Favorite Pu'erh with natural Chocolate flavor?

What’s your favorite unflavored pu’erh that has a chocolate flavor as opposed to bittersweet or unsweetened cocoa?

Is there a pu’erh version of an excellent Zhenghe Gongfu / Jin Ping Gong Fu?

IMHO I find this one to be similar to Special Dark – a little malty a little chocolaty.
I know others have described this as being chocolaty, but I didn’t find it that way….

Thanks for the suggestion! Does the first linked pu’erh have more of an unsweetened cocoa or a chocolate flavor profile?

Dexter said

I wouldn’t say bittersweet and wouldn’t say unsweetened cocoa, but I’m not sure milk chocolate is the right word either. This is what I wrote as a tasting note:
This is a perfect hybrid between a fuzzy golden bud Yunnan black tea (malty, sweet, chocolatey, sweet potato) and a really nice smooth ripe pu’erh (earthy and subterranean). There is nothing nasty in this tea. It’s flavorful without being in your face. I love it. Great way to step outside my comfort zone into the wonderful world of shou pu’erh.
When you said Zhenghe – I thought of this. It’s a cross between a really nice black and a smooth pu’erh. I LOVE Tao Tea Leaf Jin Ping Village GongFu and I LOVE this pu’erh. I just thought if you liked that black you would like this pu’erh…

Sounds awesome! Thanks!

I hope you like it :)

I know several ppl who like the 7599 – that’s why I mentioned it, but for me the Yellow Dragon was more to my tastes…

The Yello Dragon Golden Needle from Streetshop is an excellent puerh.

Thanks! Pesticide-free or EUROFINS compliant?

Thanks for the additional information!

Dexter, 2014 Top Yunnan Yellow Dragon: Given my preferences, would you recommend one 100g cake to start, or would I be safe to opt for the quantity discount for 5 cakes?

boychik said

Order only one. I had a sample. while it was nice it didnt blew my mind. everybody have diff tastes. you wont save much by ordering 5 and not liking them much

Dexter said

LOL I am the wrong person to ask. I don’t buy in quantity. I LOVE this cake and have bought ONE cake on three separate occasions.
Buying 5 cakes of an untried tea goes against everything I believe in. No matter how good the recommendations are… we all taste/like different things. I can’t in good conscience tell you to buy 500g of it. (IMHO I think you are going to like it, but it might be a hint too earthy for you… Majority of the people that I sent samples too really liked it)
I can mail you a sample if you would like to try it first. If you would like me to do that just PM me your address and I can send you enough to try….

How does the 2014 Top Yunnan Yellow Dragon compare to the 2014 year Supreme Yunnan MengHai LangHe 7599?

Per White2Tea: “The 2000 Chocolate Mini Shu Puer bricks are so named for their small shape, rather than their flavor, which is more of a fruity sweetness.”
How does it taste to you?

boychik said

it doesnt taste chocolaty to me. Im a chocoholic. i eat dark chocolate only 70% and up to 90%.

I find this one tastes like fruity old library books.

I’m with boychik all the way on this one! (Except I don’t see a reason to stop at 90 :þ)

It’s a really good shou though, just not chocolate-like at all to me.

boychik said

its not that easy to find above 90 :0 @Veck. the only thing i need in life is chocolate and pu, pu and chocolate ;D

I believe that Whispering Pines 2012 Huron Gold Needle is often thought of as having a certain amount of chocolate flavor, but not in the milk chocolate sense, more of bittersweet cocoa.

looseTman said

Thanks for the suggestion. Bittersweet cocoa isn’t my cup of tea.

I agree on the Huron, also I think the most chocolatey pu is Special Dark by Mandala

AllanK said

Special Dark fits the bill.

mrmopar said

+1 on Special Dark.

looseTman said

“most chocolatey pu is Special Dark by Mandala” – Agreed.

I purchased a LB of Special Dark during Mandala’s 50% off sale based on excellent recommendations from TheTeaFairy and mrmopar. We’ve truly enjoyed it and there’s only about 60g left! So, I thought I’d ask if there are other possibilities we should consider. To date, Special Dark is the only tea that my wife enjoys as much as her beloved Rishi Earl Grey organic!

We brew it western-style in a tempered tea mug with a Finum brew basket and TheTeaFairy’s suggested parameters: 5g / 10 oz. / 212 / 10 sec. rinse / 5 & 10 min. In my experience, it tastes like a high percentage cacao bean content dark chocolate bar. The higher the cacao bean content, the less sweet it is. If we brewed it Gong Fu style, would that yield a different flavor profile?

In contrast, 10 months ago I reviewed Jin Ping Gong Fu by Tao Tea Leaf: http://steepster.com/looseTman/posts/257693. This is the most chocolaty unflavored black tea I’ve ever tasted. There was no hint of bittersweet or unsweetened chocolate or cocoa. Just “incredibly deep rich malty milk chocolate!” This is why I started this thread.

Ok, i know you asked for chocolaty pu. what i want to suggest you is a little different.
http://www.puerhshop.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=1_148&products_id=1400

This tea is more like cherry covered chocolate. very creamy and clean. what this tea doesnt have:
-dirt or earth
-mushrooms

its like creamy pudding. i finished the brick and im going to get 1 or 2 of this comfort shou.

looseTman said

Thanks again boychik! I love mushrooms in food, but not in my tea.

puerhshop shipping to Canada is crazy expensive. The shipping on that cake is almost 28.00. :(( This would be why I haven’t ordered from them. :((

boychik said

if you want i can pick it for you Dex. Im planning to placed an order soon before they run out (only 11 left)

Dexter said

:)) I would LOVE to negotiate something like that boychik. I don’t think it would cost you 28.00 to ship a cake to me…. We need talk…. I might need to spend some time shopping their site…

boychik said

my guess it would be under $10 Dexter. let me know

Dexter said

I’ll PM you tonight once I’m home from work…
I’m looking at this one too….

http://yunnansourcing.com/en/2012/3065-2012-menghai-lao-cha-tou-brick-ripe-pu-erh-tea.html This one is the most chocolate tasting shou I’ve found!

looseTman said

With 1087 Tasting Notes to your credit, that’s quite a recommendation!

Whoa, I have steepster cred! :-o

I would guess that less than one hundred of those tasting notes are puerh. I would also like to vote for Special dark from Mandala. That one to me is dark cocoa powder and the Lao Cha Tou is milk chocolate drool

looseTman said

I have not. Heard good things about that seller though!

What’s not to like about pu’erh with natural Chocolate flavor?
It’s un-American to not love Chocolate :-))

The Dayi laochatou, and special dark already mentioned get another recomendation from me.

I’d like to also add Crimson Lotus’ Bulang Gushu Shou to the list though, and I must say I’m surprised it wasn’t on here yet! Love this tea!

Edit; If brewed strongly I find Dayi V93 can get a dark chocolate-like bitterness to it.

You’re very welcome! Anything to spread the love of Pu’erh with natural Chocolate flavor.

I just tried one: Teasenz Mini Pu-erh Bar is pretty chocolatey, but that might be because I used a whole square for a mug and used so many leaves. I probably could have went with half a square but then it wouldn’t have been as chocolatey!
