For what this tea is: The black tea base is very Japanese tasting with it’s semi vegetableness still there. The flavoring is a bit weak which I enjoy because earl grey isn’t my favorite, but for a tea it should be a bit stronger.

I did drink this for a few mornings in a row because it is good, but there is still room for improvement.

I think I oversteeped this tea a bit at three minutes, two would have been better. I am getting a fruity note, followed by some malt and a little astringency. Overall this is a good tea. It would be worth buying again but I probably won’t because there are some thirty five straight Japanese blacks that I want to try from Yunuomi that would take priority.

I steeped this one time in a Glass Teavana Perfect Tea Maker/Gravity Steeper with 3 tsp leaf and 200 degree water for 3 min.

Flavors: Astringent, Fruity, Malt

Bought this tea in my recent Yunomi order, picked it basically at random as I knew nothing about their black teas. It is quite tasty. The main note to this tea is malt, but not overpowering malt. I added only sugar to this tea but I think for those who like milk in black tea this one would go well. There is a sweetness behind the malt as well. Overall I would rate this tea quite highly. It is the first Japanese black tea I have tried. It does seem to be a high quality tea. I brewed it western style this morning.

I brewed this tea once in a Teavana Glass Perfect Tea Maker/Gravity Steeper with 3 tsp leaf and 200 degree water for 3 min. It might benefit from a shorter steep.

Interesting. From your description, it sounds more like a breakfast tea from Sri Lanka or India than a Chinese black tea. Would you agree with this?

That is fairly accurate, but a little lighter bodied than a breakfast tea from Sri Lanka. The malt flavor was quite subdued. I am not partial to overly malty teas and I really liked this.

I’ll be interested to see if this is the trend for most of the black teas. I read that at least one of their farmers travels to Sri Lanka regularly to learn more about black tea production.

If you’re interested, I emailed Ian to ask about this and here’s what he said:

Most of the Japanese blacks available through us are made with Japanese cultivars in the style of Sri Lankan or Indian black tea. But they are much milder…less astringency, lighter like light oolong with the flavor of black.

The reason is that plant cultivated varieties for black tea have more catechin. This catechin converts into tannin as the tea leaf oxidizes, so green tea has more catechin. But green tea, to avoid being too bitter, generally uses leaves with less catechin. So when you make black tea with green tea cultivars, the flavor is lighter.

I usually enjoy my black teas more on the weaker side.

My parameters: 95 °C/300 ml/5 g/20 sec; up to 3 infusions

This tea is a mix of twisted and broken leaves with some larger stem pieces. When infused they all became mushy.
Despite the short steeping time this tea was full bodied and intensive. The taste was mellow and sweet with subtle aroma of musky and malt. No bitterness or astringency.

This is the other tea from my Yunomi order. It was the next flavor I wanted to try after tasting and liking Creha’s grape-flavored black tea. I love these cute little tins! Each flavor has its own unique art on the front. The tea itself is extremely dark brown, almost black, and the stems have a lovely red hue. Mm, it smells so good! Creamy and rich, like that chestnut cream spread/filling that you can buy in jars or tubes. I also smell a touch of chocolate and vanilla.

The aroma of the steeped tea reminds me of good vanilla extract – creamy and sweet with a strong wood note. This tea has an amazingly creamy texture and flavor. The chestnut flavor reminds me of sweet pastries filled with cream and chestnut paste, possibly topped with sliced almonds. The base tea itself is quite mild, somewhat woody with a touch of musty hay. There’s a touch of mild bitterness near the end of the sip, but I think that’s actually a good thing, it helps cut through all the richness in the flavoring. This would be fantastic with milk and sugar or as a latte.

Sipdown (127)!

Thank you Cameron B.! I’ve seemed to really, really enjoy grape teas as of late which is surprising because I’m so anti-raisin, which is used in a lot of “Grape” tea. This sipdown was done as a cold brew, though I’d have been interested in trying it hot too.

It tasted really, really good! Like a fancier/darker Grape Kool-Aid? You know, sweet and very “purple” (not red, sorry) but not abundantly artificial/chemical. There was maybe a touch of a red wine/boozey quality that made it feel a little more “adult” but no, mostly I just enjoyed slurping back big sips of Kool Aid tea.

I don’t know much about this company other than what I read in Cam’s tasting note for this tea – but they sound like one I’d be curious in exploring a little more. I was really impressed with this blend when I had sort of just dismissed it based on the name alone…

Yay, I’m so excited! I’ve been wanting to try Creha’s flavored Japanese black teas ever since I found them on Yunomi. They have a number of unique (and classic) flavors and most of them sound amazing. Unfortunately, they don’t offer sample sizes of these teas, and most of them are around $17 for 50g. So when I built up a bunch of rewards points by writing reviews, I knew exactly what I wanted to spend them on! First of all, this canister is freaking adorable! And I love the unique artwork on the front (this art is different for each flavor). The tea itself was packaged in a cellophane bag inside the tin, which is a nice extra layer of freshness. The leaves look whole and quite pretty, they’re a bit curly and very dark in color with some reddish spots. The flavoring is definitely very powerful in the dry scent (mostly because it was just opened). It reminds me of grape soda, and there’s an alcoholic edge because it’s so strong. Hopefully the scent mellows a bit over time.

