drank Milk Oolong | Jin Xuan by Tealux
2291 tasting notes

Finally, Canada Post delivered my order!

This tea is really neat. The other oolong I have smells like seaweed, but this one smells like sweetened condensed milk. I did a 10 second rinse, and a 1 minute steep, and lost about 1/4 of my mug of water to the leaves! Steeped, it smells a little green and grassy, and strongly of sweetened condensed milk. The taste is a little astringent, and a little bitter (perhaps 1 minute was too long) (EDIT: Neither astringent nor bitter, once it’s cooled to a better temperature. It’s amazingly smooth.), but does NOT taste strongly of seaweed like that other oolong does. There is a sweet milky caramel-y flavour (or more dulce de leche?) that is really lovely.

So far, so good. Hopefully this one doesn’t upset my stomach like the other, because I’m really enjoying sipping this!

Oh man. I’m so excited to try all these new teas. I kind of want to stay home and drink cup after cup, but I do need to go to work once I’ve finished lunch.

OMG. Cup two is even better. More milkiness, with none of that mouth coating that actual milk gives. OM NOM NOM. Ok. Now I’m going to head to work!

drank Cream Irish Breakfast by Tealux

Anything cream, I’m game! The leaves are odd, since they range from really long and twisty to tiny little pieces. I don’t smell any cream in the leaves, but I do smell a really robust tea coming my way! I steeped for four minutes, which I probably shouldn’t have… because WHOA, this one kicks. It’s very full bodied! Very strong! Kind of bakey. On the verge of bitter, but I like it like that sometimes. I like how the caffeine meter on the packages of Tealux teas never make it to the top, this one shows barely half way so I don’t want to know what the most caffeine would do! The package also says this tea is from India and is USDA Organic. The steep color is reddish brown. I really don’t get much of a cream flavor (and it really could have used more with a tea this strong) but there is a flavor here that seems like it is banana to me. So basically this tastes like a rye bread with banana in it. Weird, but good! This might be too strong for those who don’t like tough teas, but this is exactly the type of tea I need more of! I think I’ll have a second cup with some of that Bailey’s Cheesecake cream!

Ancient Alphabet challenge – H

Even after all these years, the flavor here is still unique and memorable. More of a syrupy flavor or MAYBE honey than anything remotely “pistachio”. But I sometimes crave the flavor profile here that I have never found in any other tea.

edited to add: I thought Angry Tea Room had this for sale, but nope, it’s gone now.

Did I get the right tea? I don’t see the pistachios at all. The biscotti looks like almonds (but I don’t know much about biscotti.. I think it’s like a crispy cookie?) And what should be honey flakes look like coconut to me. The taste is delicious anyway. Very sweet! And it is cookie-like. The black tea is pretty mild, but that lets the flavors shine. I was really hoping this would be a nice pistachio blend. It’s good but the name isn’t accurate!

Uh I’m sick of winter. How many months of winter are left? Some mornings my throat is so dry that even tea doesn’t help (and I don’t snore! :D) I don’t know WHAT I did before I was drinking tea. I see the good in everything though, so I think winter just helps me appreciate the warmer months more. And it would be boring if it was always the same season… though I wouldn’t mind if it was permanently autumn!

You are cordially invited to join the Steepster Chapter of the I Hate January Club :) Gray days…skin that feels like corrugated cardboard…I’ll take perpetual October, too!

I know… the list of terrible winter things could go on forever, but I won’t mention anything else! sigh.

MsWhatsit

Yeah, it’s a little annoying when the tea doesn’t seem to match the name, but it does sound good.

I may have to check out that I hate January club too…

With the first sip, I thought this one tasted as odd as the name. But it turns into delicious. I wanted to try this one because it has dates in it. I LOVE the 52Teas Date Walnut Muffin tea. This is very tropical…pineapple! I just wish they hadn’t put in all these fruit leaves… the idea is just weird. There is hibiscus here, but I think my steep only got one leaf in it, so it doesn’t taste like hibiscus. I think this one would be a nice answer to sugar cravings. The fruit is mixed with just enough sugar. I think I should have put more tea in my infuser to make it even better, but I’ll have to wait for one of the infuser baskets for that.

