Caring for crackle glaze teaware

Ive got some lovely plain gaiwans:

and they are the crackle pattern type which craze with use.

Is there anything I should know about caring for these? Can I use detergent or does it get in the crazing?

I collect antique flow blue ware, much of which has crazing. Avoid using any bleach on your tea ware but then you probably would not anyway. Mild detergent and a non-abrasive cleaning pad or sponge will serve you in good stead. If you have a stubborn stain or spot, water and baking soda or toothpaste are abrasive enough to eradicate it.

If you clean it out right after use you should be able to clean with hot water. Some glazes can accept soap. Some are only partial glazes and are best without soap.

Just rinse it with water and wipe with a clean towel.

Same here. After a bit I use a soapy sponge to really wash my germs XD

Your best bet is to not put anything on them you wouldn’t mind drinking later. And not to use these with sugar or milk or for cold brewing…not that you would be doing this with your gaiwan anyway.

Yes it is best to use sugar and milk only with glass teaware or other teaware with a dishwasher safe glaze. That way you can clean with soap.
