Yep, 30 sec. I love how Japanese greens all have different leaf amount/temp/water volume ratios.

Ricky

I know! it’s insane, haha. Black tea 4-5 minutes, haha. Green tea… eh it varies. This one was so strong for 30 seconds! Must of been that extra green thing.

Cofftea

Matcha definitely adds flavor:)

Oh nooooo! Don’t think Adagio’s sencha is the best there is – it’s a nifty blend but there’s some really yummy – and pungent – stuff out there! Den does have some good ones (personally I love their fuka-midori) but I think I’ve been happier overall with Lupicia’s offerings. Have you tried any of Den’s loose yet or just the bag? Fingers crossed that your sencha experiences get better!

Ricky

I haven’t tried the loose yet. I mean it gets a bit hairy making loose leaves at work, especially when I don’t even have hot water in the water cooler! I have to go to the kitchen and boil some water. Argh. I’ll probably try the other tea bag tomorrow and try the loose leaf on the weekend. I’m neglecting GM! Oh no!

Auggy

I will anxiously wait until the weekend for your notes on the loose Den’s!

Ricky

Ahhh, I’m a guinea pig! It’s okay, I enjoy trying green tea.

Auggy

Not a guinea pig (well, not for me since I’ve tired and liked). I just want you to find wonders above Adagio’s sencha! Ooooh, and if you want pungency, shincha is usually really great for that. HUGE mouthfeel and wonderfulness going on with it!

Ricky

It’s going to be a fun weekend of Green Tea! You just wait! I’m going to devour Den’s Tea sampler…… finally!

Oolonga

Ricky, Den’s sampler comes only with regular sencha teabag, they don’t have sencha with matcha in teabags at all.

Wonderfully toasted, seaweed notes, but it’s not fishy in any way. Lots of umami. Emerald green color. I drink this tea and read as part of my evening ritual.

I was contemplating on whether I should put this in my shopping cart or not a few days ago when I was ordering from Den’s. I wish I did. Well, next time then…

Cofftea

UMAMI! I love Den’s. Definitely next time I have the storage. Thanks for mentioning it otherwise I would have just blown over your review.:)

Waiting for the leaves of my strawberry shortcake to dry so I can pick them out of my teapot cover and resteep… ugh… I also needed something w/ a quick steep time because I didn’t want to be away from steepster too long:) so I went w/ one of my Den’s Tea’s samples.

Serving size: 1tsp/8oz water

There were a few ginseng green leaves left that contributed to the liquor but I’m still shocked at how dark brown and coffeeish it is after only 15sec. The aroma is much like genmai cha except darker. Yes, an aroma can be dark lol. The taste is much the same- roasty, toasty, deep, slightly coffee ish even, and gentlemently. Looks like a black tea though, not a green…

Preparation
Boiling 0 min, 15 sec
Cofftea

2nd infusion. No idea how long to steep it for this time so I went for 20 sec. WOW! It’s a lil lighter and a lil more red. I’ve never smoked anything before, but I think I’m detecting something that might be tabaccoish. It was in the 1st infusion also, but I’m just now placing it. I like this infusion better, it’s a lil sweeter.

Cofftea

3rd infusion, 25 sec. Slightly lighter in both liquor and taste and slightly more sweet.

This sounds delicious! I’ve been meaning to order from Den’s Tea for awhile.. maybe it’s time to pull the trigger.

Carolyn

You can order their little sample pack for $3. They included the apple sencha in that one. (I personally think the pineapple sencha is the best of the three I’ve tried but all three are good.)

silvermage2000

Nice review this does sound good I have never had grape in a tea.

Carolyn

@silvermage2000, I’m going to be mailing you the tea this afternoon. I think I still have a little room in the box (it’s a small box). I’ll add a sample of grape sencha for you to try.

