I GET THIS NOW! I drank 32oz of this cold and I’m TOTALLY getting (or maybe more accurately understanding) the beer flavor and mouth feel now!!! It hit me like a ton of bricks when I took my 1st sip. I’m gonna see if I can get 12 infusions out of this cold like I did hot. While it’s not something I’d reach for every time I want cold tea- this is definitely my new favorite black cold tea… which makes sense cuz this is my favorite non chai or dessert flavored hot tea.

Ok, I know I’ve written 2 different tasting notes for the same portion of leaves already, but I think this is worthy of a 3rd. This is infusion number 11 yes, 11! Steeped 15 min. Very light liquor, but it’s still totally drinkable. It’s back to being very sweet. I think I’m gonna take a cue from the liquor rather than the flavor and call these leaves dead. Finally

I got this from Harney & Son’s (The Store) purely out of curiosity and, quite honestly, fully anticipating to hate it because, save chai, I don’t care for black tea and I hate beer- the only way to make beer worse to me would be to serve it hot, and I drank this hot.

New Conclusions: I really wish we could rate different aspects of teas individually. My rating stands as I don’t think this tastes anything like beer except for the 1st infusion, and even that is severely lacking. That being said, as an unflavored black tea I’d easily give this one a 100. My 100 isn’t the average person’s 100 though. I give this black tea because it does not act, smell, or taste like a black tea. I love how it morphs from a black tea, to almost dry wine-esk, then back and forth between a white, oolong, and raw pu erh. This isn’t what it’s advertised as, but it is AMAZING!

Hmm, very interesting! I guess it’s a good thing it doesn’t taste like beer… but then again, I don’t like beer. But even if I did, I don’t know if tea tasting like beer is a good thing… haha.

Southern Boy Teas

If you are enjoying the base that much, I should tell you that for the Beer tea, we used a single estate Nilgiri black tea. We use it in all of our flavored black teas, but for most we also blend in some Assam for body. I didn’t want the Assam to overpower the light beer flavor in this one, so we left it out.

Nilgiri teas are my personal favorite black teas. They are high grown in the blue mountains and similar to Ceylonese (Sri Lankan) teas, but in my humble opinion, even better.

4th infusion using leaves from last nite, steeped 8 min. Still oolong in taste- aroma and flavor much like the 3rd infusion. Yum!

5th infusion, 9 min. Liquor is lighter and more dull this time. The flavor isn’t weaker, but it is more sweet.

6th infusion, 10 min. Ditto on the liquor and flavor of infusion 9. This is almost like a white tea or cooked pu erh!

7th infusion, 11 min. Whoa… darker liquor this time. Wasn’t expecting that. Almost a brown mustard color. Slightly stronger flavor as well. It’s still sweet, but there’s more body to it.

My 1ST MAN TEA! Well if you don’t count Mayan Chocolate Chai, because that’s a cross over. Emeric from Harney & Son’s ordered it and decided it just wasn’t his cuppa, so he passed it along to me. I really think that our tastebuds are created differently so we can bless others by giving them things we don’t care for.

I’m prefacing this by saying that, save chai, I’m just not a black tea person. And I hate beer. That being said, when it comes to tea- I have to try pretty much everything. The weirder it sounds, the more I want to try it. And if beer tea doesn’t sound weird enough, how’s hot beer tea for ya? Ummm… Yeah…

So anyway, 2.25g tea in 6oz water just below boiling. This is too funny… now this may be because I microwaved my water (microwaving does funky things to water), but as soon as the water hit the tea leaves, it foamed like beer! I’ve seen that occassionally, but unlike other times, when I ran my finger over the foam after decanting it was much thicker. My finger wiped away the foam where my finger had been but left the surrounding foam unaffected. Strange…

The liquor is a basic dark brown that you’d expect from a black tea, no reddish tones. The aroma is mostly of the black tea w/ a very faint hint of beer.

When I taste it, I’m surprised. The flavor profile is exactly like the aroma- mostly black tea w/ a hint of beer. There’s also a lot of dryness to the mouth feel. It reminds me of a very dry wine. It almost makes me feel like there’s sandpaper on my tongue or that I need to brush my teeth.

