Thank you Dexter3657! I’m happy I got to experiment more with Fauchon, but I found that this didn’t have enough fruit for me. It was barely apricot? I still enjoyed trying it; I just wouldn’t buy any.

I bet Lupicia would have an amazing apricot tea! :D

There are a lot of flavors I think about and think that Lupicia would do an amazing version of.

This is another tea from MissB’s mystery pack. Thank you!

I drank this hot yesterday. It was a good balance between the black tea base and the mango. I could definitely identify the mango in this and it was pretty tasty. Nothing about the base tasted cardboard-ish. It was just a yummy fruity tea. I plan to make the rest of this as an ice tea as I think this will shine a bit more cold.

Apricots are my favorite food group.

But it is so hard to find an apricot tea that is not artificial or weird tasting or bitter. I am sure most fruit flavoured teas have this problem but I love apricots so much that I want a genuine flavoured tea.

I picked this one up hoping that the French would be able to stay true to my beloved apricot. The smell of the dry tea reminds me of thick and pulpy freshly made apricot juice.

The taste is ok. A bit lacklustre. But I did make it at work and although I think I have a pretty good set up at work, it is still a work set up. I am definitely getting real notes of apricot. But it feels and tastes artificially sweetened. The apricot flavour it working really well with the black tea base that is am finding very subtle.

I think next time I need to use a bit more leaf. But otherwise, this is the closest- to -apricot tea I have ever had. I bet a bit of bergamot would make this tea divine. Mmmmmm. Apricots and bergamot…

drank Raspberry Macaron by Fauchon

I had tried this once before when Stephanie gave me a sample. I liked it ok. Luckily, I liked this even more this time! I admit, I picked out the peppercorns (why are they there anyway?) so I didn’t have that in the tea. But the resulting tea was just light and a little fruity. It was really nice. Oh, and the tin is so pretty!

Another sample from Stephanie! Luckily she also made sure to tell me to brew it at a low temp, so my cup turned out really well. I don’t get a strong raspberry flavor, or a strong floral note. It’s just a pleasant cup with a bit of raspberry at the end. A little astringent too.

Thanks Stephanie<\b> for this sample! I can definitely see where this is a floral EG instead of a more citrus one, and that’s educational for sure. I think I prefer the less perfumed ones, but it won’t stop me from enjoying this while it lasts.

drank Caramel & Jasmin by Fauchon
592 tasting notes

I decided to continue with the French teas today with this very generous sample from Stephanie. This tea is very confusing to me. The dry leaf smelled heavily of caramel, but the steeped tea smells more like jasmine. I can taste both the floral and sweet notes in the cup. Also, my mouth seems to fill up with the floral flavor afterwards. It leans a little on the perfume-y side in that aspect. I also feel that there is something a bit nutty in the flavor as well? Overall, this tea is very overwhelming and confusing for me, so it’s hard to know what to think about it.

Stephanie

I agree with your assessment. A confusing tea! :/

This is another one from Dexter.

This one is interesting. I read tea description and was a bit confused. I feel like there is a bit of everything in this tea. Kind of like they threw all the left overs together and came up with a tea that certainly sounds fancy and high class.

The smell of the brewed tea is quite strong candied almond with some jasmine. Makes me a bit unsure.

The taste is different. Not bad, just not flavours I wouldn normally put together. I am getting strong almond and creamy flavours. There seems like there are also rose and jasmine tastes in there. There is a candied quality to the almonds, almost like marzipan. There is sweetness to the tea on its own, with no sweetner needed to be added.

I think this is a good tea. It is a rich tea. I am happy to have had a chance to try it but I don’t think I would purchase it.

Thanks Dexter for the opportunity to try this tea!

drank Pear Tea by Fauchon
871 tasting notes

Hello Steepster!

It’s been awhile. I am still here, checking things out every once in a while. Things have been stupid crazy. So I haven’t drank a lot of tea lately, let alone have had time to review any. So of course I have a mad case of the grumps. So today I decided I am going to be a recluse, don’t talk to me, or text me, or come over, or book me an appointment, or ask me to do anything.

