Yunnan Tippy Pu-Ehr from The Tea Emporium

Dry leaves smell starchy, a bit grassy and a touch flowery. Rinsing the leaves brings out alcohol smell, I want to say cherry liqueur, it’s very subtle.

Even after a rather short steeping time, the liquor is very dark.

Just wanted to note that this tea grew a lot on me and in fact makes me want to try more sheng pu-erhs. It took me some time to come to terms with the world of difference between sheng and shou pue-erhs.

I love the bitterness it brings, it’s definitely very unique to me in terms of taste, it’s different from shou bitterness as well as oolong or blacks bitterness.

I steeped the tuo cha in the thermos today and was pleasantly surprised to find lots of citrus flavor on the second steep. It compares well with Darjeeling grapefruit flavor but beats it due to aforementioned particular bitterness. Maybe it was due to higher overall steeping temperature due to metal sides, but I never got that flavor from gaiwan or glass pot from this tea.

This is a creamy, mild tasting pu-erh. It doesn’t have much complexity in the taste but still comes out as a rich drink. One very interesting characteristic I noticed in this tea is that it’s unusually sweet, which was surprising but pleasant.

Definitely not one of those “right in your face” pu-erhs, but very nice nonetheless. Little too simple for my taste, but at the same time might be good for times when you feel like pu-erh but don’t necessarily want to over think it.

Quangzhou Milk Oolong from The Tea Emporium

This tea tastes exactly like it smells – very very creamy. I need to steep it well to get that delicious oolong bitterness and herb flavors out of it, otherwise it’s a little too overpoweringly milky for me.

The whole milk oolong fakeness controversy can be a bit daunting to a novice drinker like myself but if I am to believe that milk flavor stays strong throughout infusions in real milk oolong, this tea carries creaminess all the way through.

Delicious tea for the morning that I can see myself drinking any time of the day.

Steeped Tea from Tim Hortons

I found it rather cute that I could find Timmies tea on this site and in fact I am happy I did. I think this tea is good. It’s one of those price/value deals, and TH definitely delivers. I loved this tea ever since it appeared on their menu (and that would be quite a long time ago already, none of us are getting younger) and it is definitely superior to their bagged tea.

Yea it’s not anything fancy, but its an honest cuppa and I love it. In fact I would say that as much as Timmies’ coffee is good, so is this tea. Neither are an epitome of luxury but both are true simple man beverages and sometimes simple is just what you need.

P.S.: Steep Time and Water Temp fields actually made me wonder what values TH uses. Probably something scientific and backed up by years of research and marketing.

Young Pu-Erh from Herbal Infusions

It seems like the name of the tea dictates it’s taste quite a lot, it sure tastes young. It is a simple pu-erh. It’s bitterness is a little less refined than other pu-erhs I tried, it doesn’t have many complex notes and it didn’t have much of an aftertaste for me except for standard bitterness. All in all it’s an easy drinking tea and by far not a bad pu-erh, just a little too plain for my personal liking.

Aged Pu-erh Cake (10 years aged) from Tea Dynasty
95

An extremely smooth and earthy pu-erh almost creamy even. It has bitterness that is associated with pu-erhs but it’s never overpowering, just stays as a pleasant aftertaste. I can also detect some slight starchiness.

It has a very deep ruby brown color, yet extremely clear, with summer forest after rain smell. What I mean by that is sort of dusty fresh leaves on the ground just when the rain starts type of smell.

Resteeps well, in gaiwan it keeps it’s taste for 10+ infusions, in the pot I steep it for about 3 times getting flavor all the way through.

Organic Sheng Pu-Er Tuo Cha from Tao Tea Leaf

My first sheng pu-erh and I definitely was surprised when I first tried this one. Given I was steeping it as a usual pu-erh so it came out really bitter first time.

However, the little cake works perfectly for steeping in a pot and I appreciate the flavor now. It’s really astringent in a nice way and has a smoky flavor. It’s definitely not a classic pu-erh as I understand it so that just means I am more of a shou type of guy.

