Awkward tea moments

Note: “Her” is a girl in one of my 400 level business classes who noticed the substance in my clear travel bottle.

Her: Is that green tea?
Me: Yes
Her: I should drink more green tea. That stuff is supposed to be healthy for you, right?
Me: Yes, pretty much… but that is not the main reason why I drink it.
Her: Why else would you drink it?
Me: Uh, for the taste.
Her: Oh, yeah, I totally like Arizona’s green tea and Lipton’s Citrus green tea.
Me: I try to stay away from the flavored stuff. Green tea has a great flavor all its own. I don’t understand why people feel like they need to cover up the natural flavor of tea with sugar and other flav-
Her: Oh Em Gee, did you watch LOST last night?
Me: /face palm/

Never be embarrassed about something you are interested in and have passion for. If tea is one of those things, let it be so. There’s not enough interest and passion in this world and if tea is that for you, don’t change your habits for the benefit of others. Tea is awesome.

I work as a barista, and we serve loose leaf tea. Today, a customer approached the counter and asked if we had any “normal” teas. I wasn’t exactly sure what she meant by “normal,” so I pointed to the menu of our loose leaf teas. She replied with, “Oh, I really don’t like loose leaf teas.”

…I really didn’t have anything to say to that. I don’t understand why anyone wouldn’t like loose leaf tea. I get that it’s inconvenient to have on the go and stuff, but if someone’s serving it to you?? It made me sad. sigh

Like in your profession, I am constantly encountering people with varying levels of understanding and sophistication when it comes to food and drink. I would assume (just from experience) that by “normal” she was referring to a bottled and highly sugared variety of tea.

A friend posted “Most people are like tea bags. Their true flavor comes out when they get in hot water.” And I said “Have you drank tea from a bag lately? Your average tea bag (I was talking about cheap dust) doesn’t have much flavor.” Her reply was “No, but tea comes from tea bags.”

Embarrassing tea moment: 2 summers ago, I acquired a tea that was composed of 50% blood orange black tea and 50% orange black tea. While still in my tea consuming youth, as well as trying to impress my brother who wanted to get into tea, I added too much tea,and steeped it for 5 minutes. After the 5 minutes, we strained the tea, and thought it smelled great. We added some milk to the tea, and the acid from the oranges curdled the tea! The tea also tasted so bad, and so tannic and sour that I couldn’t swallow it and spit it out immediately. Embarrassing!

Cofftea said

Haha that’s funny! I’ve heard people say citrus curdles dairy- but I add matcha to an equal mix of milk and OJ all the time.

thats interesting! maybe it depends on the amount of citric acid in the OJ?

Cofftea said

Maybe… I’ve also added milk or creamer to MarketSpice chai before w/ no ill effect.

Don’t know if I’d say I was embarrassed but I sure had a great deal of explaining to do while carting around a couple of teenagers. When a car suddenly pulled out in front of us, I slammed on the brakes propelling my purse into the back seat spilling everything. Imagine my nephews’ face when a baggie of chocolate mint tea fell into his lap. With all the condescending tone of a parent he quipped “And just what do we have here young lady?” which was followed by a roar of laughter.

Cofftea said

lol I guess people know me well enough to not be surprised by that.

TeaParT said

They knew me well enough also. That is why he used the parental tone with me. My own kid was laughing so hard to see me put in the hot seat.

Cofftea said

Oh ok. Guess I’m just missing the point then lol. Nothin new:)

It’s a reference to a certain substance that may cease to be illegal in California, come November.

Cofftea said

That’s what I was thinking, but I guess I thought chocolate mint tea wouldn’t tea wouldn’t be mistaken for that. Unlike my story below lol.

Just remembered this one… came back from Seattle in Nov. and my friend Karen gave me dried lemon grass, spearmint, and orange mint from her garden. Anyone that would smell it would know it wasn’t something illegal, but I was still paranoid til my carry on got thru security.

I was in a tea room a while back with two friends of mine. One friend knows I am tea freak the other I was meeting for the first time. The tea was served and I stated that I didn’t think they let it seep long enough or the temperature of the water was off. (truly, the tea was weak) and the person that I didn’t know asked, “who cares what the exact temperature of the water is” I was like, “I do, I am a bit of a tea geek” she said, “you are?” and said, “I am so much a geek I used a tea thermometer at home” and I swear half the tables in the establishment stopped and looked at me, and stared. The people at the table with me was in a dead stare. It was so embarrassing! The only thing I could think of to say was, “I really do”

TeaParT said

That is a great story. Ezzirah, you would have felt right at home at the NY meetup surrounded with other tea geeks. AmazonV had everyone in envy when she pulled out her keyring touchless thermometer and started reading temps to us. We even had to pass it around the table in grade school “show-n-tell” style. Yeh AmazonV!

Cofftea said

You should not be embarassed- they should. I could see that happening- but not a tea room! Strange.

Ezzirah said

A keyring touchless thermometer? I need a link to that! Where can I get it?

Do tell please!

I know, you would think in a tea room that would be expected. But not this one. It was so weird!

It was a Steepster Select about mid-June but I don’t remember any of the details.

I’m normally very careful not to cross post, but this is too good. A lady on Teavana’s FB page just posted: “I’m a fan, yes. But, I have to say it was a bit disheartening to hear the Manager say: “Great! Thank God we hit our daily quota- whew!””
