Sheng and Shou TTB - Round 2 Finished

Here is the order for round 2. If you have schedule issues, PM me and we’ll work something out. Please immediately make sure you are following the people before and behind you.

The rules have changed a bit:
1. Please Don’t take more than 8 grams of each tea you are interested in (preference of 5 gm). This is different from past boxes, but we tend to use a lot more pu-erh than other types of tea for each pot, and many of the samples in the first round were relatively small. We can make a few exceptions; PM me if you feel the need.
2. Replace what you take in equal quantities by weight. Please try to add where you bought the tea. All Menghai Dayi may have been created equal, but storage matters. Don’t put more than about 1 oz of any tea in the box. You don’t need a lot of variety; we get that by having a lot of people on the list. Adding only one or 2 teas is OK as long as the weight is the same. Try to maintain the quality level as well.
3. Please post your additions plus any teas that you finished off to this topic, so others can track the contents.
4. No flavored teas (exceptions for traditional flavors such as rice rose).
5. Rather than keeping the box until you’ve tried everything, please take enough for one pot of each tea you want to try, then send the box on to the next person within a week. Rule 1 eliminates any need to taste before mailing.
6. Try to wrap the teas well. There’s been a lot of discussion about packing for TTBs elsewhere on Steepster, and the consensus is that thin baggies don’t seal well enough. Heavier gauge ziplock seems okay but the consensus is that foil is best. I have added a second layer of packaging to separate shou from sheng plus small packages for smokey sheng and flavored shou.
7. When you receive the box: PM the next person on the list to ensure they are ready. You can get their address in advance, but please don’t skip this step. Boxes have gone missing due to summer vacation, moves, etc.
8. Mail via 2nd-day mail and get a tracking number. In general, a single-rate box is NOT the best option. Please replace the box if it’s getting beaten up.
9. When you mail the box, PM me and the person you are sending it to with the tracking number. Also post to the thread the fact that the box has been mailed, along with a list of what you’ve added and what you tried. Mention if you took the last sample.
10. I hope you will write reviews, but it isn’t required, other than for the Whispering Pines teas. It is important to write reviews of the Whispering Pines teas, since Brenden has been kind enough to donate tea for the box.

I hope you all enjoy the box,
Dr Jim

Thanks so much! I think a couple people mentioned having some good foil baggies – wondering if someone could throw some empty ones in the box? Or point me to where I might get some for myself.

Dr Jim said

In the past I have bought these (and you will see some in the box is packed in these):
http://www.ebay.com/itm/50-3-5×5-Ziplock-Stand-Up-Pouches-Bags-SUP-AA-Clear-Silver-/310658911232?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4854b6cc00

Lately I’ve been using 4 mil ziplock bags. there is a significant difference between 4 mil and the (usual) 2 mil thickness. My recent additions were packed in 4 mil bags, which have smaller capacity but take up a lot less space than the foil bags. I think I bought my 3″ × 4″ bags at Amazon, but don’t see them now. Look for something that says it’s OK for food. Otherwise there may be odor/contamination issues.

I just noticed you are right in front of me. I can repackage your teas if you want, but frankly there is a lot of tea in baggies in teh box now. One thing about puerh is that exposure to air isn’t all that bad. One could argue that the warm humid air it will be seeing is good for the tea, though the cold, dry airplane air is very bad.

ebay or amazon – I found ebay tends to be cheaper even if you buy from a US based seller.

I see them in a slightly different size on Amazon, thought I’m not sure what to do with 500 of them. If anyone wants to throw some into the box that could be helpful.

How do you guys feel about stuff like Awa Bancha or other dark teas? It is in the dark tea family, but not per say Puerh. I am going thru my stash trying to get samples ready for the box today.

Dr Jim said

I like a bit of variety, but don’t want to go too far away from the theme of the box. I’m unfamiliar with Awa Bancha (and therefore think that a sample would be interesting) but wouldn’t want too many non-puerhs in the box.

I’ll be away for a few days in mid june – hopefully it won’t interfere with this, but if it seems likely I won’t be home when the box is scheduled to hit me I’ll be sure to let everyone know.

I suspect that it will be July before the box gets to you, but we’ll keep an eye on it.

I will be at the Midwest Tea Fest probably right after I get the box. Does anyone have any objections if I keep it until I get back? I am planning on getting some puerh in my travels and I would like to add them to the TTB. What do you all think?

I have no complaints, it also gives me more time to figure out what I’m going to add.

Midwest tea fest is June 6th for those who are wondering.

Aww! I am going to miss out on Midwest Tea Fest Teas! And here is to hoping… I am watching that tracking number bc we have such a speckled history of the USPS intercepting shipments between us! After last time I wouldn’t be surprised to see them ship it to Alaska then to NYC and Texas before it ending up in Colorado…

Dr Jim said

I’m fine with a delay as long as it isn’t much over a week. This box tends to move really fast due to the sample and ship rule.

Travel time can’t be worse than the first shipment of this box. Took 9 days to go from Massachusetts to New York (via New Hampshire and North Carolina!). Bad weather may have been a factor, but North Carolina???

Phi, I have not qualms over sending you some samples of teas I find there!

And I wish I could have screencapped that package I sent. It went back and forth the eastern US about four times!

Phi said

For everyone’s amusement, I have found and uploaded that. It wasn’t quite as crazy as I remember lol. But the story you don’t see from it was that it never got delivered, and Dodo resent it in a different package later.

Wow. That was almost a month. And I thought 9 days was bad.

Got the box yesterday! I still would like to add any good puerh hauls from the Midwest Tea Fest. Hope everyone’s cool with that?

I am already parceling out my samples and am adding some of my own stash. I think I am going to take a lot out but I want to add the same amount back in. Just btw!