This tea tastes like some sort of herb elixir, something that would make you live forever or at the very least energize and boost you.

Da Hong Pao - Big Red Robe from Tea Dynasty

I have tried this tea several times before I finally got courage to review it. Without further ado I certainly must say I like this tea a whole lot.

Dry tea has a beautiful cigar color with a toasty smell. Brew tastes smoky, creamy, grassy and malty with notes of dark honey and buckwheat. It’s slightly sweet and bitter at the same time.

I’ve tried this tea in gaiwan with quick infusions and steeped in the pot, I just can’t seem to find a way to screw it, it comes out delicious no matter what. Steeping it a bit longer really makes it flavorful while in comparison later infusions taste fresh and grassy.

Wild Black Yunnan from DAVIDsTEA

A full-flavored, all-round balanced tea that went well for me in the morning and something I would happily drink in the afternoon. It could work well both as a sipper and as something you’d sit down to appreciate for flavor.

There is definitely a touch of honey in smelling the cup but I could also smell hoppy notes. It tastes pleasantly bitter which translates into smooth coating bitterness in aftertaste. Again I can’t help but compare it with good ale aftertaste and hoppy lager coated glass smell. I haven’t noticed any mentioned smokiness or sweetness but there is definitely “this is what black tea should taste like” aspect to it.

In gaiwan it resteepeed graciously for about 5 times, after that keeping the color, flavor starts to diminish which I found perfect for washing off the strong taste of this tea from previous infusions. Interestingly enough the pleasant aftertaste stays for a long time. Overall I did about 10 infusions and latter ones were interesting on it’s own. Overall lightness of those brings out notes very well.

I made note to self that first infusions need to be kept to a short time in order to avoid overpowering bitterness and to appreciate delicate balance of flavor of this tea.

Shui Xian Water Sprite from Tea Dynasty

Steeped this tea has slightly smokey characteristic oolong aroma, very gentle and pleasant. Liquor has a fresh grassy taste which immediately turns into a complex aftertaste, with familiar smokiness from smelling the tea. There is a slight bitterness that stays in the mouth. Cup smells like a very high quality brown sugar or honey based on different infusions. Color of the infusion is a very deep gold, I could get about 6-8 very flavorful infusions (gaiwan) from it with last ones being only grassier and fresher than earlier ones. Flavor stays very strong throughout all infusions. Definitely a tea I’d recommend.

Monsoon Blend #1 (Darjeeling) from Herbal Infusions

I was pondering for the longest time what this tea steeped smelled like to me and the best I came up with is lemony briar lollipop with a hint of black tea. Regardless of what it truly is it smells amazing, as a morning tea it just hits the spot.

It has very mild bitterness almost zesty. It’s a full flavored bold tea, yet not at all over-powering. There are very obvious grapefruit notes in it. Everything about this tea screams citrus to me, yet in a very subtle elegant way. It’s not so much of a taste that is citrusy, the tea rather wakes those tastes up in your mouth as you drink it.

Amazing tea, I will definitely check out more Darjeelings thanks to this one.

Organic Bolivian OP from Herbal Infusions

I would say it’s a good breakfast or all-day-round tea, it’s not overly complex, very light pleasant taste (I noticed a bit of a hay note to it) while drinking with a bit of astringent aftertaste, slightly bitter. I am not very knowledgeable of orange pekoes, it seems like they are supposed to be clean and easy drinking, I can definitely agree that this tea falls under this description. Not my cup of tea, pardon the pun, it lacks boldness and complexity to me. Verdict – something you’d drink as an all day tea, not to savor.

