Anyone new to puerh and unsure: buy one 2015 Poundcake from white2tea for $49, and an order of 2014 Lao Cha Tuo for $5.50. Total $54.50 plus $14 for shipping, $68 or thereabouts. You’ll get a sample in the box of something else.

Or the Bulang Maocha, really good as well.

i would love to get a cake coz it is more economical in the long run and poundcake + lao cha tuo do seem good enough to get even without sampling but im torn between that and getting as many samples as i can XD hopefully i can decide before the sale is over.

mrmopar, what’s the diff between a mao cha and a cake of the same kind of tea? mandala’s wild monk 2014 has both kinds… oh the bulang is out of stock now, lol

Mao cha is loose tea as opposed to pressed into a cake or other shape. Sometimes the loose can age more quickly because more air can circulate throughout the tea.

I’d still recommend the Poundcake over a Bulang since the Poundcake is sweeter and more forgiving in not going bitter if a person is new to steeping puerh. It is a tea no one can regret buying because you can drink it anytime as opposed to waiting 15 years to become drinkable. Same with the Lao Cha Tou.

Cwyn got it right. Mao Cha is loose stored and ages faster.

so…that’s supposed to be good right?

another question: are all laochatous more or less the same or are there by any chance some bad ones too?

mrmopar said

Laocha means ‘old tea head’ it is a byproduct of the fermentation process. It is like a tea clump that they cant steam apart to press into a cake. They take a long time to fully develop when brewing but they yield many steeps. I generally don’t get them unless they are from a reputable vendor or a big factory. Too much to chance on the sanitation of some of the small factories. I use the same rule for any Shou tea because of this.

I can’t think of any non bagged tea that you can promise will be the same from one place to another, or one harvest to another. Tea is variable, this is part of the beauty. There should be good, bad, and in-between of everything. And of course what’s good to me may be bad to you.

any updates on the w2t sampler set?

I think you should just email TwoDog if you want one. Even if you can’t buy it just yet, I’m sure he’d reserve one for a period of time.