Happily, the steeped tea does not have an overpowering grape aroma, and there’s no trace of alcohol. It smells lovely and sweet, and I can detect the black tea’s aroma as well. Yum, I actually quite like this. I admit, it’s definitely an artificial grape flavor, but I don’t mind that with the black tea. There is the teensiest hint of bitterness in the beginning of the sip, so perhaps this one needs a slightly lower water temperature or shorter time. Otherwise the base tea is very smooth and mellow, and tastes mildly of bread and malt. There’s also a little bit of creamy honey and some hay notes. It’s quite good, and I bet this would be amazing iced.

Sipdown, 141. Thanks to Yunomi.us for this free sample of a Japanese black tea.

As with my other sample from Yunomi, this sample was composed largely of tiny tea pieces and a lot of dust. I filtered out a lot of the dust before brewing. I also was cautious with my steeping parameters out of fear of it going bitter on me.

Steeped, it smells remarkably like the Taiwanese black tea I had recently. Very fruity, sweet, with a honeyed mead-like note. It smells pretty good considering I am not usually one for fruity black teas. However, I took a sip and you should have seen the horrific face I made. This is perhaps the most bitter tea I have ever had the displeasure of putting in my mouth. The extreme of bitter. It may be the most bitter thing I have ever tried. The bitterness is still lingering in the recesses of my mouth, coating my tongue. As it’s fading it kind of reminds me of grapefruit rind, but worse. I will not be taking another sip. I do think this may be more to do with the low quality of the sample rather than the tea itself, but I will never know.

Yeah I think it was exacerbated by the huge difference in smell versus taste. I feel like I can often “smell” bitterness in a tea, but not in this one!

I bought a 1.41 oz tin of this same tea and found the same flavors, but no bitterness. It wasn’t that flavorful to me. I liked it well enough, but won’t order again. I think you’re right that the sample was the issue.

Sipdown, 147. So, Yunomi.us has a thing where you can request free samples for review. You can select two teas, and they do warn you that requests are not guaranteed and they may substitute a similar tea in its place. Fair enough. I requested two black teas because I am curious about Japanese black teas, so I chose two that sounded most interesting (based on the limited descriptions) and sent off my request. I didn’t notice at first that I got neither of the teas I requested. One was a different first flush black tea; I am satisfied with that substitution. The other was this tea. I would not consider banana flavored black tea to be similar to unflavored black tea other than the fact that they both contain black tea. Also, of all the flavors they could have sent me, I happen to hate banana flavoring (I barely like bananas themselves), so this may backfire on them. I know they couldn’t have known that, but they could have played it safer and sent a different unflavored black tea. Also, whether due to international shipping in a flat envelope or initial packaging, this sample was mostly dust, which isn’t promising. (Note that I did just get samples from Teavivre in a flat envelope and the Oriental Beauty oolong in that was not crushed to bits).

The dry leaf smells like banana candy, not shockingly. The steeping instructions provided give a time (2.5 minutes) but not a leaf to water ratio or a temp, so I guessed. I was scared of the tea dust, so I gave it a cooler temp. After one minute the liquor was already very dark, so I pulled the brew basket. Now it smells like banana candy with a slightly grounding background of black tea, but I can’t make out enough beyond the banana flavoring to tell much about it.

Yup, it tastes like banana runts. You know the little fruit-shaped candies, each with a different flavor, and there were the little yellow banana guys? I never see runts around anymore. Although someone did have to use them in an episode of Cutthroat Kitchen recently. Anyway, it tastes like banana runts. And a hint of black tea, mostly coming through as a slight punch of bitterness in the back. I do think that if I liked the type of flavoring used here, I might like the tea itself. But I’ll never really know, I guess. Oh well, hopefully the other tea I got will turn out better.

I haven’t had this tea inawhile – I forgot how yummy this one is! Its creamy, chestnutty, roasty, and a little sweet. A perfect cup while I work on my knitting. I think I’ll be keeping this in permastock!

Sounds delicious! Looking at their selection, this is one of those retailers that I wish would offer smaller packages or a sampler. A lot of these flavors sound amazing but I’m not likely to pay upward of $12 to try them. :(

I think my tea stash is out of control. I’m forgetting that I own some things, but more often I can’t find things. After my vacation, I’m going to work on doing some chalk board labels on the tins.
I wanted a black blend, though i can’t remember which one I wanted and where it was. This cute tin was in the front, so it met one of the criteria of being a black blend.

Yum, so smoooth! I love chestnut and there’s something so differently flavored about Japanese tea blends. Next Yunomi order I’m getting another flavor.

Yum! This tea is super creamy tasty! Lots of chestnut flavor (moreso on the pastry filling side than actual roasted chestnut) and a hint of cocoa flavor! The japanese black tea is also the star – it’s light and woody, quite different than other black teas out there.

Deadly is this tea has other flavors that I want to try – Strawberry, Grape, Peach, Sakura and Yuzu.