Tie Kwan Yin (organic) from DAVIDsTEA

As much as I love stronger teas this one is a keeper. It’s a treat to your senses in all forms – dry, steeped and sipped. Spring is all over this tea – dry it smells like very light honey, steeped you start to distinguish grassiness and fresh spring flowers and on tasting it all of these nuances come together in a delicious beverage. This tea has a fresh aftertaste for a long time making you crave more. You’ll be smelling your cup long after you’re done drinking it. It really makes me think of sunny flower fields and light summer breeze.

Three Wishes Tea from DAVIDsTEA

I definitely like black+green tea combinations and this one doesn’t disappoint. Very flowery yet strong brew. However, I am more into berries when it comes to flavored tea, so it wasn’t anything special for me personally ergo the lower score. Not something I’d stock up on or perhaps even buy again but no negative emotions either. Something like that.

The Earl's Garden from DAVIDsTEA
95

Not a big fan of Earl Grey tea, but I like my berry teas. This tea was truly a revelation for me, amazingly delicious. You can definitely taste strawberries in it. I also love that you can still taste a high quality black tea among the fruitiness. I can steep it till it’s pure black and it won’t spoil it, just makes it richer and bolder. Highly recommended if you want delicious black tea with some non-intrusive fruitiness.

Golden Pu-erh from DAVIDsTEA
90

I can’t help but try and defend this tea. It’s a very mildly flavored pu-ehr with amazing earthy aroma nothing short of mountain soil. On tasting it you can easily taste the young roots and meadow grass. Resteeps easily for at least 3 times keeping the flavor (getting milder and gaining more of a fresh hay taste). One point I must bring up is the “pu-erh effect”, this tea definitely delivers an amazing rush. The best I can describe it is feeling instantly refreshed, clear-minded and gathered. If you need a coffee in the morning to wake up and you are trying to find a tea that will match that I cannot recommend pu-erhs highly enough. No caffeine crash, no jitteriness, no thoughts all over the place – just pure clean energy. In fact try having a 3rd or later steep short time before bed, you just might learn something new about yourself or solve that problem that has been bugging you forever. This is my first pu-erh and I am forever in love with this sort of tea. I would definitely recommend this particular one to anyone who wants to jump into amazing world of Pu-erh.

Lapsang Souchong Star (organic) from DAVIDsTEA
90

Dry leaves have an overpowering smoky smell, but don’t get fooled by it, steeped tea has a very complex and pleasant aroma with distinct black tea notes. This tea might not be something you’d drink every day; it’s one of those that you know absolutely positively you want to have. Other reviews of campfire in a cup are spot on, I can only add that a warm night spent outside with a cup of this will de-stress the busiest bee. If you ask me beats the hassle of camping any time. I can’t help myself but savor every sip I take, it opens up with new notes each time. Re-steeps well and it doesn’t oversteep easily first time, go bold or go home.

Assam Banaspaty (organic) from DAVIDsTEA
80

It’s a very strong and flavorful tea. I like my tea full flavored so usually full recommended steeping time works for me but 6 minutes makes this tea very malty, almost bitter even though I rinse my tea all the time. Not something that necessarily works in the morning taste-wise, but wakes you up just right. Has a very distinct honey aftertaste. 3 steeps is what I get from this tea and second and third steeps are completely different from the first one, very light and delicious tea, almost sweet. As long as you can play with the first steep just to get it right to your taste it’s a highly recommended tea.

Profile

Bio

I was always a huge fan of teas but my tastes changed constantly. Lately I am on the path of discovering Chinese teas, but not limiting myself to that. I am, however, favoring straight teas at this point.

I love pu-erh, oolongs are always a treat, learning about greens is delicious, absolutely neutral towards rooibos or herbals and black is always a yes. Incidentally any combination of the above is ok in a blended tea, which I like to have time to time.

« The first cup kisses away my thirst,
and my loneliness is quelled by the second.
The third gives insight worthy of ancient scrolls,
and the fourth exiles my troubles.
My body becomes lighter with the fifth,
and the sixth sends word from immortals.
But the seventh—oh the seventh cup—
if I drink you, a wind will hurry my wings
toward the sacred island. »
