long the sweetness for those with a sweet tooth but I find the natural sweetness to it enchanting enough.
All I can say is wow, this is my new favourite flavoured Oolong.
Preparation
Thank you Stacy at Butiki for this sample tea!
I didn’t have any tea this morning because I slept in. Luxury!
It’s something I don’t do very often though.
Old
Everyone thinks that one day when they retire, they’ll sleep in every day but it just doesn’t happen that way.
I’ve often wondered how I worked 8 hours a day, managed kids and bills and raking leaves on my own for the 10 years I was a single parent (I worked another 20 years besides that).
I got in a grove for 40 years like a slot car and off I went.
Last night one of my granddaughters said, “When I get to be an old lady, I’m going to have a blast and do all kinds of things with my grand-kids, drink tea like grandma and write music.” That did my heart good. She said that many of her friends say they hate old people.
I’m trying to show how them (and their friends) that getting older can be wonderful.
Most of the people reading these tea reviews (like you) are young. You’re parents or grandparents might be getting older. (Heck, everyone will be old one day.) I’ll tell you this…I’m free to be myself now, more than at any time in my life. Old isn’t bad, it’s a challenge at times and an adjustment. (My peeps landed on the moon, protested for Civil Rights and Woman’s Rights, invented and built the Computer Industry, the Beetles, Rolling Stones, Richard Gere (63) all from oldies. Talk to an oldster sometime. You’d be surprised at what they know.) It’s fantastic in many ways!
Tea Review:
I chose this Butiki sample and was stunned at how wonderful the aroma of the wet leaves were. Savory, roasty and a little floral in a way that matches the best quality Oolongs I’ve tried. Stunning scent…hard for me to pull myself away from the dark moss green leaves.
Taking my first sip I wasn’t disappointed. The roasted flavor was smooth and rich, honey with a little potato mouth-feel thickness.
I remembered that this was the tea made sweet by leaf hoppers chewing on the tea tree leaves forcing the tree to work harder producing new leaves with more sugar in them. (The sweetness was lovely!)
Stacy has noted an apple, raw almond and lightly burned toast flavor…which I thought about for awhile. I could imagine a fragrant yellow apple, home grown…sweet and cold chopped and mixed with a little grilled white pork and sprinkled with some almonds. The meat would have to have some roasty bits from the bottom of the pan.
I get carried away….
Boy this is good tea! An Oolong that doesn’t get astringent, has just enough roasty, floral, fruity flavor too! This is not your average Oolong. It’s substantial!
This Fui Fei Oolong would be a great choice for Fall and Winter.
My hats off to “old” people although I don’t really look at age. I am 37 and most of my friends are 70-80. Makes me sad everytime we have a funeral around here thinking one of my friends could be next!
You might like my little boy grandchildren Amy since they drink tea. One loves Pu-erh. The older girls are not children…15,17,18. Darby, you are in charge of remembering them and carrying on the good lessons. What a nice way to be. I like younger people myself. Old people make me laugh though, we’re funny!
Well Bonnie, don’t know for USA but I’m pretty sure it’s the same everwhere : young people don’t hate old people but they like to do “as if” when they are talking to friends…they feel like rebels doing this (!)
And anyway, we are always the old of another one ! I am 38 and I heard my neighbour of 20 years saying “the old” about me !
Thank you, Stacy for sending me this sample in my latest order!
I steeped this for around 1.5 minutes at 180f per Butiki’s instructions.
First steep: a lightly vegetal, very aromatic brew. I get the sweet, slighly floral scent of honeysuckle coming up in the flavor of this. Slightly spinachy, yes… but not in the same way as a sencha, for instance. The tea has a sweet lingering aftertaste with some vanilla on the palette.
Second steep: ooh, I forgot about this one for a while and I can’t remember how long it was steeping. Now it has definitely gotten brothy, buttery and very floral. it isn’t as sweet as steep #1 but I also let it steep for too long, I think.
3rd Steep: floral notes seem to be retreating slightly and now I am getting a nice, nutty flavor reminiscent of almonds. Still a great light vegetal and brothy flavor too with a bit of sweetness. mmm. I have enjoyed this a lot, thank you Stacy!
Preparation
A very nice mellow tea with sweet honey-coated notes. The brew is light and malty cocoa-like, with an pleasant smoothness. The leaves are definitely of good quality and you you see clearly the 2 leaves and bud after the second infusion. Speaking of the second infusion, it turns more creamy and there is no bitterness that is noticed.
Definitely a anytime kinda tea, but seems very fitting for a first or last cup of the day. Another wonderful treat from Butiki Teas.
Preparation
Tea of the afternoon here – always good to have lots of tea on a rainy day. I did let this steep for a while and it reminds me of pineapple and popcorn flavored Jelly Bellys.
Today I am making a conscious decision to not allow people into my life who are contemptuous and have haughty attitudes or behaviors.
