a very subjective puerh survey

Surveying Steepsterites who have had at least 20 straight puerhs per category.

Pls nominate each sheng, aged sheng, and shou that you would say is among your top 10 (regardless of price for now, we can do another one on different price points later on). 1 nomination per post. And then voters can comment if they vote for that specific tea to be in the top 10.

Feel free to share why you like it, price point, etc.

After a week, I will tally scores. Voting can continue for fun as it is just an informal survey. Thank you for participating!

Also feel free to make suggestions on the survey like:

-would it be better to raise the minimum # of teas tasted coz 10 out 20 is not a wide enough range of experience?

-should we make a separate topic per category? i think i like this. i’ll do this and just put links here.

-should participants nominate less teas to make it easier like say 5 then just vote for 10. or maybe eliminate the min/max # of nominations altogether?

- should we make the nominating and voting time longer than a week? we can always retally whenever many votes are added later on but if majority think a week is too short to choose we will adjust it.

- maybe we can also have the official participants state how many they have tried in each category or at least estimate. will list official participants on the topic just to distinguish them from the nonparticipant who wants to comment.

- tea lovers who have tried 20 puerhs in a category and have not liked any are also welcome to say so…just so we have a pulse on the state of the puerh here :)

- any other suggestions?

Could this not have been done in one post?

it couldve but if ever it did push through we’d have teas nominated and everyone commenting on each and categories all mixed up and i imagined it would be super messy and hard to tally

Or like use a survey website, like google forms or survey monkey. Steepster’s platform is meh.

Faster, just check out http://steepster.com/teas?pu-erh=on for the top rated pu’er on Steepster.

In the end, pu’er tastes are vastly different. There’s people who love that bitter face punch, others just chase the tea drunk and others like a more friendly taste.

ah, just thought to work with what’s here – its not really a just for me kinda survey. you do have a point in the differing tastes tho Ms Owl!

other people still working to develop a taste for puerh has me wondering how much i should order from the w2t sale coz i don’t want to buy lots of samples especially the more expensive ones only to find that i don’t like any of them.

anyways, if there are no willing participants, there is no survey ;)

the thing about the ratings is that some dont give ratings and have only tasting notes so i thought this would be a more accurate measure of the people’s preferences on specific puerhs but it’s fine. it was just an idea.

I suggest creating a survey using sites like surveymonkey or Google Docs and just post the link. I’m sure you can get a small sample of people to take it. To get quantitative data, you would need to do item analysis testing for reliability and validity on survey questions as well as large sample numbers of people. But for a quick shot, qualitative snapshot, this you can easily get.

Can I ask what’s the goal of this survey? I don’t understand. We all have diff taste buds. Do you have trouble on deciding which samples to get?

She mentioned in another thread that she doesn’t want a bunch of samples due to risk of not liking them. I am guessing she’s trying to get a few sure-fire recommendations to get a cake but that’s only a theory.

If I’m right though, Yssah, you really need to consider samples. Buying a cake you hate is much worse than a sample you hate. And tastes change, sometimes very quickly.

I think many people wrote bunch of reviews on shou/sheng. so its reading time now. I dont feel like doing survey would benefit anyone. Just my 2c.

And agree on samples only. What tastes incredible for me would be meh for someone else. So i truly believe its not economical to buy a whole cake.

Unless we’re talking Poundcake. :P I can’t see how that tea can go wrong for someone new to Puerh.

Samples are the way to start, but I would also recommend getting a cake or two fairly soon.

Drinking your way through 357gr of a single tea provides insight that just sampling won’t give, and may help get more out of the samples in the long run.

At least, that’s just how I see it.

What I don’t get is even if one doesn’t like it it’s not end of the world. Many new tea people don’t want to risk investing in a cake or a very expensive sample, so if you got decent stuff up for trade I’m sure many would be happy to have it.

I don’t think I would like poundcake – based on the reviews. That’s why people need to try enough for themselves to learn what notes they do/don’t like then judge the reviews based on their own preferences. IMHO :)

The TC is a tea seller, maybe she is looking for data to use in a business setting.

ummm basically coz not everyone uses numerical ratings (i dont) so it would be a more concrete measure of the general preferences. it is more for myself. but yea, i am getting samples and also considering a cake soon as i find one or two that i like :D

your posts are helping a lot!

idk if i will be conducting a more structured survey but it does sound fun…maybe after i have a better handle of stuff :)
