Lord Petersham’s Secret
Just the thing for a military man’s flask
Pour one cup of strong black tea, add rum and stir.
Backlog:
I was so thrilled when I saw this tea in the Amoda box back in May. (Yes, that’s how far behind I am. Yes, I hear Sil saying “she’s never going to get caught up” and laughing about it. It’s not funny Sil. I’ll get caught up. Just … quit laughing at me, Sil.)
Anyway … I love this tea. I love it. One of the very best black tea blends I’ve ever tried. This is like top-notch awesome. Like the awesome-est of the awesome awesomeness.
Here’s my full-length review: http://sororiteasisters.com/2013/05/19/lord-petersham-black-tea-blend-from-the-devotea/
My 2nd, & final tea of the morning was a pot of his Lordship, a tart & tangy contrast to the Imperial mojiang.
And now the waiting begins…
I’m supposed to be at the hospital at 1:00. Until then I’m going to kill time with a variety of small tasks, & maybe a hot bath.
Thanks everyone! I wish you all could sign my cast! http://instagram.com/p/uHcCD3D8sg/?modal=true
Another morning tea, enjoyed with breakfast. I love the name of this tea, which coupled with the taste, brings to mind a pipe smoking, tweed wearing, sherlock holmes looking character. LOL
Recently there was a discussion about whether this was a breakfast blend or an afternoon blend. For me, definitely breakfast! Although I’d be happy to drink a pot any time!
Thanks Terri. There’s more information about Lord Petersham himself, here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Stanhope,_4th_Earl_of_Harrington
Day 4 of Ms Theresa’s Breakfast Blend Protocol!
This is a blend of 7 black teas, and the most noticeable feature (today) is a tart lemoniness that lingers after the sip. Not as bold as I remember it initially being, but this tea may be a bit different each time I drink it, due to the mix of so many leaves & the level of shaking/mixing involved. Today it is bright & lemony, for sure, with a rich base.
The subtle differences that you are detecting are mainly due to the presence in all our teas of single estate, small garden teas. These do have a year-on-year variance.
Rather than try to blend these variations out, we prefer to enjoy them: is’t like running into an old friend with a new hairstyle.
Most of our teas will do vary year on year, and Lord P has more teas in it than any other.
The other fact or some of teas, most notably the chais, is settling of heavier spices to the bottom. I just made the last of my tin of Lemongrass and Ginger White Tea, and it was exceptionally gingery.
My last cup of this, for now. I’ve really enjoyed this one, & will probably re-order at some point (when I have money again).
I really enjoyed it when it was in my Amoda box! Too bad they don’t have good international shipping options, though I remember hearing from them awhile back that maybe something could be arranged… Maybe I should email them. :P
Email me directly on [email protected]. And I will see what can be done.
I love the name of this tea, as well as the backstory, that his lordship had a different black tea for each day of the year! He is my hero! I love black tea so much, in all it’s various shapes, sizes, flavor nuances, ect. I haven’t counted lately, but I’m certain that if I only drank 1 tea a day, I have enough black tea in my current collection to drink a different one every day for 3 months. Of course, I generally drink 2 or 3…probably more, lol, each day. Including all of my teas, I could definitely drink a different tea every day of the year, but who, among us, only drinks one tea a day? :D
I met his Lordship before, thanks to an introduction by cavocorax. I originally wanted to sample this tea because of the name & the backstory. Without a doubt, his lordship is a bearded man, who smokes a Meerschaum on occasion, likes the hunt, laughs often, takes his tea black & bold, but is, like all Lords should be, refined. This tea is rich, thick, savory, & chewy like a homemade loaf of pumpernickel rye, with a tangy citrus marmalade edge. This tea is the reason I was perusing the Devotea website to begin with. I’m glad I did.
Sipdown!
Thank you, Cavocorax, for sharing your sample of this tasty blend of teas with me! I had breakfast with his lordship, while Tony invited the Earl of Grey.
Petersham is a fine fellow, & I’d be glad to take tea with him anytime!
Yeah, who would have thought it. Me, just a musician trying to get by, & all of a sudden I got Lords & Earls coming for breakfast, Friends visiting me in the tub, the Vicar…the damn Vicar, I tell you!
There’s also one named after Lord Petersham’s sister: The Duchess. But not available in the USA yet.
Cool! Why isn’t it available in the US? It seems like there was another one on the site that was also only available in Australia…Aussie Chai (I just looked, LOL)
We started in Australia, where we have 21 blends. Many of them are based around teas readily available here. As we have expanded to the the US and the UK, we have found that some ingredients are impossible to get for very expensive. As an example, we had real trouble getting lemon myrtle, which you can buy at most supermarkets here. The USA is doing very well and currently has more than half the blends available. There are also two USA-only blends – Star Spangled Chai and a new one about to be announced. With regard to Aussie Ginger Chai, which is our biggest seller in Australia, it is entirely made from Australian-Grown tea which is quite expensive in the US. Nevertheless, following a few well-known US tea bloggers falling in love with it after we toured the USA handing out packets of it last month, I rather suspect there might be good news on that one in the coming months.
Yay! My swap with Cavocorax arrived today! Woo Hoo!
I spent most of the morning trying to reorganize my tea stash, since it’s the last day of the month. I spent most of the afternoon gardening, & if you’d like to see the latest photos, stop by my Facebook.

This is one of the teas I was longing to sample, LOL, & I thank Cavo for being awesome & sharing it with me, along with some other tasty looking treats! I like straight varieties of tea because each one has it’s own character, but I also enjoy a blend that combines the character of several teas, & this one really hits the spot, as far as I’m concerned.
This is also the first tea I’ve tried (I think) from the Devotea, & I’m looking forward to perusing their website (although right now I have no business perusing ANY teasites!). Luckily, Cavo was crazy-generous, so I’ll get to sample this a few more times.
Thanks Cavo!
