I have been dying to try this tea since I purchased this a month ago and I finally splurged today. This has a wonderful perfume-y taste. I was thinking jasmine. But then reading the other reviews, I would say more like orange blossom water. The tea base is smooth, warm. As this is some type of fermented white tea , the brew is light and somewhat caramelly. It is quite different and I would definitely recommend it.

Floral and Fruit notes are wonderful both in aroma and taste! Very creamy…naturally! Delicate, sweet, clean…very nice!

This is a FAB peony…very posh!

OMG! I used the word “posh” in a tea review! FINALLY! I can now rest! Mission Accomplished! :P

I don’t want to give this one a BAD rating because I think if someone REALLY likes Jasmine they would adore the fact that it’s intensely jasmine. BUT…I can take or leave Jasmine MOST times. Doesn’t really get much of a rise out of me…so…when I tasted this I was thinking WOW that’s a lot of Jasmine…I wasn’t necessarily in LOVE with the taste because there was a bold bitterness left over from the intense jasmine taste that lingered. BUT…like I said if you like Jasmine you will probably like this…just a little TOO MUCH Jasmine for my taste buds.

According to description claims, quality, aroma, and accuracy to the product description I would probably base my rating…of an 80 but since it’s not really for me…I would say more like a 55-60 based on my own tastebuds. I will meet in the middle for ratings sake here.

LiberTEAS

I haven’t tried this one yet, I will have to try it in a bit… I got a new Yixing mug for my Jasmine teas, I don’t know if I want to christen it with this one though. I am thinking I will probably go with the white tiger for that. And then, maybe try this one tomorrow.

Shang Tea

Hello, thanks for taking time to review our tea! I’m sorry the jasmine tea tasted too strong for you, this tea has the strongest jasmine flavor of our four grades of jasmine white tea. If you still have some left I would recommend brewing the first few steepings at 200-205 for only about a minute and see what you think then!

TeaEqualsBliss

Thanks for the tip Shang! :) I Do LOVE your company!!! I have several other teas I adore from your offerings!!!!

As LiberTEAs mentioned – this tea is perplexing! It says it’s a white tea but it’s really a black tea! :)

Perplexing isn’t always a bad thing because the aroma and flavor of this one is wonderful! VERY aromatic and flavorful! It tastes like tangerine zest or ‘skin’ more than actual tangerine-juiciness. That flavor paired with a heavy floral flavor and tea tastes make this what it is.

I like this because of the tangerine-zest type taste and like I said before…the aroma is out of this world!

If you are ready for a wild ride…try this one out…it will surprise ya!

This tea perplexes me. In reading the bit of information on the sample package, it would be easy to think that this is a white tea, but it is not. I brewed it according to package directions, using boiling water that has cooled for 1 minute, and then steeping for 2 minutes.

The flavor is excellent. The tangerine is strong here, but there is a nice balance between tea and fruit. It tastes sweet, juicy and citrus-y but not overwhelming. I like this very much.

Shang Tea

Hello! Thanks for reviewing our tea and I’m glad you liked it! Just to clarify about the white tea/black tea question that you had, we make this tea by scenting oxidized white tea leaves with tangerine blossoms. It is a black tea, but since we make it using white tea leaves from our farm, it is a smoother, milder black tea.

LiberTEAS

Thank you for that clarification! It makes much more sense to me now! This was a fantastic tea!

I’ve been really enjoying this lately. I might have to start going easy on the leaves and make them stretch out a bit, because otherwise I’ll find myself having to decupboard it long before I’m emotionally ready to do so.

Just that feeling of citrus-y tangerine on the tip of the tongue. It’s exactly like biting a lovely juicy orange citrus fruit. It’s such a treat.

The boyfriend just asked me if this was a Standard and I had to disappoint him. I know channels have been opened now for me to shop at Shang Tea, and my dear Wombatgirl (whose name was unbelievably hard to spell just now) has also issued a standing invitation of buying and forwarding for me. But either way, that’s just to convoluted a way of shopping for me to make it a Standard. That’s a shame. :(

It is, however, still one I’ll revisit when shopping with Shang Tea again either by myself or through my middleman. Er, middle-woman.

This tea is almost legendary. I had a sample of it once from Wombatgirl and I yummed it up as you can see from the rating. And after that it was just… gone. No more Tangerine Blossom for little Ang. Sadface.

Oh well, life goes on.

But then all that lovely Shang Tea customer service business happened and I could make my very own Shang Tea order. Yaaaaaaay! It was of course clear as day that this should be part of the order.