Well of course, because I decided today is MY day, I have already had to go out and run some errands, people were texting me at 7 am (FML). And now I have company coming. But they have been forewarned. I am not going to be a host, or pleasant at all. I don’t want them here (they thought I was joking, but I wasn’t). They can come and entertain themselves. That is what I am planning anyway. But I know it is not how it is going to go.

All I am asking for is for the world to leave me along today. sigh.

So I am going to try to get to some samples and do some reviews.

I received this one from Dexter! I am assuming this is the right tea, my little package was labelled La Poire, but I am sure this is the same tea.

The brewed tea smells like strong black tea, bold and malty, with a light fruity flavour.

Wow, the taste is very much pear. Definitely surprising. It is a bit of artificial pear-candy tasting, but much more pear flavour than I expected. I did not need to add any sweetener at all. The black tea is very bold, thick, strong, and malty. On first sip, there is a very strong pear flavour, then it quickly fades to the black base. The pear flavour becomes more natural and starts to linger longer once the tea begins to cool a bit.

It is supposed to be a rainy day. I love rain. Right now it is like the pre- gross windy weather that will blow in the rain. I can’t wait…for the rain, not my company. Damn people that love me and want to be around me. I need to be much more grumpy, unless they like grumpy, hmmm…

(I have clearly not had enough tea in recent times).

Terri HarpLady

I am very much a loner, & left to my own devices with all my musical instruments, tea, food, & garden, would probably be happy to never see another human face…just tinkering, sipping, singing, & strumming into blissful oblivion. But, thus is not the case. I have students on & off five days a week, 3 of my adult children & one grandchild live with me, and the other one lives a block away with her hubby & 2 kids. This is all really good & wonderful, don’t get me wrong, I am grateful for my kids & students, but I am rarely actually alone for any length of time. I hear you!

Glad to see you here, BTW! :)

This is nice. I love the lemony creaminess of this tea. I’m not really getting grassy like other people said, though.

I want to enjoy this with a nice piece of lemon shortbread.

This is actually the third tea I’ve today. I should go log the others, too. I’m still sick and the cough medicine is making me loopy.

I have about 2t of this left, enough for a small mug (I usually use a 15 oz mug) so I’m adding it back to the wishlist.

dexter sent this one my way from my wishlist. let me tell you…THIS is a happy pear tea. happy happy happy. It’s not a green base, which makes me SUPER excited and happy. While i enjoy green pear teas, they’re still not quite what i want. This one smells like juicy pear…but not fruity pear…which i know sounds weird. This is that smell…when you first cut into a pear that’s about to be over ripe… the base is still present, so the flavouring is subtle. It’s not an in your face sort of tea…it’s one to sit and enjoy and let it wrap it’s tasty pear around around you. thanks a bunch dexter! If i find this at winners…i will be a happy lady!

Stephanie

Love this one, super natural tasting pear!

Dexter

Have you tried the pear tea from Joy’s Teaspoon? It’s really good too…

Courtesty of boychik… :)

This certainly smells floral enough to knock your socks off. Steeped, it is still really floral. I don’t get any macaron but there is definitely rose and definitely raspberry. I get more rose than raspberry but it’s pretty good nonetheless. A nice girly kind of tea fit for a floral tea party.

I probably overleafed a bit, but I generally do. I took it easy on the steeping and it turned out well. However, I can see how this could easily get yuck at higher temp/longer steep.

;-) glad you kinda liked it. It is too floral for me.

Nicole

Wow. The cooler it gets, the floral-er it gets. Oof. Not for me unless hot.

i love this one, but yeah, you have to drink it fast (i think it’s gross tepid too!), and be gentle with it steep-wise.

GCTTB V2

Plucked this one out of the box to try because it smelled phenomenal and I was sure I hadn’t tried it. Turns out, that I have but it was over two years ago. Evidently it didn’t make much of an impression because I had NO recollection of trying it, though reading my tasting notes I can glean that I didn’t much like it despite a rating of ‘75’.

So, now that I AM trying it again this tasting note comes in two parts…

Part One: Cold Brew

So I cold brewed this because I figured it’d make a refreshing brew, and that the sweet, juicy smelling apricot would be a nice summery flavour. When I drank this two years ago, it appears that both times I had it were hot so this is a new preparation method for me as well.

