at a higher end grocery store and seeing there selection of loose leaf teas in big clear glass jars , open to the light
I see that all the time, too. The worst offender I have found is farmer’s markets where all the teas and herbs are in clear glass, out in the direct sunlight all summer long!
What’s worse is when you see a tea store storing their tea in clear glass jars and they are owned by a tea expert from China and get great ratings from the New York Times.
Ugh, that is painful. I know I’ve seen glass tea canisters that say they block UV light. Maybe they’re using something similar?
Glass blocks UVB but not UVA, so you can’t get a sunburn, but you can still get vitamins from the sun. My anatomy teacher told us that putting a jaundiced baby in the window was a weaker version of the light they use on them at the hospitals. UVA is what leads to wrinkles and skin cancer in high exposure though. Let’s just put the tea in the dark. (And wear full spectrum sunscreen.)