And now I’ve been partly craving it since and partly holding back. At first I was holding back because I didn’t have a tin to put it in, so I couldn’t open the pouch. (It’s a rule. No tin, no opening.) Then I could tin it, but still held back because what if it wasn’t as awesome as I remembered. What if the memory of that lovely tangerine flavoured brew would be tarnished and ruined? Oh woe, almost too much to bear!

And then now, where I decided that I was feeling rather malnourished and deficit in the Vitamin T (get it?) department, and I finally decided I was feeling brave enough to do it.

And you know what? It’s still awesome. Sweetly floral and citrus-y juicy. Just absolutely wonderful.

Indigobloom

LOL Vitamin T! love it :)
and I so get where you are coming from… after having been burnt like that before. Trying a tea you fell in bliss with, and then trying it later to find something ho-hum! a terrible feeling!!!

Wombatgirl sent me this one, and I’ve been curious about it since I took it out of the box. Tangerine blossoms. That sounds really appealing to me, so I didn’t really want to use it because then I wouldn’t have it anymore and the joy of expectation would be gone as well. I admit the latter is probably the biggest problem.

There’s a floral smell of the blossoms, slightly perfume-y and sweet with a surprisingly caramel-y middle. I seriously wasn’t expecting that! Nevertheless, there it is. Unmistakably caramel and honey, with citrus-y tangerine aromas surrounding it. This stuff’s aroma blows my mind! Or… nose, rather. Very very nice!

Oh my word! Did I just take a sip of tea or did I bite a tangerine? This is very tangerine-y in a very natural way. Not a hint of synthetic perfumeiness to be found here. It’s citrus-y and sweet, sugared even. Although there’s a lot of caramel in the aroma, it’s not really in the flavour. It’s more of a mild not too refined sugar here.

So there’s a lot of flavour added here, but it still manages to be a rather delicate little thing. This is a tea that requires a quiet moment of relaxation. You can’t just chug it while doing all sorts of other stuff. Well, you can, but it would be a crying shame.

It’s no secret that I’ve been rather pleased with the Russian blends from Kusmi (with one notable exception), and how they all had some varying amounts of citrus fruit in them. But they don’t really measure up to this. This tastes like what Kusmi tried to achieve.

This tea is an absolute beauty. Please, Steepsterite, if you like citrus fruits and something sweet but not cloying, do yourself a favour and try this one.

This tea is brought to you by one part glee and two parts comfort.

Glee. Mr Prime Minister finally saw fit to announce a general election. It’s about freaking time too; now let’s get it over with. If he had waited until thursday next week it would have been the longest time between general elections ever since the current constitution was passed. (Every four years. The PM can choose any time which works for him, but he can’t go over those four years. Not even by a day.)

Don’t worry, I’m not going to turn political. I certainly know what I’m hoping, but I’ll keep it to myself. There may be some jubilation or drowning of sorrows once the result is in, but otherwise I shan’t bother you.

Comfort 1 I have a cold. Again. I’m pretending it doesn’t exist, but I would like the comfort.

Comfort 2 This was not even supposed to be a factor originally, and it’s brought on by the fact that I apparently tinned this in a tin with a very tight fitting lid. A VERY tight fitting lid. Very. I’m sure you can guess where this is going.

Maybe half a pot’s worth on the floor. That’s a lot when you only bought around 25 grams and my floors are not in any sort of state for leaf salvation.

So as you can see, I have ample reason to bring out the big guns here. This tea is going to have to infuse me with some energy and optimism. Only the Very Best will do under such circumstances.

Ashley Bain

oh no :( I have done this. tins can be evil.

Kashyap

dont know if its allergies or a cold..but if you need a nice comfort tea that has some health jazz…find some white chrysanthemum or the Burdock mint oolong from Naivetea is a nice eye opener :) hope you feel better and like it says in our local free paper “everything is political”

Angrboda

Ashley, I know! I was totally not expecting it to do that since it’s not a new tin. I’ve used it before. I usually cut the label off the bag the leaves comes in, though, and squeeze that in between tin and lid as a way of labelling the tins. I don’t want a lot of adhesive on the tins. I suspect that label might have been partly at fault here.

Kashyap, I think it’s a cold, because I’ve never been prone to allergies. I know they can start late in life, but I haven’t seen any other symptoms or pollen-patterns yet that corroborates with allergy. The boyfriend is just getting over a cold now as well. I suspect we’ve been infecting each other back and forth since moving in together.

Jenn

I have spilled tea in exactly the same way! There’s no sense in crying over spilled tea, but my eyes have swelled with tears a time or two.