I’m actually a little surprised and impressed with just how clearly the apricot flavour is coming across as apricot and not just some sort of generic stonefruit of vague peach/nectarine/apricot amalgamation. The black base is a little brisk, and is both malty and floral. I’d definitely say that falls into the vague characteristics of a Ceylonese black base, though the ingredients say this is a blend of Chinese and Sri Lankan (Ceylonese). It’s very nice paired with the apricot though, and it definitely does what I’d expected of it as well as delivering the flavours promised. Not much I can fault, here.

Part Two: Cocktails

So, this summer I’ve been teaching myself somewhat casually how to bar tend. Essentially, each paycheck I pick a cocktail or two that I’d like to learn how to make and then next time our drinking group is over at the house I purchase the necessary flavoured liquors for the cocktails and they (the group) purchase the harder alcohol; vodka, rum, whiskey, etc. In exchange, they guinea pig for me and they get, mostly, free drinks. The most recent thing I’ve been experimenting with is Sours. My personal favourite is Amaretto Sours, but a few nights ago I started to make Apricot Sours using Apricot Brandy, Sweet and Sour Mix, and a little bit of simple syrup.

That was before I got this tea box, but when I saw this in the box I knew that I’d have to do a “tea cocktail” variation of the Apricot Sour if I wound up liking it – and I did! So, my recipe which is a term I use loosely as there wasn’t much measuring involved was approx. 1/3 of my 25 oz. cold brew mixed with a splash of Apricot Brandy and then a ‘larger’ splash of sweet and sour mix. No simple syrup.

And it’s actually lovely! I think that the presence of the black base does wonders for taking the edge off the drink: sours are usually really dominant in flavour and I can never do more than like two of them in a night because of the acidity but I might be able to do more of these. They taste much more natural, in a way? I think that’s because of the apricot notes of the tea being a much more realistic and less sugared version of the apricot in the Apricot Brandy.

And I mean obviously these aren’t strong drinks: there’s probably equal to or less than the amount of a shot of brandy in this drink and compared to how strong I typically mix my drinks that’s basically child’s play. But tea cocktails!!! How could I not try it?

Sipdown (168/170)!

I wonder if I could make 150 by the end of the month. Probably not. I guess I’ll leave it as an “absent minded goal”. If I hit it, great. If not – meh.

Anyway, I made this to go in the timolino but without milk so I could get an impression of what it tastes like straight. I almost regret doing so though, because even though the fruitiness of the apricot came through and there’s was still a honey like quality to the black tea there was also a lot of astringency and some underlying bitterness. I steeped it the same way as last time too (minus the milk added after steeping) so I don’t think I can really blame user error.

Hmmm…

Anyway – it wasn’t awful, just not particularly good either. I don’t think I’ll really miss this one…

VariaTEA

I am aiming for 150 too. In theory that is only 8 teas and therefore totally doable but I am sure there will be swaps waiting for me when I get home on the 27th and that will put me back over.

drank L'Abricot by Fauchon

Made this in my timolino for my trip to the mall; while I drank most of it there I didn’t finish it, so I’m having the last bit now… I believe I received my sample from Lala.

While on my fun little excursion I took the opportunity to stop at the post office and mail of my package for Cavocorax, so hopefully that makes it to her soon! I also checked my work schedule and much to my dismay it looks like my shift starts at 7AM(!) tomorrow morning – so it’s going to be an early night for me. Bleck.

I also noticed that next week’s schedule is up and I get Monday to Wednesday off; add that in with Sunday from this week, which I also have off, and that’s an awesome four day stretch! Since I know now that I have time next week to stop at DAVIDsTEA, I decided to hit up the liquor store instead; my first time going into a liquor store. I definitely look right on the cusp of 19 (I could fall either way on the “age line” or whatever) so I got lots of shifty looks, and one of the employees was following me around in store.

In the end I picked up a whole bunch of different kinds of vodka. Why, you ask? Well, I figured that’d allow me to make some tea infused martini type thingers – and that seemed like a cool idea: I’m always excited to explore different ways of drinking tea – and this is a way where maybe Tre will get into it too. Plus I’ve been 19 for a month now and haven’t popped my “legal drinking age cherry”, and that’s just sad – right?

