It was nice to wake up with this today! Taking a kettle to school has made everything taste so much better. You can only do so much with the microwave!

I’ve been keeping the tin of this tea at work, but I had to bring it home over the weekend for it to take its place in the Battle of the Earl Greys. Our next couple bouts should happen Saturday and Sunday, and my goal is to begin the second round!

My tasting note was just eaten :(

I’m not rating this tea, because I had a very strange experience with it. I made it up in our small teapot, and with the first cup I was in love. It was balanced and smooth and wonderful.

I wasn’t expecting its evil twin for a second cup. I had removed the infuser basket on time, but something must have continued to happen, because the second cup was bitter and bracing and just plain horrible.

While I finish up the rest of the 50g package (the smallest they sell on their website) I’m going to try to only make single-serving batches which will be enjoyed hot and quickly… hopefully I’ll only see the nice side of this tea, and not the nasty!

Another tea from The Traveling Tea Box that I am just now getting to. I didn’t know what to expect from the first sip, because the dry leaves smell like artificial root beer, while the tea’s aroma is of spicy cinnamon with a hint of vanilla. The first sip surprised me, because it really does taste like root beer! Well, an artificial canned soda tasting root beer. I am not getting much of the vanilla ice cream flavor from this cup, although adding milk and a little sugar brings out more of a creamy vanilla flavor. I’m actually really enjoying this cup! I have just enough left to save for my fiancee, who adores root beer!

-Dry blend has medium black tea leaves and twigs with pieces of cinnamon and flavoring and small orange petals.
-Dry leaves smell like artificial root beer. Tea liquor aroma is of spicy cinnamon with a hint of vanilla.
-Tea liquor is a cloudy medium yellow brown color with a film on top.
-Spicy root beer flavor and finish. Artificial root beer soda aftertaste with a note of creamy vanilla.
-Best with milk and sweetener.
-Very good tea. Spicy root beer flavor with a hint of creamy vanilla ice cream. Slightly artificial taste, like canned root beer soda.

Although if I thought I was going to make a tea pop tonight I would have got the sparkling water and not the club soda.

4 tsp or so for 16 oz final volume.

Having some of this before I head to the mall… because it’s discontinued and since there’s a sale on 100g teas, I might pick up some more.

Definitely need to pick more up.

Thankfully it won’t break my tea budget… although I totally used the “I’m keeping to my tea budget!!” excuse to shop for clothes. Haha. (I’ve gone through all my clothes, and I’ve put together 3 capsule wardrobes (work, weekend, sport), and some of my tops desperately needed replacing.)

Preparation
205 °F / 96 °C 5 min, 0 sec 3 tsp 16 OZ / 473 ML
OMGsrsly

Ha. Procrastination sometimes rocks. Now I have a car to go to the mall. And for Costco in the morning. Sweet.

Evol Ving Ness

Capsule wardrobes—reminds me of spaceship gear. :)

Evol Ving Ness

Also, brilliant idea separating everything.

OMGsrsly

I used to be able to wear whatever to work – PJs, workout gear, jeans, whatever. But I can’t at my new job, so my closet needed to be reorganized. And the really shabby stuff needs to be replaced!

Evol Ving Ness

Thankfully, I can be fairly dress-up casual at work, but I tend towards more casual casual. My shabbier items go in the home ‘cleaning’ and crafting pile. That pile is growing.

OMGsrsly

I have to wear nylons, Evol! I used to be able to wear leggings and casual skirts, but now I have to wear nylons. The horror! (It’s really too bad Costco only sells sheers – I really only wear opaque tights.)

Fjellrev

What, no leggings? That sucks!

OMGsrsly

UGH I KNOW! I do on “casual Fridays”, but it’s not “professional attire”. Boo. (Seriously, it’s not like I’m wearing leggings and a crop top. Or pretending my semi opaque tights are pants… :D )

Fjellrev

Seriously, I don’t get why you can’t wear leggings in place of tights. Do they also make you wear more formal shoes too or can you wear something nice yet comfy?