Please take care of yourself and feel better soon. August is a silly month for a cold, but I just got over a bad one and I know several other people who have too. Take some tea and rest. Repeat often :)

Angrboda

Hey, I just had a thought. This was the first week back at work after my holiday. Maybe I’m allergic to work!!!

ssajami

This is a well known affliction. It’s called Work Re-adjustment Syndrome. It is most common in the post-vacation stage, and can last for about a week. There is no cure. However it has been clinically proven to be eased somewhat by drinking lots of tea. Particularly the kind you love the most. No sampling, or drinking the so-so kinds of teas. No, no, no. For this syndrome, only the big guns will do the trick.

Sound real enough, no? As if any of us need an excuse to drink tea :)

Feel better!

Fantalicious and awesometastic. That’s this tea in a nutshell, really.

A short while ago I alluded to having been exposed to some really awesome customer service and I’ve been sitting on that story until I actually had some tea from the company in question. See, here’s the thing. I have been priviledged enough to have Steepster friends who have shared with me samples of Shang Tea’s products. Each and every one I’ve tried have impressed me. (This may have something to do with their teas being Fujian teas, which have I ever mentioned is my favourite tea producing area?) Anyway, it was only natural that I should go and look up their website, just on the off chance that shipping to Europe wouldn’t be horrible. There was a mention of a flat rate which sounded cool, but not about which area that covered.

So I sent them an email, asking about it and what it would cost to ship something to Denmark. Unfortunately their reply said something in the vicinity of $40… I coughed, hacked and resigned myself to the fact that I would have to use kindly disposed Steepsterites as middle men if I were to buy any of their stuff. This is the reason I have a tendency to not bother looking up American companies before automatically assuming them out of my reach. $40 was on the high end yes, but in general American companies who can ship at a for me reasonable shipping fee are few and far between. No tea is good enough for me to want to pay more than $15 for shipping as the very most.

Time passed. I got over it. I forgot about it. Then one morning I woke up to an email from Shang Tea saying ‘o hai, in response to your previous question two months ago, we looked into it and can now offer you shipping at around $13 dollars to Denmark. Would you like to buy some tea? Email order, paypal money and so on and so forth.’ Or something to that effect.

That was quite a shipping fee difference! And just the fact that they answered my question and still proceeded, without my begging or prompting or wheedling or anything, to see if they couldn’t do me one better. I’m very impressed with this, and I’m going to come back for more if they will let me shop that way again. (The order form on their site wouldn’t accept a non-American address).

I picked up the package yesterday from the post office and have tinned two of them this morning. There are still two other pouches in there that I’m not allowed to open until I’ve freed up tins, but I can deal with that.

And that is how I came to share a pot of Golden Needle King with the boyfriend this morning. Isn’t this just a wonderful tea? It’s all smooth and slippery and dark in flavour. It’s almost ever so slightly milky. Lots and lots of that Fujian-ness that makes it my favourite area. Grainy with dark fruity and spicy notes to it. Lots of cocoa notes as well and a caramel-like aftertaste.

Steepsterites, go try this one out for yourselves. I implore you. It’s pricy, but you will NOT regret it. And on the off-chance that you do, feel free to punish me for leading you astray by making me use up the rest of your leaves. :)

ScottTeaMan

I’m glad you got such a nice surprise withe reasonable shipping and a great tea!

wombatgirl

Seriously, the gentleman who owns this shop is really nice. This story warms my heart, but does not surprise me. They’re just a good place. :)

Jenn

I love it when a proprietor cares more about sharing their product, and creating a happy, loyal customer base than their own bottom line. Yay for the power of good tea!

The Seattle Tea Snob

Well your a good sales person, you’ve sold me and now they are on my list of teas to buy this month, probably pick up fifty grams of the Golden Needle King so if you’ve led me astray I’m going to be very put out. :)

But smooth and slippery? really now? :P

wombatgirl

BTW – I was at the store this last weekend, and we talked about you. I got to tea geek out with one of the lovely people who works there, and try lots of new teas (have you tried their Pao Blossom…. Me Likey!!) He does read our reviews BTW. (Not the owner guy, but the other lovely gentleman, whose name I’ve completely forgotten… oops!)

Angrboda

Wombatgirl, yes I’ve had a sample of it. It’s not very often that I find a white or green that I really like, usually they’re just nice and some more nice than others. Furthermore I’m not a big fan of floral scented, it frequently winds up tasting like soap or perfume to me. So it was quite a suprise to me how much I actually enjoyed the Pao Blossom. I looked it up just now and I gave i 89 points. I thought it had some strong notes of grapefruits to it, but the aroma was rather overwhelming, if not, with my reservations towards floral scented, downright stinky.