So, there’s some of Butiki’s Ruby Pie cold brewing in a few shots worth of vodka in the fridge right now. Not sure how long I should let it cold brew for. Hmm…

Anyway this tea is pretty good. I added milk to it but lord knows why; apricot and milk are not really foods that are that associated with one another. It still works though. Before I get into it, can I just get a “hell yes” about the fact there’s no peach in this though? I mean, HELL YES. Apricot is not an automatic companion of peach.

But yeah; this is good even with the weird milk I added. In addition to the apricot which is fairly strong (and really creamy from the milk) I get strong notes of honey and then some lighter, faint chocolate notes – both I’m assuming from the base tea.

I still have another cup left, so I swear I’ll have that one straight to see how much my evaluation holds true when there isn’t the weird(ish) milk component involved.

drank Caramel & Jasmin by Fauchon
618 tasting notes

I was surprised to see little caramel squares and jasmine flowers in this blend. Well, you might think, “duh.. it’s caramel & jasmine!” but I was expecting more of a plain blend without the chunky flowers and caramel… nice! The scent of this tea is lovely — sweet jasmine and buttery caramel.

Sipping… oh, I like this! It’s heavy on the jasmine, but not so much that it becomes stinky or gives me a headache. The caramel follows closely behind and offers a lingering sort of sweetness. I also get a little bit of something like vanilla ice cream in the finish. Yum! The base is interesting… more green than black for me. Not astringent, but not terribly smooth either… something in between. Quite a nice and sweet tea. A good choice for when you can’t decide between flowers or dessert!

Sami Kelsh

I’d never have thought of putting these flavours together, but ohh, I like the sound of this!

drank L'Hiver (Winter Tea) by Fauchon
1146 tasting notes

Aaargh! I had a biopsy this morning. It didn’t hurt much afterwards. More like soreness/tenderness/discomfort. But not pain. Until I lifted the kettle wrong while making this tea. Doc said no heavy lifting, but it’s just a kettle! Yeah, now it really hurts. Ice pack time! I’m just going to assume that ice packs are ok. Not that the cold is penetrating the gauze and tape very well anyway. Blargh.

At least this tea doesn’t suck. I don’t know that it’s worth physical pain, but it is tasty! The dry leaf smells overwhelmingly of vanilla, with a hint of lemon. Brewed, the smell is creamy lemongrass. I’m tasting mostly lemongrass. Where did that enticing vanilla go?! As the tea cools, some vanilla flavor comes through at the end of the sip. But so does a bit of dryness and… astringency? That’s weird for a white tea.

I decided to see how this would go with a lemon macaron. French tea calls for a French confection, non? The sweetness of the macaron brought out some more of that vanilla flavor. But the more this cools, the more the dryness comes out. I’m really not enjoying that aspect. The lesson here is not to let this tea cool!

MissB thoughtfully added this to my stash sale purchase because it was on my wishlist. Thank you so much!

TeaLady441

Oh no – hope everything is ok!

MissB

Ooh, this has yet to get cold on me, I’ll have to try it. It definitely needs a lower temperature though. I’m glad at least you pampered yourself. :)

Kaylee

D’oh! I already drank all of it. I should probably be steeping whites at a lower temp in general :-/

drank Le Earl Grey by Fauchon

Made this one again. Used 1.5 tsp per 8 oz and steeped for 2 minutes at approx. 90C. I figured that was the best of both worlds. Definitely much more bergamot in this taste this time. It lost a bit of its sweetness but it is not bitter. The base tastes much more of a black tea, I am not getting any greeney flavours, but I think the green smooths the base out a little. The base is just bordering on woody tasting this time. Much better this way.

This tea smells so super delicious. It is deliciously bergamotty. The dry tea even has little shreds off orange peel in it, so it must be good.

I was a bit disappointed in the taste of the tea. It is still a great earl grey, but a bit of a let down considering the smell and that it is a Fauchon tea. It was definitely woody tasting. The bergamot is sweet but very light.

In writing this review, I just noticed this is a mix of black and green tea. In both times I tried this tea, I made it too hot. I will have to adjust my steeping parameters and try again.

i hate black and green blends lol i always mistaken them for black!

Michelle Butler Hallett

I never know what to do with a blend of black and green for water temp: 80C to 85C keeps the green from getting bitter but doesn’t coax out the black, and 100C is way too much for green. Black and oolong is a little easier to manage.
