Gluten and Tea

I also have a gluten sensitivity and never thought much that it could be connected to tea, but this makes me think. I would imagine if the tea doesnt have additives to it it is okay…which is why I usually just drink pure oolong or pu-erh teas. Anyone have any problems with these?

I think pure oolong and puerh have no added gluten.

Any pure tea I think is Gluten Free just nobody labels it that for the most part. Simpson and Vail has a statement on their website saying all their teas are gluten free. However, I am pretty sure they don’t test for gluten in their tea. They just make sure all their ingredients come from gluten free facilities. 52Teas has stated that all their current line up is gluten free. So far Fuzhuan is the only thing I know about close to a pure tea with gluten. Scott at Yunnan Sourcing was talking about the possibility of testing his Fuzhuan for gluten because there is the possibility that Fuzhuan is also gluten free if it was produced with rice flour. Problem is that gluten problems are unknown in China. The factories that produce the tea won’t give Scott a straight answer about how the tea was produced. He did try to find out when I asked him.

That makes a lot of sense, thank you guys. I guess my stomach is just sensitive, especially to Oolongs and some green teas…its not really characteristic of gluten sometimes, its more of a stomach lining pain or it feels like my stomach is nauseous for a few hours. Ive heard this described as a reaction maybe to the pesticides which are often high in both teas…not sure
