This has quickly become my daily tea. Lovely smell, taste, and colour.

Survives at least three steeps (western style) at 3, 4, and 5 mins each.

Not a huge fan. Compared to the Li Shan Oolong I’ve been drinking, this just doesn’t hold up in my opinion. I used a whole 7 gram sample in my 5oz Finum. Found it ultimately unremarkable. Pale color. Pale on flavor. Maybe I’m missing something here? I won’t be coming back to this one. Making this note so I’m more dialed into what I don’t like, rather than what I do.

Steep times started at about 1 min, thereafter increasing the time by roughly 1/2 − 1, 1 1/2, 2 1/4, 3 3/8, etc).

I’m a fan. One of my favorite oolongs. I don’t have much to say in regards to a description. I just shut down my critical mind I was so taken by this tea.

I’m almost exclusively a green tea guy. But this fall and winter I’ve found myself losing the taste a bit and longing for something different. I enjoy oolongs every now and then, along with some black teas and pu-erh, but I was looking for a departure, without going too far from green.

This tea gives me much of what I enjoy about greens while bringing a more overt profile. It has a complexity and some light spice notes along with floral qualities that don’t overwhelm. The liquor has a lovely, golden hue and the substantial, almost meaty leaves steep for many a forgiving infusion (starting at about 1 min, thereafter increasing the time by roughly 1/2 − 1, 1 1/2, 2 1/4, 3 3/8, etc). The mouthfeel is viscous and yet light; strangely paradoxical.

OK… maybe I had a thing of two to say. Maybe I’ll have more to say… I’m off to Teavivre to stock up before this find is a thing of the past.

Tea brewed in my double wall glass Finum. Nice balanced stimulating effect. Not sure of the theanine content of this guy, but I’m guessing the mouthfeel is a result of amino acids. Hoping that includes theanine. It feels like it to me.

It’s been a cold few days. Pups are very clingy heat leeches lately. :)

THere’s nothing like a hot cup of tea on a cold day. It just warms you from the belly out.
This is a particularly nice green. The first impression is of a savory green. Like toasted soy beans. But there’s also a nice surprising sweet floral finish. I had two pieces of mint chocolate with this tea. very nice combo. :D

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year! And I cannot agree with you more that there’s nothing like a hot cup of tea on a cold day.

Second keemun of the day, comparing to the keemun grade 1 I just tried. The leaves of this premium keemun were a bit smaller than the grade 1 but they appeared to all be the same shape and size.

The smell of the brewed tea is slightly smokey but also a lot more of a sweet smell. The tea tastes very smooth and clean, no astringency. There is a slight bitter smoke taste, but it is a good taste. There is a sweet, red fruit taste, maybe a bit of currant. There is not much earthy taste like I had with the grade 1. There is a bit of a metallic aftertaste that lingers, it tingles on my tongue.

I referred to the grade 1 as a gulping tea, and this one is more of the sipping tea.

I am unsure as to what the grades suggest. I assume it is to do with the quality of the tea but I would like to know what it refers to. I did a quick internet search and did not come up with much. This is the teavivre info page: http://www.teavivre.com/info/guide-to-choose-high-quality-keemun-black-tea. It discusses different grades of keemun but then changes to discusses Grade A, B, and C. I assume that could be synonymous with the grades but I have no idea.

So anyway, this tea smells strongly earthy and more vegetal than smokey. It is smooth, but not the smoothest keemun I have had. There is a slight smokey flavour, I would describe it as more rustic. There is also a bit of an earthy flavour. There is just a touch of astringency on the back of my palate towards the end of the sip but it goes away really quick. There is just a tinge of sweetness.

This reminds me of a gulping tea, not a sipping tea. It is the tea you drink down with your breakfast, it tastes really good but you are not stopping to notice any subtleties or nuances of the tea.

This is a lovely tea. I used my whole sample packet and steeped for one minute.

The wet leaves smell creamy and rich. The taste is at first very floral, and becomes more vegetal as the cup cools. The creamy sweetness appears almost immediately, and is on the front of the sip, not the end as some other Oolongs I’ve tasted are. The creaminess dissipates, or is less noticeable, as the vegetal notes become more prominent. As far as vegetal taste, this tastes more spinach-y than grassy. Aftertaste is sweet, like I just ate fresh garden peas and perhaps some flowers. :)

This resteeps well too. I would recommend this to those who enjoy floral, vegetal, creamy tea. If you are looking for a roasted oolong, this is not it! :)

Thanks again to Angel and Teavivre for this delicious sample!

Thanks for this fine sample Teavivre!
I’m generally a green tea drinker, straying into black, but also a lover of the whites (Silver Needles and Bai Mu Dan)
ALL for their distinct personalities.
This Xin Yang Mao Jian Green is a stronger green falling somewhere between a good Dragon Well and the quieter Bi Luo Chun. Next to The Dragon Well, It’s a hair more smoky than toasty, still brightly vegetal, with sweet hay notes, with some astringency but no bitterness.
This is definitely a green I want to keep in my larder as a nice counterpoint to the (always favorite) Dragon Well.