I swear to god, dealing with my inner self is like dealing with an ADD-afflicted five-year old. I pointed out that I had open packages of Apple Sencha and Pineapple Sencha, both of which we love. I pointed out that opening tea exposes it to air, which speeds the staling. But my inner self wanted to try the new flavor. Demanded to try it, in fact. So here it is in my cup. And it is a beautiful, sweet. buttery, grape-scented golden liquor. The leaves themselves are beautiful as well, with dark sharp green leaves and sprinkled purple and pink blossoms. It has a very light sweet flavor with the merest hint of butter and grapes. Quite, quite nice. I’m glad I didn’t choose to spank my inner self and tell her to fly straight.

You don’t find grape-y teas very often, but I love them…Canadian Ice Wine is another of my favorites (Culinary Teas).

Carolyn

That sounds wonderful! You may enjoy the Champagne Infused White Raspberry Tea by Red Leaf Tea.

Jen

I agree that finding grape flavored anything is unusual. Lupicia makes a grape green tea called Budou. From what I remember, the flavor is pretty spot on.

Carolyn

Sounds good. I’ll have to look for it.

takgoti

This has led me to wonder what spanking your inner self would look like. Shuddering? Twitching? But I digress. This sounds good!

Shanti

Carolyn, does this taste like grapes or raisins? I’ve been thinking about buying this, but I hate raisins :/

Carolyn

Not like raisins at all. It’s more grape juice like.

LENA

If it’s more like grape juice, I’m in! Mmm.

I love the buttery pineapple fragrance and flavor of this tea. I usually do very little resteeping, but these flavored Senchas from Den’s Tea just beg for a good resteep. Also, since they call for very fast steeps (30 seconds to 45 seconds) they last really well over time. Lately I’ve taken to drinking one of these all afternoon with many resteeps.

That’s why I love my apple- it lasts forever, but just when I’m getting sick of the apple it disappears and leaves me w/ just a wonderful, slightly sweet sencha.

Th dry dark green leaves express a strong pineapple fragrance. It smells like a fresh ripe pineapple, as opposed to the candy pineapple fragrance that is so common. The beautiful yellow liquor produced by the leaves smells like nuts, butter, and lightly of pineapple. The pineapple comes out more strongly in the taste, but it is still quite light. This is a very nice tea. I think I will definitely be buying more of this.

Free sampler. Tea 1. WOW! I didn’t realize that every Japanese green tea is steeped using different water, tea, and temp perameters! My 1st experience w/ Genmaicha. 1tsp (2.9g) steeped in 8oz boiled water for 30 sec. This is a lighter ratio than I would have prepared (3g/80oz water) had I not known how to prepare Japanese green tea. I also would have only prepared 6oz at a time. The liquor is really fun, IT’S LIME GREEN!:) The aroma is exactly what you’d expect it to be, as is the taste. A good food pairing would be cereal or pop corn. This is a good genmaicha, but I’m just not a genmaicha person. But if you are, you MUST try this- AND 1st time customers can try it for free!:)

Preparation

Cofftea

Just gonna start adding comments for additional infusions.. 2nd infusion, boiling water for 40 sec. Liquor is just a bit lighter, still lime green. Smells the same. Tastes pretty much the same too. Brownie points for a hard core 2nd infusion. Does anyone else resteep genmaicha? How do you do it?

Cofftea

OK.. I took a sip and I think it went into my sinuses cuz I feel like I have water up my nose, but none went in… ouch.

1 scoop in my Yoplait light fat free black berry yogurt. Unfortunately the black berry was too strong for me to really taste the matcha, but this is a great breakfast or study break snack for when there’s no time to even make a bowl of matcha. Adding matcha to yogurt adds wonderful health benefits like the amino acid L-theanine, vitamins, minerals, protein, and fiber- along w/ a lil caffeine.

fcmonroe

That does sound really good. I’ll have to give that a try sometime.

