Many gaiwans don’t have a spout anyway.

Gaiwan normally don’t have a spout, and it works just fine.

I think the trouble here comes from the fact that with your thingy the lid overlaps the cup, whereas with a gaiwan the cup/bowl would flare out with the lid sitting inside.