Backlog:

Beautifully fragrant Oolong! Sweet, floral and fruity!

My first cup was sweet and creamy. Lighter than the subsequent infusions which is par for the course. Faint vegetal notes, prominent floral notes.

My subsequent cups were much stronger in flavor. Not quite as creamy as the first cup, though. More floral notes to dance upon the palate. Notes of apple begin to emerge in later infusions.

Angel of Teavivre sent me samples of this in a recent order. I’m very grateful for the samples Teavivre is willing to send out, & for their wonderful & delicious high quality teas!

I usually choose short gongfu steepings for Dan Congs, but today I went with a regular cup, making 3 steepings: 1 min, 2min, & 5min. Steeped this way, I’m getting an interesting mix of grapes & incense. Later comes a juicy & tangy grapefruit, & the flavors & aroma linger long after the sip is gone, rising into the soft palate & sinuses to create what I call an ‘after aroma’. As always, Angel’s samples are generous, so I’ll be able to try this more than one way. Admittedly, I prefer teas such as this one steeped in the yixing, but I’ll save that for another day.

I think I would have to say this is one of the best oolongs teas I’ve had!
The reason for this is I was able to get amazing flavor steep after steep. It was also my first time trying a roasted oolong.

One of my free samples from Teavivre…
This tisane makes a refreshing, bright, juicy beverage! It looks like cranberry juice, and even tastes a bit like a fruit-cocktail flavored cranberry juice (but without the bitterness of cranberries). The sample pack I received made 16 ounces. I sweetened it with 1 1/2 teaspoons of sugar. I’m drinking half of it hot, and I’m saving the rest to drink cold. This will probably be a go-to drink for me in the warmer months. :)

This is my first pu-erh, and I am so happy Angel picked this one out for me as part of my free sample package! The smell is of fresh, clean, wet hay. I specify “fresh” and “clean” hay because some reviewers liken the smell of this tea to that of a barnyard, but that makes me think of manure and sweaty farm animals. Strangely enough, the smell of this pu-erh reminds me of the fog machines in haunted houses. They have a particular smell that this is reminiscent of. I know, that’s very weird, but bear with me! :)

The very first odor that hit my nose when I opened the package of dry tea was “fish food.” But the smell and flavor of the tea once it’s steeped is not fishy at all. It’s actually very mellow with an earthy aftertaste. I imagined pu-erh would be very pungent and strong, but this is smooth and almost has a slight sweetness to it. I think I’m in love…

Thanks to Nicole_Martin for the sample. Roasted, toasted, sesame sweet curled unfurled green leaves. Definitely tastes different from what I drink. No teaball, sugar, honey needed.

drank Rose Dian Hong Black Tea by Teavivre
1719 tasting notes

Waking up so early is starting to take its toll on me. I drank green tea all morning because I was awake. Chugged a Mtn Dew with lunch but it has since faded. I need go-go juice. Reached in the drawer for a Yunnan, came out with this one. Finished off the sample. I leafed a little heavier than my normal. The result is a little more rose than I noted the first time. As soon as the cup cooled the rose faded some allowing the glorious Dian Hong to rise up and give me the boost I needed to make it through the afternoon. A very nice rose black tea.

Stephanie

Heh, Mountain Dew. Do you have Ski in your area of Indiana?

K S

I have seen it but not tried it. Mellow Yellow is OK but its too easy to chug.

Lala

You could do what Honey Boo Boo does and mix pixie stix in red bull and chug that! Ha ha. (I take no responsibility for you actions after you drink that though) :P

K S

Showing my age but… Red Bull – Eeewww. Think I’ll just turn in early :D

Stephanie

Ski is like a THING in my corner of Indiana for some reason. And Grippos, ha!

drank Rose Dian Hong Black Tea by Teavivre
1719 tasting notes

I thought about just copying my blog review but I’ll try not to repeat myself. I enjoyed reading the reviews by others. For some this is highly rose. For some its very delicate. Not being overly experienced with rose tea I have tried enough to know this is a very well behaved tea. I used half my sample and steeped 4 minutes. Zero bitterness. No rough edges. The cup scent has enough rose to make me nervous but the sip is very different. It begins with a wonderfully smooth Dian Hong followed by the rose. Then the two flavors come together, neither overpowering the other. The creamy mix passing into a sweet aftertaste. When the tea base and the flavoring are this well balanced I have to say – Wonderfully done!

It was nicely floral and complex.

I ordered some of the sample sachets of this with my BF Teavivre order. On the package, they recommend boiling water, but I used 195. The oolong is almost creamy in a way and the strawberry flavor is light and pleasant. I probably could have done without it, but I added a bit of sweetener. Currently going on my 2nd steep.