Cofftea

I have vanilla yogurt in the frige that I bet would be even better. I was just hoping the matcha would come thru in the black berry one.

jennlea

I am really gonna need to get some good matcha. The stuff I have is crummy.

Cofftea

You should totally get some from Den’s. They’re giving away free Lucky Gold Tea w/ every purchase over $30. I can’t even begin to comprehend crummy matcha. What kind do you have?

jennlea

I honestly can’t tell what kind it is. Got it at an International Market just to try and it is nasty bitter junk.

Cofftea

Sad! I didn’t think bad matcha was even possible:( This is the only Den’s matcha I’ve tried, but I’m going to order the matcha Miyabi next time.

Shanti

Okay, you’ve inspired me to order some of this. Just wondering, what does matcha taste like? I’ve had matcha ice cream before, but never actual matcha tea. Is it bitter? Sweet? Savory?

LENA

great idea. i had some in a protein shake the other day and it was really good.

Cofftea

Shanti, it’s really all of the above. Different brands may be more sweet or savory but the combination is absolutely amazing! I can’t wait to read your review of it! I suggest getting it from Den’s and ordering something else to make a $30 order, then you get free Lucky Gold Tea!:)

Had a 12oz pepppermint hot chocolate yesterday and saved half. Poured it in my matcha bowl w/ 1 scoop of matcha and drank it while watching the season premire of Biggest Loser. Yeah I know, but all things in moderation:) The ratio of hot chocolate/ matcha was perfect… minty… sweet… indulgent… yet savory. The perfect grown up hot chocolate!

fcmonroe

Sounds like a good idea to me. I’ll have to try adding a little matcha to my next hot chocolate.

Cofftea

So freakin good:) And make sure you drink it from a bowl!:)

Cofftea

If you like the chocolate/orange combo mandarin matcha would be good in this. But I’m not and was looking for a bit more savory.

Now there’s talk of pumpkin chocolate matcha… yummy! That would be the perfect sweet/savory combo. But alas, I don’t have that. So it’s thick spiced rum matcha today. 3oz water/1scoop matcha/1TB spiced rum creamer. I love the idea of a rum creamer, but not too sure I like the creamy texture of it. Maybe 52teas will come up w/ something. In the mean time, rum extract goes on my grocery list.:)

Must… have… mandarin matcha… I practically had to tear myself away from my mandarin matcha to have this for my 2nd serving of the day. Don’t get me wrong, this is amazing! Made it thick (1 scoop/3oz water) as a palate cleanser for dinner- Wendy’s Asian boneless wings! Smooth, thick, a little creamy, and grassy. Heaven.

White Chocolate Matcha Latte:
*1/4-1/3 cup water
*1/2-2/3 cup milk (liquid amounts depend on if you want a more concentrated 6oz cup or a less concentrated 8oz cup, I made an 8oz cup today)
*1TB- 4tsp white chocolate coffee creamer or shaved white chocolate (1TB for a 6oz cup and either 1TB or 4tsp for an 8oz cup, I went w/ 1TB)

Decided to try a latte since my cold is pretty much gone and the milk is fresh. Combined the water and milk and heated til small bubbles formed on the service. If you have white chocolate, I suggest using that and melting it into the milk and water double boiler style by heating the mixture over a bowl of boiling water being careful that the top bowl does not actually touch the water. I unfortunately don’t have white chocolate so I just went w/ coffee creamer. Added the milk and water to 1 scoop matcha and 1TB coffee creamer and whisked.

Not too bad considering until now the only way I drank milk was in an espresso latte and white chocolate really isn’t my favorite. No milk after taste (the only way I know how to describe it lol) like when I made it w/ pure milk. Maybe that was also in part to the white chocolate creamer? The white chocolate complimented both the milk and the matcha nicely. I think personally I’ll stick w/ my matcha flavored w/ herbal tisanes and drinking chocolate, but anyone who likes milk and white chocolate will love this!

