Tea Scales?

Greetings! I love my loose teas but I always just scoop the desired amount with a tea scoop & put it in my infuser. I’m hearing lots about tea scales & was wondering what the difference would be if I weighed the tea then put it in my infuser. And are there any specific kinds of scales that are best & amounts of tea that I need for a cup depending on the type of tea.

Thanks for any replies you may have & sorry if this question seems a bit stupid aha I am new to tea scales.
Peace, Love & Tea ♥ =]

I tried to use a food scale for tea but it wasn’t accurate enough. It couldn’t measure grams unless the amount on the scale was over 15 g, haha. But I’ve since gotten an older scale off of Craigslist that works a lot better, though it needs to be recalibrated every few months.

I generally go with 2 grams per 8 ounces, unless I’m measuring oolong. Then I’ll do something like 3.5 grams per 6 ounces with very short steeps.

I too have an electric pocket scale meant for jewelry, bought on Amazon for ~$15. I love it, use it often, especially for white & green teas – anything big and hard to measure with a teaspoon. I use about 3 grams leaf for 8oz water for most teas, oolongs and whites sometimes stronger.

It’s so nice to see these archived posts. I searched for scale information and here it is. I purchased one for $10 from Amazon today. I was leery because of the price, but it has 4 out of 5 stars from almost 200 reviewers, so we’ll see…

I love mine by Polder-it is very accurate. Don’t know what I ever did without it!

I love the one Upton has. I hope to get it for Christmas. It is especially for tea, not just a general kitchen scale, and has a cup weight mode. I think it is reasonably priced, too.

Ooh, I’ve been eyeing that scale for a while. Just wish it wasn’t quite so pricey. Good to know you like it :)

if you find one with a tare option you can zero out your infuser and add the tea to it without having to transfer it again.

I believe the one from Upton may have that, but that is a great point and I will double check before asking for it!
