Cleaning Mold From Yixing

I had that happen to me recently, I was a dork and put the lid back on when it was still wet after tea so I had a nice coating of fuzz on the inside. I did a boil and rinsed it out with boiling water a few times and then scrubbed it out with a scrubby. So far no death and I didn’t notice any rank taste altering to the pot.

Sorry to read this… I made the same mistake last year and found that my pot was fine after a little cleaning. I filled it with several rounds of boiling water to loosen things up and then gave it a good scrub inside with the rough side of a new sponge. After that, I boiled it for 30mins and let it dry overnight before repeating the next day for good measure. Everything (taste, smell, etc) was back to normal after a good overnight soak in some strongly brewed tea. Good luck!

I had this happen once and boiling didn’t work (i guess spores don’t all die at 212), so I ended up drying it out completely and then baking it at 400ºF for 30 minutes. Boiling works most of the time from what I’ve heard though! :-)

Baking is a pretty good idea! If a smell remains, try alcohol, bleach, and finally, acetone. I used acetone to remove paint/ink on the outside of a 60s Yixing last week. Worked a treat and no residual odor after.