LENA

this sounds pretty awesome, but I wish you could send me a glass of the matcha you made with the chocolate mix. yum! :)

Cofftea

Haha! Buy some drinking chocolate:) Am I tempting you to get a matcha set yet? I’ll be like teaplz was w/ her GM sampler hehe;)

YAY! I’m finally well enough to make my matcha drinking chocolate that I wanted to have for breakfast Christmas morning.

3TB drinking chocolate mix and 1 scoop matcha in my bowl. 1/3 cup milk heated just to the point where small bubbles started to form on the top. Mixed completely. Do not use your chasen.

YUMMY! Rich, smooth, creamy, chocolatey… and way too much fun to drink hehe;) I do taste the matcha in the very back, but I’m thinking that might only be because I know it’s in there. I was hoping the matcha would come thru more due to the small amount of milk I used. Does anyone have a better recipe? Oh well. Even plain drinking chocolate drank out of a matcha bowl, especially for breakfast, is definitely a bright spot in my day.:)

Andrea in New Mexico

Oh, wow… I want to do this!

So you’re not adding any additional milk after the 1/3 cup? And why not the chasen— are you using a spoon or fork or another type of whisk?

Cofftea

No extra milk, and I’m glad I didn’t- I’m afraid the matcha flavor would have been even lighter. I didn’t use my chasen because I was afraid it would get too gunked up and since it’s so delicate it would be a pain in my butt to clean. I just used a spoon and that worked great because I didn’t end up w/ any matcha residue at the bottom of my bowl like when I make it w/ water or milk. I stirred the matcha and chocolate powder together a bit before adding the milk.

Andrea in New Mexico

I think I’m going to go try this now—I have 3 different drinking chocolates and they’re all spicy. You think this is a good idea?

Andrea in New Mexico

Oh, and I only have rice and almond milks…

Cofftea

I think it’s a wonderful! idea. I’d go w/ almond milk.

Andrea in New Mexico

Well, that was truly inspired, Ms. Cofftea!

I had to wing it on the amounts of chocolate and milk, lacking measuring implements here, but as a gesture of compensation, I did use my chasen, which survived just fine. :-)

One scoop of Essencha’s Jade Bliss Matcha plus 3 spoonfuls of Lake Champlain’s Aztec Hot Chocolate added to some amount of unsweetend vanilla almond milk heated just to the point of small bubbles forming on top.

Holy moly. This was nothing less than exquisite liquid truffle. I wish I could sigh and say that oh, I couldn’t possibly have something this rich more than once a week, but that would be a bald-faced lie. I’ll probably do it again before the day is done.

I’ll be playing close attention to any future tweaks you make to this, Ms. Cofftea. The only thing I’ll do differently next time myself is drink it while it’s hotter. I, too, only taste the matcha “in the very back”, and I like the way it works. Maybe I’ll try a different chocolate next time—I do have one that isn’t spicy but has notes of almond and orange in it. That could be brilliant, I think.

Cofftea

Chocolate, almond and orange w/ the almond milk and matcha I think would be lovely! That makes me wonder where my mandarin matcha order from 52 teas is…

Meg

I wouldn’t be surprised if you could taste the matcha behind the chocolate. one of the most popular items I make to bring to work potlucks are simple little mini-chocolate cupcakes with a matcha buttercream frosting. They disappear quickly.

Cofftea

@Seattlemeg- I definitely could, although I was hoping the matcha would be stronger.

Meg

I had a treat someone brought to me from new york that I’ve never found since – a hershey bar that had green tea as a filler in the squares. Ever seen it? It was actually really good.

Cofftea

Yum! No I haven’t. I’ll stick w/ this, it’s more fun to drink chocolate out of a bowl;)

Meg

may I ask where you got your bowl? I’ve been meaning to go to our local humongous Asian grocery store (uwajimaya.com) but haven’t had time. I really need to try more matchas.