OMGsrsly

Hahaha. I wear Clarks mary janes. Old lady shoes FTW. I think it’s the “socks + leggings” thing that isn’t business enough. If I had ankle boots, no one would know. :D I’ve been looking, but I haven’t found anything that works for my sore feet yet.

rosebudmelissa

I prefer opaque tights myself, although I usually buy the warm kind and only wear them in the winter with skirts or dresses.

Fjellrev

I was going to specifically ask about Clarks! Well hey, they make some nice ones. Have you tried Rieker? They make some fabulously comfy, stylish shoes.

If I had to wear tights, I’d take the opaque route too.

OMGsrsly

I haven’t found anything, unfortunately. The Clarks I have are good, but I tried on another style yesterday at Winners, and nope. So ouchie. I also tried a super cute pair of ankle boots, but I needed 1 size bigger… they only had an 8. Oh well.

Fjellrev

I can never find ones I really like in my size at Winners. But Marshalls tends to have a much better shoe selection. Have you tried there?

OMGsrsly

We actually only have one Marshalls here, and it’s in a really weird to get to area of town.

Honestly, I googled. I had no idea the store existed here.

Evol Ving Ness

Nylons! The horror. The expense.

Evol Ving Ness

Ankle boots. I suggest Blundstones. Expensive, but they’ll last for three or four years if not longer.

Fjellrev

Ah, I see where it is. That would be so annoying for you, for sure. Too bad they didn’t put it in Richmond already, eh? Like one of the shopping centres along the sky train line so the trip would be more worthwhile.

Ours is at the extreme south end but at least there are many other interesting stores around (IKEA!) so the trip seems worthwhile.

Fjellrev

Actually, I thought Metropolis would have one but I see they have a Winners already. That would be sweet too.

OMGsrsly

Yeah. Brentwood is mega renovating so maybe there? But as it is it’s just over an hour from home, longer if I go after work. Meh. I’ll check it out one day I’m sure!

OMGsrsly

Sadly Blundstones aren’t really work suitable! I need something a bit dressier, and those look like work boots. I mean, I’d LOVE to have a pair, but they’d be weekend/Friday wear.

Favourite tea. Such a good one to have when I’m sick.

Definitely need to keep my eyes open for this one. If they’re discontinuing it, maybe I can get a 250g bag…

Roswell Strange

I’d be sorely tempted to split a 250g bag with you if you don’t want a full 250g…

OMGsrsly

You wouldn’t want a full 250g? :) I could probably be persuaded to split one. Maybe! Honestly it would depend on what else I could add to the order to make free shipping.

This really is a good headache tea, Fjellrev. Not too strong, no flavour really out of place or triggering nausea.

Thanks for the reminder. :D

(cold brew. 1.5 tbsp per 1 litre, overnight)

Fjellrev

Aww, hope you will feel better soon. Contagious headaches make for contagious remedies. :)

IDK what it is about this tea, but I still really really like it. I’ll have to do a cold steep once I have some room in my fridge (tiny fridge is full because the 5lb bags of veggies weren’t much more than the 2lb bags of veggies!), because IMO a cold steep is the best way to drink this.

Even so, I’m enjoying this hot cup this evening. :)

(Steeped an unknown amount of time because I think I turned off the timer and then went to deal with laundry…? IDK, the timers I use for these tasks sound different.)

Preparation
200 °F / 93 °C 2 tsp 10 OZ / 295 ML
Fjellrev

I really like this one too! Although I’ve yet to try it hot. Just so addicted to the cold brew.

OMGsrsly

The cold brew is best! Sadly the hibiscus really comes out when it’s not. Not a dealbreaker for me, but definitely more tart than when cold.

Went into DavidsTea after work to get 100g of Root beer Float. Mmm… I was thirsty, so I got this favourite to go. Delicious as always. A little sweet, a little tart, delicious iced.

I might need a tin of this one as well, this summer. Iced tea is delicious.

Sil

stop it. stop stop stop it.

VariaTEA

I got this and found it too tart hot. That was before I tried cold brewing though so I may need to revisit this blend and see how it does iced. Now that I bought the ice tea mug, I can get it as one of my $1 refills.