Nicole

Shang is just a super guy. Truly knows his tea and really cares about his customers as well as his products. I have not had a tea from Shang Tea that I didn’t like, even the whites that aren’t normally my thing.

My mother and I discovered the shop last Christmas. Shang spent probably 20 minutes with us, cupping teas for us to taste and explaining about his tea plantation, how they harvest and cure for the different kinds of teas. Even if his teas weren’t simply the best I’ve had, I’d still go back, simply because of that personal touch.

Golden Needle King is fabulous. Smooth and slippery is a perfect description.

This tea has been extremely carefully picked out. It’s a celebration choice. I’ve had it once before when Wombatgirl sent me two whole samples of it. I used one then and saved the other for a special occasion. Then, in the enormous box from Pamela Dax Dean there was another sample of it, so now I can have it for the second time and still have one left to save for later. How awesome is that?

The first time I had it was after having reached 50K words on NaNoWriMo, so it was my celebration tea then. It will be my celebration tea again today for having looked at a huge flat with the boyfriend and decided to take it. And it is indeed huge, it’s bigger than my parents’ house. Used to be a grocery shop so it’s got a funny, quirky layout and an almost triangular room. Strangely enough that quirkyness is one of the things about it that really appeals to me. So we accepted it and are awaiting the contract for signing now. YAY!

If that is not call for celebration then I don’t know what is! So therefore, very carefully, I picked out something I knew would be fabulous but also in short supply (for me) so that it would feel extra-exotic to drink it.

The aroma of this is just awesome. So very malty sweet and grainy, just exactly that rye bread note that I’ve come to look for in particular when smelling tea. The same note that these days I seem to find in just about everything. A wee bit of prickly spicyness in it too, which makes me think of fresh pinewood.

Oh gosh, I just got a great big whiff of sweetness on the first sip. Something completely caramel-y sweet. Unfortunately the second sip didn’t give me that same note again, so possibly it was a fluke. It did have a cocoa-ish sort of note to it. A clear one, but not very heavy. It works awesomely well with the pine wood-y notes in the flavour. (The colour of this flavour is warm orange. Like the ‘meh’ face on the Steepster rating bar, only a bit darker)

The first time I had it, I compared it to the beloved Tan Yang Te Ji, only somewhat lighter in flavour. I stand by that comparison today as well. I can see some more differences between the two this time, I think, like for example the pine, but all in all it’s got that same sort of ‘root’.

I’m a big fan of this one. Go forth and try it out, Steepsterites.

Wombatgirl sent me this one in our last swap and I’ve been sort of saving it a bit. The sample came in this nice little golden bag, see, which made me feel like it ought to be saved for some kind of celebrating occasion.

And now I’ve got one! NaNoWriMo progress: 50,277 words. Ten days to spare. 1½ scene to go and I’ll have a finished first draft as well. And thus I have bragged about that, and can go back to the tea.

I put the leaves straight into my little pot, so I forgot to smell the dry leaf first, but the aroma of the steeped brew is really nice. It’s got a heavy sort of bottom note to it with some semi-fruity spicy notes to it. I wonder if this is what people are talking about when they say figs and dates? I don’t eat (or like) either, so I wouldn’t really know. I do like that note in tea, though. (I was concentrating so hard on working out the aroma here, that I actually managed to accidentally dip my nose in it…) I’m picking up a hint of cocoa and a wee bit of smoke too, but I’m not sure if it’s contamination from the Tan Yang Te Ji (♥) that I had earlier.

No, that is definitely NOT contamination. The wee bit of smoke probably is, but not the cocoa. SO not the cocoa. There is a very distinct cocoa note here and there’s some caramel as well on the finish and the aftertaste.

It actually does remind me a little of the aforementioned Tan Yang. It’s not as aggressive and as heavy as the Tan Yang, it’s more like a Tan Yang Light, but it’s got several of the same key elements.

At the very beginning of the sip there is the cocoa and underneath that a body of the fruity-spicy note that formed most of the aroma as well, and then on the finish there’s a heavy caramel.

This is absolutely gorgeous, and I’m lucky because Wombatgirl actually sent me TWO samples of this one. I shall save the other one for a special occasion I think.

wombatgirl

Just let me know if you want more. Their storefront is here in Kansas City, and I’m always looking for excuses to go there. They’re really nice at the shop, and when I told them I was sending stuff to you in Denmark, they got really excited. :)

Angrboda

I looked at their site and they have a flat shipping rate. I think I might have to enquire as to whether that’s world wide or just america. If it’s world wide it’s very reasonable indeed, but I couldn’t find anything about whether they shipped internationally or not.

