I was having a conversation with A Gift of Tea earlier this eve – via Twitter – about pomelo-scented black teas. Then I remembered, Oh yeah! I have one!
So…I brewed it up.
Unlike jasmine, honeysuckle, rose congou-ish, or other flower-scented teas, this one had a distinct taste of fruit to go along with the honey-ish lean of the Bai Lin Gong Fu black tea base. It lasted a good four steeps at three minutes each, and the sweetness was thirst-quenching.
In the running for my favorite floral-scented tea.
Flavors: Fruit Tree Flowers, Honey
I have spent most of the day with my face staring at a computer screen. The final project for my class is due next week and there is still a ton of work to be done. Like Lala I have not been feeling the tea lately. Rather than half-heartedly writing a review on a new one I just haven’t tasted much. Today I decided to shake off the tea blues and finish this one. I put care into the preparation but had it mostly because it is the best white peony I have yet tried. I knew I would love it even if I was only half paying attention. Sipped multiple cups – the present one is ice cold from sitting there. It is still awesome.
I went for a short country drive and came back wiped out. Stupid lung/ear/head thingy, I banish thee from the Kingdom!
So I thought this afternoon I’d like something soothing with enough caffeine to help me through the day. This white peony is unquestionably the best looking freshest smelling I have tried. Strangely it is last years harvest. I have noticed some white teas have no expiration date. According to Concept Teas they believe white tea maxes at about 8 years and then slowly degrades.
I prepared this at 190F with 2m steep. To my tastes this is truly incredible. Fresh hay like leafy taste. Light melon notes. Sweet. Lingering. I brewed this the other day with cooler temp (175F). It had a light bite and malty undertones which this cup lacks but this one is surprisingly better. If you love white peony this one is excellent. www.conceptteas.com/
This one is of Fuding, Fujian province origin. Concept teas is a China based company specializing in white tea. This is one of the best looking white peony leaf I have yet encountered. The buds are silver down covered like the best silver needle and surrounded by leaves of green, gray, and olive. The aroma of the dry leaf greets you the moment you open the bag like dew soaked hay. The taste is hay with malty undertones. Mellow, slightly sweet, with a long lingering aftertaste. There is excellent (IMHO) depth to the cup and it only improves as the cup cools. I am really impressed with this one.
Spring 2013 Fuding leaf. Looking at the picture you can see this is exquisite to gaze upon. The dry aroma greets you the moment the bag is open. It is sweet hay. Once steeped the leaf turns shiny pea green with a scent that is vegetal and earthy. The liquor is honey yellow. The sip is sweet, hay and light earthiness. Late in the sip it develops light melon notes. The sweet aftertaste lingers long after the tea is gone. As the cup cooled it took on more of citrus profile that I found appealing. I prepared this in a gaiwan and a press. I preferred the press method. The dance of the leaf enchants me and honestly I thought the flavor was more developed in the press.