Cofftea

I got this set http://www.denstea.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=289_295 I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT! It was on sale for $52 at the time and there was no shipping because it was over $50. If you’re a 1st time customer they have a sampler that they normally charge $3 for (it’s worth way more than that though) that you can either get free w/ your 1st $15 or more purchase or you pay the $3 and get a coupon for $3 off your 1st order that totals $15. All the Den’s Tea teas I have except for the apple sencha are from that sampler.

Meg

cool, thank you, bookmarked!

Carolyn

OMG that sounds amazing! That may be my Happy New Year drink this year.

Cofftea

Oh it was Carolyn…. it was! While it would be a good NYE drink, for me at least, I think that’d take away a little bit of the novelty and fun because part of why it rocked my socks off was because I had it for breakfast. So maybe another flavored matcha at midnite and then this as your watching the sun rise?:)

I’ve known this for as long as I can remember, but just got confirmation of a very important lesson- God gives you exactly what you need exactly when you need it.

Even though she’s sick, mom decided to go grocery shopping tonite. We had planned to have something for dinner that required grocery shopping (eggplant parmigana w/ homemade chard and herb pasta) until she got sick. So we were just gonna make due, no big deal. But then she decided at 5:30 to go which means dinner would be insanely late.

I was starved and, since I hadn’t had my daily matcha, I decided to have half a bowl to tide me over. Mom walks out the door and I prep my matcha. I no sooner get it whisked (still no foam dang it) and my mom calls. She’s not going grocery shopping. My grandpa (who has emphazema and Parkinson’s) got the h1n1 vaccine before Christmas and since has had trouble breathing (even though he’s been on oxygen 24/7 for years), sleeps almost constantly, and isn’t eating (which for him is like me not drinking tea lol) so my grandma called an ambulance to take him to the hospital and wanted my mom to meet her there. It’s not enough for me to be delt crap, but now my family? So I did the only thing I could do. Told satan to go back to where he belongs and found comfort in my matcha. If I had my matcha earlier in the day, which is what I normally do, I wouldn’t have had this comfort literally in my hands when I needed it most. I love God’s timing.

Whoa… kinda wrote a book here… sorry… If there’s anyone still reading at this point to apologize to. If people still are and if you pray, please do. And go drink some matcha from a fun bowl- it’ll make you smile even when life makes you scream. Although I can’t hold my empty matcha bowl too long or I’ll be tempted to throw it lol.

Peggie Bennett

So sorry to hear about your family going through so much right now. What a way to end the year, huh?
Prayers and good tea to you and your family!

Cofftea

Thanks Peggie! I’m thinking of making some mecha next which in my opinon is a steeped version of matcha. Between the caffeine and the tannins, I’m not sure I want to have another half bowl at this point- I think that may result in an effect that isn’t very soothing and comforting, and that’s exactly why I drink matcha daily.

Andrea in New Mexico

I like your perspective on this, but I’m sorry to hear that your Grandpa’s having a hard time. (I’m very anti-vax, myself, and hear a lot of stories about reactions to shots…). I hope he’s back to himself soon—and your mom, too!

Andrea in New Mexico

p.s. You gonna get some supper?

Cofftea

I’m snacking on some fruit and stuff w/ my tea. I have enough lettuce for a small salad that I think I’ll have, but I wanna kinda wait to see how late mom’ll be.

Cofftea

I’m pro H1N1 vaccine especially for someone like him- and I don’t think it really has much to do w/ that. Looking back I don’t think my cousin and I should have gone over there because I was just getting over my cold and Desiree was even sicker than I was. We were just being really selfish and didn’t want to miss Christmas. Oh well, what’s done is done.

Cofftea

Update on my grandpa- pnuemonia. Not really surprising for a smoker and former mill worker.

gmathis

When I’m counting blessings, a well-timed cup of tea to sink my face into is usually at the top of the list—-I hear where you’re coming from! Prayers that you’ll be surprised by joy, good news, and some other little creature comforts today.