It’s a sad state of affairs when one’s crazy work life prevents one from trying new teas. It is an absolute tragedy that my abbreviated routine prevented me from trying this wonderful tea for more than a month. Wombatgirl is right. This is an excellent substitute for Dawn tea. One sip this morning and I was delighting in the sweetness and notes of cocoa and caramel.

After the second sip I ran to the kitchen to get the package so that I could immediately order a quantity of it from Shang Tea. If there is anything the Dawn tea debacle convinced me of it is that the right time to lose oneself in tea is the present moment and the right time to buy a tea one loves is immediately lest they run out or go out of business.

It is quite, quite good. I’m so very glad my life slowed down enough for me to try it.

It’s just been crazy here! Most of my mornings I don’t have time for tea and am never at my desk long enough for tea. So rather than trying new teas when I get a scrap of tea time, I’ve been relying on Adagio’s Black Dragon Pearls.

It is a wonderful tea and better in some ways than Dawn. It does not have the level of cocoa taste, but it is sweeter. I’ve kept some Dawn for special occasions and I had it yesterday and was able to compare.

Made a pot of this thanks to Teafreak, who traded with me. (How are you guys bolding each other’s names?)

I’m really impressed with the way this looks. It’s like silver needle plus some sort of flat-leafed white tea, and then mixed half and half with dried honeysuckle flowers and buds.

It’s very mellow, even when brewed for a little over three minutes. It has a slightly vegetal taste, and sort of grassy also. It finishes with that white tea aftertaste that’s satisfying and mild. I can’t say that the honeysuckle taste is very strong, but it’s there and I really enjoy it. It’s more in the scent of the tea once it’s brewed. Reminds me of spring!

Diving into the package from Wombatgirl once again, and this is what I found. I haven’t really been feeling in the mood for white much for a while, but since I started the day on green (I was lazy. Couldn’t be arsed to rinse out the pot so I just resteeped) I was feeling more in that sort of mindset today.

One of the things that always tend to surprise me with a lot of white teas is the colour of the leaves. I want them ALL to be silver! Because, you know, it’s a white tea! But they’re not, and I can’t seem to get the fact into my head that a white tea can have primarily dark leaves. (It’s a good thing that I learned much later that oolongs are also sometimes called blue teas or I’d have been seriously confused!)

The next surprise came when I sniffed the dry leaves. Chocolate? Chocolate??? What??
I smelled several times, and I smelled after breathing on them first and the aroma insisted on being chocolate. I’ve never met that in a white before! It smells natural though. Not contamination-like. Oddness. O.o

It’s got a fairly deep yellow colour after steeping, but then I did steep a whole minute. Maybe that’s a little much, but I tend to have difficulties with whites and steeping time. I can’t seem to decide if I like them very shortly steeped or a little longer. I keep changing my mind. At any rate it’s a warm yellow, a rather lovely colour, really, and nicely transparant.

It smells very fresh now and the funny chocolate note is nearly gone away. It’s sort of spooking around at the very bottom of the aroma, but primarily I smell something slightly grassy and very floral.

It tastes quite nice. It reminds me of a Dragonwell actually, with that semi-salty viscous flavour. I’m not really sure how big a fan I am of that, but it’s not overwhelming here. After the cup cools down a little more it’s further subdued. At this point it’s got a rather floral taste. It’s like drinking a mouthful of little spring flowers.

It’s very nice and very delicate cup, but by no means something I could drink a lot of at the time. One cup seems to me to be just about enough, and then it’ll be a while before I’ll be in the mood for another one. A bit like if you eat chocolate with a higher percentage of cocoa, like around 70% or something. It’s still very good, but you don’t need or want to eat as much as if it had been milk chocolate.

I feel the need to give it a high rating even if it doesn’t reflect whether or not it’s something I would like to be able to drink often or whether or not I’ll miss it when it’s gone. Because it is good. It’s just also very filling.

Shang Tea

Angrboda,

I’m glad that you had an opportunity to try our tea, and that you enjoyed it! I just wanted to mention that this tea is actually a wu-long that is processed using white tea leaves from our tea farm. That is why you don’t see the silver color in the leaves but darker leaves instead and also why is has a richer taste.

Please let me know if you have any further questions, I’d be happy to answer them!

Argh. I’m having tea fail this morning. I can tell this tea is going to be yummy, but I keep forgetting about it when I’m steeping it, and making it bitter. Which is so sad.. I can see this will be good, but I keep messing it up for myself.
