Mystery Tea Box Subscription - Yay or Nay?

Simple Loose Leaf ( http://www.simplelooseleaf.com ) provide a monthly mystery tea box with 4-6 blends.

I guess the main selling point is that you don’t know what you’re getting and that you’ll end up trying new blends. But, is this something that would interest you or do you prefer to just buy whatever you want? Do you any of you have a subscription with Simple Loose Leaf?

I do. I have done over a year of reviews of each month of their boxes. Even through all their changes to the program. First off, right now you get 1 or 2 blends, and the rest is unflavored out of 4 to 5 teas. http://oolongowl.com/category/tea-reviews/simple-loose-leaf/

Cons are I missed their old program of letting you choose what is in your box. Their store to buy more tea at a discount barely changes and hasn’t had anything good in it yet. So if you want more of a tea you tried you can’t get anymore of it.

If you are new to tea, it’s a well balanced subscription of blends and unflavored teas to get your feet wet.

If you want blends and try new sellers, Amoda’s box is a better option.

Thanks Oolong Owl. Do you find the mystery aspect exciting?

For Simple Loose leaf no, but thats more of a personal thing. They curate quite a big range of teas and I know what I like and don’t like at this point in my tea drinking. I think blends and herbals is where the trouble is for me as I don’t like many of them. But yeah, this one is best if you want to try a lot of different teas before you know what you like.

Other tea subscriptions yes – but those seem to have a more narrow focus (like straight pu’er/oolong) and less things I could dislike.

Oolong Owl, what’s you’re thoughts on pricing and which subscription packages do you feel are the best and why?

That’s a huge question and there’s a lot of tea subs out there. It really depends where you live (for shipping), how much tea you want (monthly stock vs. trying samples), how seasoned of a tea drinker you are, and what kind of teas you want. Many tea sellers have their own monthly sub too if you have a favorite tea seller.

Pricing always falls short on subscriptions considering shipping and getting teas you don’t want, so you are rarely going to get a deal. If you know what you want it’s best to just directly order.

This is slightly off topic, but what are you’re thoughts on a tea subscription service for tea nerds – a little like Nerdblock that included more than just tea? (i.e. cool mugs, fun tea pots, tea cosy etc) Every item completely random month to month and a mystery.
