Spring 2023 harvest.

Brewed western style, lightly sweetened.

Wet tea leaves give off a sweet tangy red fruit and dark chocolate aroma, akin to a nice red wine.

Tea tastes of dried red fruits, cranberry, red apple, malt and cacao, with a pleasant hint of tannins. It’s very smooth, not too dark or bitter. There’re hints of cinnamon, pear and freshly baked wheat bread in the background, and a nice, slightly dry lingering finish.

I’ll have to update this review as I experiment with time, temperature and method. This tea was medium-light in body, though I’m sure with hotter water and more time it could be heavier and more tannic.

Overall a delicious tea. I’m very fond of teas with a red fruit flavor and this delivers that in spades, balanced with gentler malt, pear and bread notes.

This is a great daily driver tea. It’s not offensive at all, the aroma is crisp and clean as is the taste. Decently long aftertaste of nice roastyness. Bitterness increases with each steep.

The brick is very dense and tightly pressed.

I got this as a free gift from Yunnan Sourcing during a promotion, so it was a really great price!

TTB tea! I’ve ended up trying a bunch of pure chrysanthemum through various TTBs, and I enjoy them every time. This one isn’t quite as juicy and fruity as some, but it was quite refreshing cold. The cold resteep was tasty too!

(Spring 2023) Faintly grapey, green plummy notes to the leaves, but doesn’t quite come through as much on the steep. In fact aroma is pretty mute, surprisingly. Palate is creamy, lactic, round & pleasing, with some floral echoes. Tried at 180 but resteeped at 195 for 2.5 mins and much better.

Ok. This is the first puerh that I can really get into… Dumping rinse of first steep was critical, and this is not too fishy. The tangerine definitely tempers the earth/dirt notes with some fruit. There is a fascination to the aromas. Like a real mycelial, loamy smell of freshly turned, decomposing wood chips. And it has decent smooth texture and body. Maybe my gateway puerh?

(Spring 2023 harvest) Interesting, prominent roast character, almost a quality of tar or petrol. And more of a roast vegetal, radish than fruit or floral character. Body is smooth but misses some briskness and energy for me.

(Spring 2023 harvest) Very light green almost clear color. Very nutty, deep green aroma, like roast kale chips. Buttered asparagus palate. Fresh grass. Body is so smooth, not overly grassy, bitter or too vegetal. So good.

(Spring 2023 harvest) WOW. This has an insanely fragrant, floral wafting nose. Palate is fruity, and not bitter at all. Not the same textural intrigue as oolong, but this black tea totally blew me away.

Fish and hay and dirt is what I get. I am an oolong fanatic, just dipping my toe into puerh. But this is not my gateway.

(Spring 2023 Harvest) Green cast. Some subtle florals but more vegetal nose. More depth and savoriness than Ali Shan but maybe less overt florality. Second try- on a cold morning this is hitting the spot. Intoxicating nose.

(Spring 2023 harvest) Dark amber. Wow. Smells like a botanical garden. Nice roasted note, but such a floral bouquet. Brisk palate. Second steep loses florals, but still satisfying. One of my favorite yancha so far.

(Spring 2023 harvest) Very subtle. Nose has honeysuckle, hay, and the palate has melon, silky texture and a light astringency. This is objectively very good, but I find it, like most white tea, a bit subtle for my taste.

(Spring 2023 harvest) Woah- heady aromatics. White grape, guava, kiwi and gooseberry nose. Some husk cherry too. Palate is juicy and tart. Unbelievably unique. Though to an extent I don’t find myself reaching for it often.

(Spring 2023 harvest) Mid deep amber roast. Some honeysuckle, gentle satisfying toasty notes. Brisk. Second steep and even cleaner florals- echo of honeysuckle, hydrangea, rose, jasmine. Ultimately very nicely structured, mid-roast and still somewhat green oolong palate.

from mrmopar several years ago

Two rinses with long rests. Good tea. Very clear, flavorful, smooth, mellow, alkaline turning slightly acidic. Wet pile fish broth on the nose but not in taste. Getting some aged TCM peppery notes to go with the tobacco, dark wood, bread dough, wet autumn leaves and root beer; hints of camphor and eggplant. So compressed I’ll probably be nursing the pot for 3 days.

Neutralizing feeling in the body. Not particularly warming or cooling or caffeinated. Balanced.

Flavors: Alkaline, Autumn Leaf Pile, Bread Dough, Camphor, Clear, Dark Wood, Eggplant, Fish Broth, Geosmin, Root Beer, Smooth, Tobacco, Traditional Chinese Medicine, White Pepper

Boiling 5 g 3 OZ / 90 ML

This tea has a lot of character, I can recommend it to anyone looking for a complex Mengku pu-erh without the hefty price tag associated to Bing Dao or some of the other more famous villages.

The aroma is really engaging – herbaceous, sweet, and grassy when dry and more fruity during the session.

The rinse is not so representative of the whole experience. It tastes a bit like sencha, with sweet, sour and grassy notes. The first proper infusion is then herbaceous with a very sweet and nutty profile. The mouthfeel is thick and very soft and creamy.

Later on, a lot of florals develop, including mild bitterness. Sometimes, drinking the tea reminds me of a summer meadows, which is slightly dried out. The aftertaste is very sweet and aromatic. It bring further notes of bread and barley.

I agree with RichD: sweet, simple & smooth. A good daily drinker.

I think this tea is nice. The leaf is absolutely gorgeous. The tea is sweet, soft and round, but for me, like most bud-heavy black teas, lacks just a little bit of strength and boldness.