Tealux.ca has THREE maple teas… maybe because Tealux is in Canada? The dry leaves and tea certainly SMELL like maple… very sweet. It looks like there are little rocks/crystals of maple in the blend, with nice black tea. Also some peppercorns, though those aren’t listed in the ingredients. The flavor is a bit odd at first. I’m not sure how to describe it. It’s not a flavor I’ve had before and I can’t tell if it is the tea leaves or the maple. But it has a maltiness to it. And somehow the maple isn’t very present until the tea isn’t burning hot. The top of the tea had a sparkly residue on the top that seemed to be in two layers. When I moved the cup, one of the layers would move right, and the layer underneath it would move left. Interesting! Otherwise it’s a very muddy colored tea. I like this one! I can’t wait to try the other Tealux samples…

Ashmanra’s sipdown challenge – February 2024 Tea #3 – February 13 – Mardi Gras!

I always admired the photo for this tea.  It must have all the colors in it.  So it was beyond time to sip this down, especially for this colorful prompt.

2023 Ode To Tea – Part II – F

I am loath to actually finish this one, as it has one of the tea photos I love the most on the Steepster profile. Such a rainbow of colors. But I have ONE steep session remaining with this one. The flavor is mellow and capital P Pleasant. It’s a great balance/mix of ingredients so I can appreciate that this is named “Feng Shui”.

Ancient Alphabet challenge – F

This one has been a longtime revisiting. I like the idea from the description:
“Feng Shui Wellness Blend has the goal to create harmony between human beings and their surroundings. In order to create this, the perfect balance between oneself and the five elements wood, fire, earth, metal and water has to be achieved. According to Feng Shui, the elements are represented by the colors green, red, yellow, silver and blue as well as the forms twined, pointy, flat, round and curly which all represent an ingredient in our herb tea blend. Add the fifth element WATER yourself”

They also included lots of orange in color: orange peel and carrot. haha. I’d say the ingredients ARE in harmony, as they are seamlessly tasting well enough together…or they are simply old and muted by now. I’m definitely noticing the eucalyptus more than I would have before. My original note for this said “I like samples, it takes me forever to get through even an ounce of tea.” Apparently it also takes me forever to get through SAMPLES. sheesh. This is a tasty double steep though. It sure is colorful, but I guess that was the point.

Kittenna

I feel you on that samples comment! Haha. I have so many samples I haven’t gotten through either – however, they are considerably less daunting than the 25 or 50g I have of certain other teas when I only wanted a sample size to begin with (looking at you, DavidsTea. Urgh.)

So I ordered about 23 or so samples from Tealux. They had a sale! I like samples..I can’t help it! I have so many samples, it would take me forever to get through any ounces of tea, so I choose samples. Sadly, they didn’t have any of the Russian Maple Souchong… which is the reason I ordered from them in the first place. This will be the first of many I will be writing tasting notes for.

I thought this would be a fitting tea to drink last night: New Year’s Eve! It seems like it’d be a healthy tea to start the year with right. I love the rainbow of colors in the blend and the idea that all the elements are here— earth, fire, wood, metal, water. Well, I hope there isn’t any metal in here though. The steep color is a bright reddish orange. The flavor is great for a herbal tea.. but I think the lemon grass and the blackberry leaves are making it a little more medicinal than I’d like. I really can’t stand blackberry leaves in a tea.

Uniquity

I’ve always shied away from samples on the basis of “if I love it and only have a little then I’ll be sad.” Starting to re-think that as I want new tea (despite not needing it)!

MsWhatsit

I love samples. That way, if I don’t like it, I’m not stuck with large amounts, but if I do, I can order a large amount.

TeaLady441

I find samples are essential! I can’t afford to try all the new teas otherwise, and I can justify it because I’m so new to tea. Better to try ALL THE TEAS and see what’s great, then pick those up at the next sale. I already ordered a few from Zen Tea based just on the freebies they gave us.

tea-sipper

The way I see it: If I have over 200 kinds of tea samples, I won’t even be drinking the majority of teas twice a year, so if I have samples with only a few teaspoons instead of ounces, the tea won’t be bad before I drink it.