OMGsrsly

LOL, Sil. :) I like a little tart in my cold brewed teas, I’m finding. Not a lot, but a little is nice. I do prefer it cold brewed, but I’ll take it hot and over ice if necessary.

TeaLady441

I actually like it so long as it’s cold!

Roswell Strange

I have a tin of this one for cold brewing :)

OM NOM NOM.

OMGsrsly

I think I need more recommendations for non-caffeinated teas I can cold steep or flash chill. Anyone? :)

VariaTEA

I just tried a cold steep of Lemon Chiffon and it turned out really well. I was inspired by Sil. And I have Lime Chiffon cold steeping right now.

MissB

I’ve yet to really venture into cold-steeping, unfortunately, however I’d most definitely try Eucalyptus Grapefruit from HI, or Bamboo Pomelo from Tea Gschwendner.

OMGsrsly

I wasn’t a huge fan of the Della Terra chiffon teas, but I’ll keep them in mind for the next order I do with them. :) I have the eucalyptus grapefruit and it’s so good! I just got a sample tho. I need to do an order. And sadly I can’t do the Bamboo Pomelo due to licorice. :(

OMGsrsly

I do have a couple at Bayswater to try. Maybe I’ll go there first, then plot an HI and Tealux order for my birthday. :) Maybe TeaG as well, since I do like the Kapha.

TeaLady441

Do you do a spreadsheet OMGsrsly? Are you one of us? I just started adding a cold-steep column in so I can track which ones are good cold. That won’t help you now but in the future at least.

How soon is your birthday? If you’re ordering from HI you might want to do it sooner than later as the shipping is still a little slow.

OMGsrsly

I added a column to my spreadsheet! :) Just need to remember to keep it updated. My birthday isn’t till April. I’m pre-planning well in advance. :)

Because of the way DavidsTea advertises this one, I made a steeper of it in the fridge while I was at work yesterday. I was hoping that drinking it (it’s like slightly tart, delicious juice) would make me feel better.

Not yet. But my hopes haven’t been completely crushed.

:)

I’m going to make more of this one today. So far it’s not irritating my throat, and I’m finding the flavour really refreshing.

1) Smells like Tang. Which I should know because I just bought and reportioned some Orange Tang for hiking.

2) With hot water added, it smells like cranberry apple cider packets… which I just bought and reportioned for hiking.

3) Without sweetener, it tastes like apple berry stuff. Kinda like the apple cranberry hot cider, actually, just not sweetened.

4) As it cools, it’s less tart and more apple-berry-y.

Verdict: Pretty good, but I’m not sure I’ll buy more. Gotta try it iced first. :)

Fjellrev

Wow, not expecting that haha.

OMGsrsly

Yeah, it’s odd! Granted, it’s more like seriously diluted Tang (which is what I’ve been drinking… a spoonful of powder in a giant glass of water), but still.

It has a bit of a medicinal taste when drank warm, too, which I don’t expect from the smell.

OMGsrsly

drank, drunk, drinked. IDEK.

Fjellrev

Haha you’d think with the rose hips alone it would be wildly different than that. So strange.

It’s supposed to be drunk, but I’m not an ignorant grammar Nazi, so honestly no judging here. :)

OMGsrsly

English, why are you so hard?! :)

I was expecting a sour mess with the rose hips and hibiscus, but it’s actually not bad. Worth a try, for sure.

OMGsrsly

Actually, I think it’s the vitamin C/citric acid content of the rose hips and other ingredients that’s making it taste like Tang. It’s not oranges, it’s berries with vitamin C. (I just finished my cup cold this morning!)

Fjellrev

That’s still so unexpected! I used to eat rose hip soup in Sweden for the vitamin C to battle colds, and it never reminded me of Tang.

OMGsrsly

Possible the sea buckthorn. I’ve never had it before, but apparently it has even MORE vitamin C in it. :)

This is the first sample DAVIDsTEA has sent me that tempts me to actually go out and get the tea! I think I’m going to try to wring all the re-steeps I can out of this, because it’s just perfect for this evening. I’m fighting off my allergies something horrible, and its sweet tang allows me to release some of the tension that’s been riding my shoulders.