Conclusions: Very good dry black tea w/ a hint of beer. I don’t think the flavor of beer is strong enough as I’m not sure I could define this as tasting of beer if I didn’t know it was supposed to be.

Yeah my tongue has more balls than most guys. I was visiting my ex out in Seattle one time and watched a quad rugby scrimmage (the Spokane team) and went to the wing bar near campus. I ordered a hell wing (you have to sign a waver for it) and none of the big macho guys did. The were all looking at me like “Oh my gosh, you’re awesome- I’d never do that!”. It was worth almost dying for:)

2nd infusion, 4 min. No foamage Liquor is quite a bit lighter, and reddish. The aroma is dry. This infusion is more like a wine than beer. The mouth feel is still very dry but the flavor is sweet.

Whoa… what the heck? Now this is strange… 3rd infusion, 7 min. Liquor is a burnt orange color, almost like an oolong. And what’s even stranger, is that it tastes like an oolong too! It’s not dry at all and is extremely sweet. Yum! Not being a black tea lover I normally resteep twice at most, if that- but I love this so much I’m going for another! (Gomer Pile voice) Surprise, Surprise, Surprise!

I’m nervous about this one. I’ve had it on the shelf for a month and am just getting the nerve to try it. I’ve since seen 52teas come out with a couple of other bacon teas that I’d rather try than this one but this is the one I have so taste I shall.

I opted to brew it per directions and not look at anyone else’s comments. I’m currently sitting in my chilly house with the sun sparkling off the snow outside and the warmth of the cup filled with hot tea is calming and encouraging me to take a whiff and dive right into the tea. I mean, I love tea. I love bacon. Why NOT combine the two?

Alrighty then. The aroma is bacony and reminds me of that yummy summer salad with the bacon, peas and maybe mayo? I really like that salad and admit to trying to get as much bacon on the serving spoon as possible when I scoop it onto my plate.

When I measured out the tea I could see the bacon that was promised to be inside. That is always a good sign. I think that the steeped tea smells better than the loose tea. The steeped leaves are less strong than the loose tea as well and I find that encouraging since I think the loose tea is a might bit strong.

Enough typing. Time to take a sip.

It tastes like bacon. After a couple of sips I don’t taste a lot of maple, which is ok with me as I was hoping for only a hint. My mind is flying at the ways that I could cook with this tea as opposed to drinking it. I think it would be great as the water for a wildrice dish. I’m so going to try that next week! Yummy!

For a midday cuppa I’m not so sure I’ll do it again unless someone else is here and wants to try it. I just don’t know that milk or sugar would be good with it either. It’s not a bad tea, mind you, just not my first choice. It’s so different, maybe it takes some getting used to?

Now to read what others wrote and see how they are drinking this one. I think I’ll much prefer cooking with it though than drinking it as a cuppa.

UPDATE: didn’t think I’d written this much to begin with so I’ll be brief. After reading other’s comments I added a bit of sugar and it’s amazing how it brings out the maple flavor. It doesn’t make the tea sweet really, just more full-flavored.

with milk and sugar it is just delightful and I can see how delicious it would be with breakfast food. Well, now I’m hungry, so I’m off to fix some lunch!

UPDATE: I brewed up a bit of this and cooked my wild rice in it for a dish and it didn’t seem to add much flavor. Maybe I need to make the tea stronger. I’m not one to cook often with tea. Anyone have suggestions?

Served: Hot

Notes: Adding sugar brought out the maple sweetness more, we both liked it sweetened better. Next we tried adding creme, creme smoothed out the flavors and got rid of the bitter aftertaste. We both won’t buy it again, but we don’t mind having it, or getting it for free.

Smell: Maple, smoke with a subtle hint of bacon
Flavor: Smoked maple tea
Body: Full
Aftertaste: Bitter
Liquor: See through dark brownish orange

A very interesting blend. When I opened the package, I was intrigued by the complex smoky notes of the bacon and slight perfume of the maple flavoring. I hoped these flavors would carry over into a brew. (Generally, I don’t drink black tea straight — it’s way too bitter and I usually need sugar and milk to make it palatable.)

Unsweetened, this stuff is stronger than strong. It’s SKRONG.

Sweetened, the maple and bacon flavors are more pronounced, but overwhelmed by the muskiness of the black tea.

Sweetened (and with milk added), this tea sings. Each sip brings a full-bodied taste of maple and bacon with a slightly smoky aftertaste. It’s not my favorite 52teas blend, but certainly a conversation starter.

I’m not a beer drinker, so I may not be the best qualified to review this one, but it definitely has a hint of beer flavor to it. We also used a nice Nilgiri base for this one, so it is definitely a refreshing iced tea with just a hint of beerishness. Interesting for sure.

I bought this tea for a friend that LOVES bacon, so I wasn’t expecting much (I figured it was more novelty than anything) but I was pleasantly surprised by a tea that mixed sweet and smokey to create a perfect blend of flavorful black tea.

When you first open the bag, the leaves have a strong, sweet smell that reminded me of pralines. There’s a bit of bacon in the aroma as well, though it’s more of a woodsy, smokey smell than a meaty, porky smell.

When you brew it, the aroma mellows out and leaves you with a dark, golden brown/caramel colored tea that has a wonderfully smokey aroma and hints of salty bacon. The smoke definitely overpowers the maple and the bacon though, so don’t expect to be drinking liquid meat. (Which is a good thing.)

Next steep, I’d go a little longer and see if the bacon gets a little stronger, but this is a surprisingly good tea with complex flavors that will be enjoyed by anyone that likes a smokey, hearty tea.

Because this is such an unusual blend, I give it a pretty high rating. It definitely smells like bacon, and the folks around the office got a kick out of it. The brewed tea has a striking (and very thin) layer of grease from the bacon bits. The taste is interesting — maybe not my favorite tea overall, but a lot of fun to drink just because, well, it’s bacon!

I had heard about this tea and knew that since I would not get to try it (from anyone else) I would have to buy it myself.

The scent of the leaves is strong, very strong bacon upfront with a lingering maple smell. Based on the scent of the leaves, I was skeptical that I would like it.

The tea brews nicely, combining the flavor of black tea, with a smoky quality that has to be from the bacon and a sweetness that is coming from the maple. The aroma of the brewed tea is predominantly bacon/smoky and I must say unappealing, but the flavor is not bad.

I think the flavor would be improved by sugar (to bring more of the sweetness out) and by some milk, to maybe help meld the flavors together a little better. I will have to try it and get back to you.

UPDATE:

So I tried it again with milk (1%) and rock sugar, it was better, the flavors did marry more and it was easier to drink. The maple-syrupy flavor is enhanced at the front of the tea, then the bacon/smoky flavor is more pronounced and at the end of the tea, the aroma is also toned down a little so it is no longer like inhaling bacon.

Also, I steeped it a second time (adding milk and sugar) and drank it with breakfast: ham, egg and cheese on a croissant. It was probably a little easier to drink with the food, but the tea still had the descriptive qualities mentioned above.

This improves my rating a little (previously 56). However, as I have said, I do not like to give teas that rely on having additions too high of a score.

Maple Bacon is potentially a novelty tea, but 52teas does transcend the “novelty” by producing an authentic, full-bodied tea. It smells delicious and it’s a good, strong, smoky black tea with a nice overtone of maple. I could see the bacon bits in the tea and I could smell the bacon in the loose tea, but I could not really taste the bacon…perhaps my palate is not subtle enough.

It’s delicious with a lump of brown sugar and if you have some maple sweetener, that would bring out the maple even more.

I have to say that 52teas comes up with varied and ingenious flavors. Each one that I’ve tried ranges from very good to superb so they are certainly not merely a “novelty”. They have a very good “nose” and “tongue” and lovely visuals too.

We did get a great tip from a customer the other day on this: A pinch of SALT actually brings the bacon flavor front and center. Wish I had thought to incorporate that into the blend somehow.