At first this reminded me of Teavana’s Dragonfruit Devotion but its aftertaste is fresher than the slightly perfumey note that plagues theirs. I have no firsthand knowledge of passionfruit or dragonfruit (other than the fact they sound like sci-fi tropes) but judging by these teas I’m left wondering if they taste similar.

We’ve been steadily replacing our Teavana teas with better (and less expensive!) versions from other sellers, so I’m glad this fell onto our radar. My husband absconded with half my cup, so I think he agrees with me!

I have a thing for when trying a tea for the 1st time to do it hot, or at least brew it that way, with sweetener, taste it alittle then pour it over ice cubes. Unfortunately though, before I had gotten any solid sips in it, 2 flies decided to commit suicide in my cup. GACK! (Well not truly suicide as I am sure they were just attracted to the sweetness of the tea. Poor things. At any rate, needless to say I am not inclined to finish this cup. The small sips I did take…it was ok, but didn’t seem to be up to par with Pink Passionfruit. So tempted to make another tea, (Like Tropicalia or Coconut Grove.) But if I do that I should go on fly patrol before hand and I really would rather give about 2 hours to my writing, then bed.

Kittenna

Yuck. I’d have dumped the whole thing.

Lynxiebrat

I did end up dumping it. Not sure whether I’d even want to try again with this tea. Been tempted to order the Pink Passionfruit whatever their smallest size is, though maybe I should stick with the iced tea package, at least that is cheaper. Thought if I order that I should order 1 or 2 others. MAYBE. We’ll see how tasting Tropicalia and Coconut Grove will go. Both Pink Flamingo and Citron Oolong look really tasty. LOL…so much for my tea hiatus!

Evening cup of tea. This is actually from The Traveling Tea Box that I didn’t have time to sample before I mailed the box to Claire. I’m becoming somewhat more tolerant of rooibos blends, mostly because I’ve had so many lately that the rooibos flavor wasn’t noticeable in at all. The dry leaves for this tea have a sugary caramel aroma with a hint of rooibos. The steeped tea is rooibos and sweet caramel. Sadly, the rooibos is definitely noticeable in the taste. It’s a smooth mediciney kind of flavor with a candy caramel taste. The aftertaste is light and creamy, but with a lingering rooibos note. Adding milk and sweetener makes for a nice, creamy cup but does little to dull the rooibos flavor. I really want to like this tea, but the rooibos aftertaste just doesn’t do it for me. I’m glad that I got to try this one, though!

-Dry blend has red rooibos with pieces of caramel.
-Dry leaves smell of sugary caramel with a hint of rooibos. Tea liquor aroma is of rooibos and sweet caramel.
-Tea liquor is a clear dark reddish brown color.
-Smooth mediciney rooibos and candy caramel flavor and finish. Light creamy aftertaste with a lingering note of rooibos.
-Best with milk and sweetener.
-Fair tea. Creamy caramel flavor with an unfortunate lingering rooibos taste.

This blend surprised me, I was expecting it to be a little tart, but this is actually sweet. I actually really like this. I tried guava when I was in Cuba last year and loved it. This tea isn’t quite that good, but it is good in it’s own right.

I made this and chilled it which it seems is my new way of enjoying tea this summer. I used to cold brew all the time but this is just as easy. Although, sometime cold brewing brings out sweeter notes in the teas.

My DAVIDsTEA order came in today, and I am so glad that I decided to give this a try! It’s just so delightfully sweet and creamy – both in aroma and flavor. Tart is the word! I liked this tea, but did not LOVE it… a bit too tart for me. Next time I will add some rock sugar to it and maybe that will bring the tartness down a bit. I really like that its a mate, because sometimes I just need an extra kick in the day. This tea might taste really good iced, but I have only had it hot. Glad I have it, but also glad I only got 30g of it. I feel that that will be enough for me.
